What are the types of construction dump trucks Many of our projects will require construction dump trucks to finish the job. By elevating the rear cargo using hydraulic components and letting it fall to the ground, dump trucks move aggregates from one place to another.
These vehicles come in a variety of sizes and configurations, so we’ve put together a list of the most common dump truck accessories used in the building industry. Consider any weight limitations or frost bans imposed by the federal or state governments before selecting a dump truck.

Roadless Dump Trucks Off-road trucks, commonly referred to as articulated trucks, are massive vehicles used mostly in mining operations or in circumstances where they are transporting huge amounts of material. They shouldn’t be used on roads or in populated areas because of their big size and heavy weight. Instead, they should be utilized in off-road situations (rough terrain). They are among the best when it comes to long-distance transportation. They are able to move 60 tons of goods. On articulated dump trucks, there is a hinge located between the cab and the bed box.
trucks used for transfer The moveable cargo container helps you tell transfer dump trucks apart since they each have a distinct type of trailer. This configuration keeps mobility while increasing the load capacity.
The tractor of the truck is powered by an electric motor, and it rolls on wheels into the trailer frame of the leading dump truck. You may expand the capacity of the leading truck by adding more cargo containers by using a transfer dump truck variation. However, weight restrictions prevent this setup from being used in all states.
Side-loading trucks The most effective dump trucks for unloading are side dump trucks. They have one of these trucks’ greatest load capacity, and they have the distinctive ability to tilt to the side and dump the cargo to the ground.
Their length restricts their movement, but they offer stability against tumbling over. However, due to this characteristic, you can’t always utilize this vehicle. Because of this, these vehicles work best when given a lot of freedom to maneuver. Additionally, side dump vehicles will be able to carry less weight than conventional dump trucks.
Standard Dump Truck
The standard dump truck is the most often used type of dump truck in the construction industry. The dump chassis is raised by a hydraulic ram that is positioned between the cab and the truck body. There is one front axle and one or more rear axles. The two layouts of dump trucks that are used most frequently are six- and ten-wheelers. Although they are quite maneuverable, you cannot use them on soft terrain.
Dump Trucks from Different Businesses There are more dump truck configurations, however they are less common than the ones mentioned above. Here are a few more varieties of dump trucks:
This vehicle resembles a transfer dump truck quite a bit, except it features a hydraulic ram. It is capable of self-dumping.
Super Dump Truck
A unique dump truck that is capable of carrying massive loads. Paving concrete and asphalt is simple with the Superdump truck.
Trucks of this type are side dump trucks with hydraulic hoists for the two-axle trailers, or semi-trailer end dump trucks.
Semi-trailer bottom dump truck: This vehicle resembles a semi-trailer end dump truck but with a center-bottom clamshell dump gate. The main benefit of a semi-bottom dump truck is its ability to place material in constrained spaces and areas.
In a double or triple trailer bottom dump truck, a two-axle tractor drives a single-axle semi-trailer together with one or two full trailers. The most notable drawback is the challenge of going backward.
Based on laws and restrictions, these choices and those previously mentioned will vary from one nation to the next. While there are many other types of dump trucks available, experienced drivers and construction workers choose these four the most.

2023.05.29 17:44 autotldr Malaysia detains Chinese vessel for looting WWII shipwrecks

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 35%. (I'm a bot)
Malaysia's coast guard said Monday it has detained a Chinese vessel believed to have been involved in plundering World War II shipwrecks.
The Maritime Enforcement Agency said in a statement that the bulk carrier, registered in Fuzhou, China, and its 32 crew members were detained Sunday for anchoring in waters off the eastern coast of Malaysia's southern Johor state without a permit.
The coast guard also said they found on the ship cannon shells that are believed to be from sunken British World War II battleships, the Prince of Wales and the Repulse.
Japanese bombers sank the two ships in 1941 off the east coast of Malaysia in the South China Sea.
The New Straits Times, a local newspaper, reported that local fishermen had seen the Chinese salvage vessel, identified as Chuan Hong 68, at the location of the shipwrecks since last month.
In an article published last Tuesday, the English daily said after dredging up the remains of the battleships, the Chinese vessel unloaded the haul at a private jetty in Johor with a scrapyard that can store and melt down metals.

2023.05.29 17:40 bhargavikashyap Traveling with my dog to India from US for short term

Hello hello! Seeking advice and experience from folks who’ve traveled to India with their dog(s) for short term. I will likely be staying over a month and unfortunately leaving him behind is not an a option behind. I’m considering either Turkish airline or Lufthansa. Has anyone traveled with them, what has been your experience? How stringent are they with weight/carrier limits?
My dog is about 19 lbs and I’m hoping to take him in-cabin. I’m not comfortable with him in cargo for such a long journey. His weight is only 1 lb over the limit of both the airlines, with his carrier it goes over by 4 lbs. I have used the large Sherpa Carrier for domestic travel and he has done well in those flights.
Appreciate any advice/feedback! Thank you!

2023.05.29 17:32 immacamel Defending the Draft: 2023 Green Bay Packers

A new era is under way in Green Bay, and there's a lot to cover about this offseason. First, let's set the stage.
Key Signings:
KR Keisean Nixon- the return dynamo who renewed my will to live after watching Amari Rodgers play football. Signed again on a 1 year deal worth up to $4m. And he figures to have a larger role on defense this season. This was one of the biggest wishes for packer fans this offseason, as it finally shows a dedication to building the ST unit.
S Rudy Ford- he had himself a nice 2022 and got re-signed for his efforts. It's a one year deal, and he will compete for the starting safety spot as of now.
CB Corey Ballentine- a reserve CB who I will always have a soft spot for due to his tragic draft night story. Ballentine has been re-signed and will compete for snaps in an unsettled secondary.
S Dallin Leavitt- a Rich Bisaccia re-signing. Leavitt was a quiet killer last season as a special teams ace, and he returns in that role this season.
OT Yosh Nijman- a developmental prospect that has blossomed into an serviceable swing tackle, I thought Nijman would get more on the open market than his RFA tender price. He will be back with the Pack in a LT2 and RT2 role for 2023.
Key Departures:
DT Dean Lowry- Lowry gave the Pack his best and we appreciate him, but his ceiling was evident and achieved. Devonte Wyatt was drafted as a high upside replacement. Lowry signed with the Vikings on a 2 year deal.
WR Allen Lazard- Aaron Rodgers's latest security blanket, Lazard is rejoining Rodgers on a 4y, 44m deal with the New York Jets. A quiet, consistent performer for the Packers throughout his tenure, Lazard will continue to be a sure-handed possession receiver in New York, transforming the slot position previously occupied by Elijah Moore into more of a big slot. He will also continue to mug people in the run game.
TE Robert Tonyan- Bobby Tonyan heads south to Chicago to be TE2 behind Cole Kmet. Packer fans love Tonyan for bringing pride back to the position in GB, and I honestly feel bad for him. He likely missed on his chance for a big pay day after tearing his ACL in 2021 and having a down year coming back. Now he's pushing 30, but he still provides excellent hands for the position and a great work ethic. Godspeed, buddy.
DL Jarran Reed- the big man returns to Seattle this season on a 2 year deal. Reed was just about what we expected in Green Bay- not great, not bad. He was a placeholder in a spot that Wyatt hopefully can take over.
Free Agents yet to be signed:
WR Randall Cobb, S Adrian Amos, TE Marcedes Lewis, K Mason Crosby
All members of the old guard. Cobb recently had surgery, and is a contender to rejoin Rodgers in NY. Amos had a down year, but could still have some left in the tank. I'm guessing he has an offer from GB and is weighing his options. Lewis also could be weighing his options between retirement, the Jets, or sailing into the sunset where it all began for him in Jacksonville. Mason Crosbys wife seemed to confirm on social media recently that the Packers have little interest in re-signing their all time leading scorer. Crosby made some clutch kicks for us over the years, and if this is the end, the Silver Fox will never have to buy a beer in Titletown again.
2022 season review: Record: 8-9 Oh man. 2022 was the year it all came crashing down. Green Bay tried to keep its veteran core together for a few years, appeasing Rodgers and navigating the salary cap reasonably well. But they never achieved that brass ring. Minus Davante Adams and working with a broken thumb, Rodgers struggled the most he has since his inaugural season as a starter. It's now time to address Rodgers in this post; I could write an entire entry solely on Rodgers and this past season, but I'll leave it at this: Aaron is my favorite football player of all time. He led the Packers to their greatest stretch of sustained excellence since Vince Lombardi roamed the sidelines, often with depleted rosters around him. In my opinion, hes the most talented QB to play the game. It seems a majority of Packer fans were ready to move on from the man and soured on him this offseason. Personally, I think he will be an MVP contender in NY next year and still love him. But it was time. The Jordan Love era needs to happen, if only for the front office itself needing to justify their faith in the Love pick. Rodgers and the Packers were operating on different timelines the past few years, stuck somewhere between going all in and resetting. The front office has put all their chips in on Jordan Love.
The defense was expected to be a top 5 unit, but regressed heavily. Joe Barry was under scrutiny all year long, seemingly incapable of putting his plethora of first rounders in positions to succeed. A late season push did just enough to save his job (apparently).
Favorite win: Dallas Most frustrating loss: Detroit, week 18
Rodgers's exit also raises an interesting thought: will we see the True Matt LaFleur Offense this season? Offensive deficiencies have been blamed on Lafleur himself or Rodgers's hesitancy at transitioning from a traditional west coast offense to a Shanahan-esque, motion based attack. The answer will be uncovered this year, with Jordan Love having 3 years of experience in the scheme and a first round pedigree. As a Love truther in the pre draft season who hated the pick for the Packers, I am fascinated. This pick will make or break Gute's and Lafleur's tenure.
Aside from the quarterback situation, there are lingering questions concerning LaFleur's ability to lead the team in general. The Packers have consistently laid an egg in one game every season of his tenure and have come up short in the playoffs, with some head scratching decisions rearing their head in crunch time of big games (the end of the Bucs NFC championship the most glaring). I also have questions on his staff hirings/retentions. LaFleur hired 2 dogshit ST coordinators before making the obvious choice of Basaccia. He also chose to retain Joe Barry, noted football terrorist, as defensive coordinator. I've read rumblings that Gute has more say over the staff than the head coach, which is unconfirmed but concerning. I don't mean to dump on LaFleur in this piece, only to emphasize how big of a year this is for him. I think his scheme is sound and the guys play hard for him. With Rodgers gone, I think we see less RPOs and inside zone handoffs to AJ Dillon out of shotgun. The offense will have more identity. But if there are 2 more years without the playoffs in Green Bay, the Cheeseheads will advocate for a new coach.
2023 Draft:
Positions of need: S, TE, WR, DT
Round 1, Pick 13: Lukas Van Ness, Edge, Iowa With the world expecting Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Gute stuck true to his type and drafted athletic freak LVN out of Iowa. Van Ness profiles as a Rashan Gary clone, with a high RAS score and unrefined repertoire of pass rush moves. If he works out like Gary, this is a massive hit. In the pre draft process, the only guy who could have realistically been there for GB that I had above Van Ness was Peter Skoronski. He wasn't there, and there was no doubt in my mind Gute was going for LVN afterwards. He'll rotate with Gary and Preston Smith this year, and will kick inside on certain packages. He makes Smith expendable in the future.
Round 2, Pick 42: Luke Musgrave, TE, Oregon State Musgrave has the size and athleticism to be a game changer at tight end. His tape was short but encouraging. His biggest questions are durability and how he will develop, given his late breakout and immediate injury afterwards. My comparison to his playstyle was Travis Kelce, and if he can approach even 70% of Kelce's production in a season, this is a great pick. The biggest hole on the roster was TE, and I have a feeling Gute got the top one on his board.
Round 2, Pick 50: Jayden Reed, WR, Michigan State The process of this pick was nerve wracking. I was one of many fans pounding the table for Brian Branch, the S out of Alabama. When Gute traded down instead, I was telling friends I hoped he took Jayden Reed, and that's what happened. Reed is smaller receiver who plays bigger than his size on contested catches. He carried the Michigan State offense last year after Kenneth Walker jumped to the NFL. My comparison for him is Tyler Lockett. In Green Bay, Reed will take over the slot role, and I expect him to see around 60% of offensive snaps.
Round 3, Pick 78: Tucker Kraft, TE, South Dakota State Another tight end added to a barren room. The former Jackrabbit is similar to Musgrave in a lot of ways- big, athletic, and a willing albeit unrefined blocker. Kraft's addition along with Musgraves could push the Packers into more 22 personal this season, something LaFleur wants to run but hasnt had the personnel for, and I would not be surprised to see him outsnap Musgrave if he develops quickly. I'm really hoping this is the pick that breaks Green Bays 3rd round curse (seriously look it up its so bad).
Round 4, Pick 116: Colby Wooden, Edge, Auburn A former 4 star recruit at Auburn, Wooden collected 17 sacks as a 3 year starter in the SEC and showed inside/outside versatility. He shows an ability to rush with speed and power, but is inconsistent in his pad level and technique. He anchors well in the run game and showed great gap discipline. I don't see him getting many snaps this year, but if he does I think he takes Kingsley Engabare's role on run downs.
Round 5, Pick 149: Sean Clifford, QB, Penn State A perplexing pick until I saw this man somehow has a 9 RAS. Clifford is an experienced college starter who plays with a clear understanding of his role and a passion for the game. My issues with him were accuracy, arm strength, pocket presence, and decision making. You know, playing quarterback. I did not give Clifford a draftable grade and would have preferred Jaren Hall or Max Duggan. But this is really nit picking over a 5th round pick who was drafted to be a career backup. If the staff sees something in him, I'll give it a chance.
Round 5, Pick 159: Dontayvion Wicks, WR, Virginia A 6'1, 206 lb vertical threat, Wicks was inconsistent in his career at Virginia. If he replicated his 2021 production last year, he might have found himself as a day 2 pick. Alas, a new offense and drops led to his availability at this spot. Wicks has a good release package and the ability to stack DBs and get vertical. His tendencies as a body catcher led to drops last year, and he doesn't provide much after the catch. With his profile, he'll be a WR4/5, but could be a special teams ace very early in his career.
Round 6, Pick 179: Karl Brooks, DL, Bowling Green A bit of a tweener, Brooks is a high motor, high effort pass rusher. He flashes great technique and seems to rush with a plan. He can get washed out in the run game, and will need to commit one way or another to defensive end or defensive tackle. He graded very high from PFF, so that's something. To get on the field, he'll have to show more consistency and ability when anchoring down in the run game.
Round 6, Pick 207: Anders Carlson, K, Auburn Apparently, Mason Crosby's replacement. Anders is the brother of Las Vegas kicker Daniel Carlson, who's pretty damn good. There is a connection with Basaccia there, who's known Anders since high school. I wasn't encouraged by his stats at Auburn, but I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in scouting kickers. If Basaccia says he's that dude, then that dude he is.
Round 7, Pick 232: Carrington Valentine, CB, Kentucky Valentine is a WR convert with a long, slender frame. He is at his best in press man, where he has a variety of ways to get hands on the receiver and reroute him. Unfortunately for Vallentine, Joe Barry hates press man and will kill my family if I suggest it again. Valentine's frame can lead him to get bullied by bigger WRs at times, but he is physical at the catch point. He also brings experience as a productive kick returner, something that could be helpful in the future or even this season if the staff wants to keep Nixon fresh for defensive snaps.
Round 7, Pick 235: Lew Nichols, RB, Central Michigan A big back with some intriguing traits, Nichols enjoyed a very productive 2021 before injuries hampered his 2022. Nichols has good vision, contact balance, and power as a north-south runner. He was productive catching out of the backfield, but wasn't asked to run many routes beyond that. His biggest hurdles in the NFL are going to be elusiveness and speed. He lacks both, but should be a decent backup. For the Packers, they used their RB3 less than maybe any team in the league last year. This will be the Jones&Dillon show again in 2023.
Round 7, Pick 242: Anthony Johnson Jr, S, Iowa State Johnson Jr is a converted cornerback who plays with rare physicality for someone of that description. He did his best work in the box or in the slot at Iowa State, and that may be where the Pack will try to get him some snaps this year. He can be over aggressive in his pursuits at times and take bad angles, but that is coachable. Given the state of the safety room, the 7th round rookie may find himself starting some games this season.
Round 7, Pick 256: Grant DuBose, WR, Charlotte DuBose comes from UNC Charlotte, where there apparently is a football team, and he was 2nd team all C-USA last season. DuBose has excellent size at 6'2, and I love his agility on in-breaking routes crossing the face of safeties. He has experience both outside and in the slot, and is an interesting addition to the WR battle at the bottom of the roster, which is going to be highly competitive. It may come down to how good he can be on special teams. Coaches and teammates rave about his work ethic and love of football, and he worked at Walmart while keeping himself in shape during the Covid year. I'm optimistic he can carve out a role for himself and make the team.
Overall, Gutekunst drafted for need at times in this draft, but still stuck to picking guys that fit his type: big, athletic, and versatile. My biggest shock was not taking a safety until the 7th round, but I think it just never lined up with his board. There was an obvious effort to surround Love with talented pass catchers, which is a breath of fresh air from this team. I was surprised that they didn't take a single offensive linemen, given this is almost certainly Bakh's last year in the green and gold and question marks surrounding some of our young guys, but we drafted 3 linemen last year and the staff may have high hopes for Zach Tom to be the next left tackle. The franchise has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to scouting and developing OL.
All told, 2023 is the most excited I've been for a Packer season in a few years. There are so many unknown variables surrounding the team, from Jordan Loves development to LaFleur's offense to Joe Barry's pending glue eating scandal. Media pundits have them ranked somewhere between 20 & 26 in the league hierarchy heading into the year. Personally, I'm a little higher on the Pack, and they will shoot up these rankings if Jordan Love delivers. There's a lot on Love's shoulders. This is the season we've been waiting for with baited breath for 3 years, the post-Rodgers era, and now it's here, for better or worse.

2023.05.29 17:28 EuphoricFlight6249 Best Way to Stay Connected for 2 months, traveling USA to EU

Hi,

I'm traveling to Europe soon for the first time (a few days in Italy and then several weeks in Germany). What is the best thing to do to make sure I can communicate with people back home and have a reliable connection to the internet to help avoid getting lost in a new place? My carrier in the US is Verizon. I assumed it would be cheaper to get a European pre-paid SIM, but is that a bad assumption? And if I do get one, which should I get? Can they be refilled in the event data runs out? And could I still use WhatsApp with my US number? Approx. what should I expect to spend on such a thing, and are these cards readily available upon arrival or is this something I need to purchase now in the states? If it matters, my device is an unlocked iPhone SE 2020.

What Should You Know About ISO 27001 Internal and External Audits?
https://preview.redd.it/45fxahjwbs2b1.jpg?width=6240&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6132fe722b6f9cfcf96488d4fa37362a484bc4cd
The ISO 27001 compliance framework is one of the most well-established data security standards worldwide. To maintain growth, SaaS companies must promote trust and confidence amongst their customers about their ability to secure and manage data.
Getting accredited by the International Organization for Standardization and its compliance protocols (for instance, ISO 27001) is one of the best approaches to demonstrate their credibility. It can help these businesses foster long-lasting relationships with clients, leading to an unimpeachable reputation and an ever-increasing growth in business revenue.
ISO 27001 works with an ISMS (Information Security Management System), which requires frequent audits to ensure that the data infrastructure is functioning optimally. An ISO 27001 audit ensures that your company’s security systems adhere to the standard’s requirements and your organization’s business objectives.
But what are an ISO 27001 audit’s requirements? What do auditors essentially look for? If you are considering compliance with ISO 27001 framework, you must know what it takes to be audit-ready. But be calm if you are not. In this blog, we will discuss everything you need to know about ISO 27001 audits, including why they are important, their frequency, who can make an ISMS audit, and the exact steps involved in a successful audit.

What is an ISO 27001 Audit?

An ISO 27001 audit is an assessment of your data systems, where a qualified and unbiased auditor looks at the three criteria outlined below to draw up a report that details how your organization is faring in its data security measures and which areas can be improved upon —
  • the ISMS or components of it being tested to see if they comply with the requirements of the standard;
  • the organization’s own information needs and goals for their ISMS; and,
  • the usefulness and efficiency of the controls, procedures, and other measures involved.
As the ISO 27001 compliance standard was created to help an organization reduce its information security risks to a manageable level, it is necessary to verify that the implemented controls do, in fact, decrease risks to a point where the risk owner(s) are satisfied and capable of tolerating the residual risk, in addition to the overall compliance and effectiveness of the ISMS.

What are the Different Types of ISO 27001 Audits?

There are two types of ISO 27001 audits—internal and external.
  • Internal audits are the ones that are conducted using the organization’s resources. A hired supplier can perform these audits if the company needs more skilled and impartial auditors on staff. These are frequently called “second-party audits” because the supplier serves as an “internal resource.”
  • External audits are the ones that are most frequently conducted by a certifying organization to get or maintain. To get their assurance of the organization’s ISMS, other interested parties (such as partners or customers) may conduct their audits, which are also included in this definition of the term. This is particularly valid when the needs of such a customer or vendor party go above and beyond the norm.

Why are ISO 27001 Audits Important?

Both internal and external audits pertaining to the ISO 27001 compliance standard are important.
External auditors independently validate your security posture During the external audit. An auditor may provide a knowledgeable and more unbiased view of existing security policies and controls and smart suggestions for further enhancing your overall security posture. Certification audits are particularly crucial since they demonstrate your dedication to security. A well-regarded third-party certification, such as ISO 27001, can provide a significant competitive edge. Additionally, it can shorten the sales cycle and let you quickly advance your business growth.
On the other hand, Clause 9.2 of the ISO 27001 standard requires an internal audit program to demonstrate that an ISMS is compliant and operating efficiently. In addition to being necessary, they also provide businesses with several advantages, such as identifying non-conformities and fixing them before a certifying authority does.
Additional advantages of both internal and external ISO 27001 audits may include the following:
  • It assures that your ISMS is properly implemented and complies with the ISO 27001 standard.
  • It gives you certified confirmation that your ISMS successfully lowers information security threats.
  • An audit also provides a comprehensive understanding of how non-conformities are promptly fixed.
  • It assures that all information security issues, occurrences, and incidents are thoroughly documented so that updates and adjustments can be made seamlessly to reinforce the ISMS.
  • It also guarantees your organization’s dedication to ongoing progress in security matters.

How Frequently Should You Conduct an ISO 27001 Audit?

To help ensure that controls are closely monitored over the long term and your ISMS is always improving, ISO 27001 compliance calls for an internal audit once every 12 months. Customers will find it much easier to trust you with their information and business.
For external audits, your organization undergoes a certification audit right at the beginning when your certificate is awarded to you upon passing the audit. Your company must undergo surveillance audits in the first and second years following your certification audit to receive your certification. Lastly, you will need a re-certification audit once every three years.

Who Does an ISMS Audit?

Your organization will need a certifying body to carry out external audits.
Meanwhile, internal audits can be performed within the organization by hiring a third party that is independent and skilled enough to handle it; as long as they are unbiased and are not auditing functions or processes that they supervise or helped build, this party may be an internal or external resource. If you need someone in your organization to meet these requirements, you must hire an outside auditor to assist you in conducting an internal audit.
In this next section, we will outline five simple steps you can out to use to conduct an ISO 27001 internal audit.

Five Steps to Conduct an ISO 27001 Internal Audit

Internal audits are generally customizable to suit the particular organization’s needs and objectives, but here are five core steps to help you get started:
  1. Reviewing documents
The documentation of how the ISMS was generated should be reviewed by your designated auditor, whether internal or external. Since it is what the internal audit entails, this will assist in aligning the scope of the internal audit with the ISMS.
The key people in charge of the ISMS’s processes and controls should also be named in the documentation. This step is very helpful, especially when the auditor has to ask for more information about the intricacies of the ISMS.
  1. Preparing for the assessment
The auditor(s), with help from the management, should develop a thorough ISO 27001 internal audit checklist of what has to be done during this phase. The time frame and the resources required to finish the audit should be considered.
  1. Gathering evidence
This audit activity actively samples data to demonstrate that policies are being followed, procedures and standards are being adhered to, and guidance is being considered.
  1. Analyzing data
The audit evidence needs to be organized, filed, and examined in light of the risks and control goals established by your organization and the ISO 27001 standard.
The evidence must be organized and checked against the ISO 27001 standard after gathering it. This procedure might show where further audit tests are needed and highlight evidence-gathering shortcomings.
  1. Reporting to management
Once the fieldwork testing and analysis are finished, your audit team will present management with a report. Results should be kept on file as a performance history and evidence that your business complies with the standard’s ISMS requirements. This report mostly includes:
  • An introduction that details the purpose, goals, schedule, and summation of the work completed;
  • The key findings, a synopsis of the analysis, and a conclusion;
  • Results and analysis in detail; and,
  • An explanation of the suggestions and scope restrictions from the auditor(s).
From there, it is the responsibility of the management to monitor the rectification of non-conformities discovered during the audit after receiving the report.

2023.05.29 16:38 arclightmagus The Apartment (Part 22)

First Part 21
Let’s see…. Ah yes, I was telling my…uh.. Well the neighborhood witch that she’d likely created a kind of magical dam in an extraplanar region and so she’d have to do something about it.
Or at least that was my guess. Now we just had to figure out both the hard part and the easy part.
The easy part would be switching off the portal. The problem was going to be A) knowing how long to leave it switched off and B) being able to reconnect.
Unlike modern electronics, the magical community is rather… slow about adopting certain technologies and patterns and so the concept of pairing (like most of us know about with bluetooth and wifi) was… not exactly foreign, but definitely something that didn’t come as a natural progression.
So not only would the portal have to be reconfigured at the ‘sending’ end (thank Terra for what are effective 2-way wormholes - suck it SG1), said portal would have to have something to home in on. And given that Miss Skuld had never actually turned the portal off since she activated it, that made things extra problematic.
But I was being paid in very expensive herbs, so it was on me to figure it out.
As I said, first it needed switched off so it could be re-runed, which would take a few hours at a minimum and would require a bit of research to determine the right runes to create a means of ‘pairing’.
Then those same new ‘pair’ runes would have to be added to this far side. This would help, but again, both would have to be offline and whomever was on the ‘inside’ would be stuck there until the portal was re-established. And guess who the lucky winner on that one was?
Yeah, really…
But again, that’s how being a consultant works. Dirty jobs and at the mercy of clients who need your help, but given the circumstances, short of calling a few wizards who were better with runes, it was not going to be an easy solution regardless.
“How certain are you about my portal being the issue?” Miss Skuld asked as we looked at the arch that formed this side of the portal.
“Sufficiently based on what you’ve told me that I’d find it very hard to believe that it wouldn’t impact something,” I replied, sipping on a cider she’d thoughtfully provided from her garden’s fermenters.
“And that’s a tried and true technique is it?” she asked, rather more cheerfully than the harsh school mistress facade she normally wore.
“Oh yes. Turn it off and on again is practically the very first step. If you can replicate a problem after you’ve done that, that’s when you know you have a real problem,” I smiled slightly.
“Except we already know that it’s a problem or have you forgotten my poor golems?” she seemed slightly hurt.
“That’s not what I meant. But in short, it is a best standard practice at deliberately taking steps to fully reset a system from a base state or as close as you can get to it.”
She considered this and nodded.
“I’ll need to close my shop for the day then. I’ll have to get some spellcasting ingredients and a tracer in case this doesn’t work as simple as turning it off and on again,” her face already returning to the grey, neutral stone that was her normal.
“I’ll need to get some provisions and some camping equipment in case this takes longer than we expect,” I concurred with breaking for the day. “Do you know if there’s a good cross-planar communicator?”
“In theory, yes. But they are research institute issue only and they are exorbitantly expensive to operate, let alone borrow,” she said, matter-of-factly.
“How expensive are we talking?” I decided to ask before realizing it.
“Three 25 gram essentia crystals grade 8 or better per minute,” she said without even a pause.
I swallowed heavily. That was the equivalent of my fee of saffron every 10 minutes. I could afford some luxuries and some back-ups, but nothing of that magnitude.
“Then I guess I’ll just have to do without and we’ll have to be adequately certain of the pairing runes,” I said, shrugging, trying to not imagine being lost in the extraplanar realm for an indefinite future.
“I’ll see if I can provide a means of making it auto apply. I don’t know how good your runes are and I’d hate to make this any harder than necessary in trying to guess between your runes and my own,” she said, in the tones of one who is already certain that your penmanship is not up to standard.
Being fair, she was absolutely correct.
I knew some about runes, but only enough to get into trouble. A bit like being able to read a bit of code, but not enough to actually fix it and more likely to just make a mess of it and/or break it.
I finished the cider and set the wooden mug back onto the table where we had been sitting, pondering a solution.
We rose as one and walked to the portal. I looked at it as closely as I could without my eyes watering. It seemed to be fairly standard, but was clearly formed by some very special vines which had the runes engraved on them. Certainly nothing I’d want to have to try and recreate.
She appeared to think for a moment at the edge of the portal and turned around, looking out at the garden.
I turned with her, in case there was something my senses had missed.
Seeing nothing, I turned to see what direction she was looking in. In doing so, I saw her raise her hands to full extent and a strange kind of warping seem to emanate from her fingertips.
You know that heat waves on the road, making you see water at a distance? It was the same kind of strange bending of air and light, except up-close.
Of course, being around a djinn who can leak fire from their fingertips when adequately upset, I was not overly concerned, but I knew better than to say anything until Miss Skuld was doing whatever it was she was doing.
It took about 30 seconds, but the bending light faded and nothing appeared to have changed.
“May I inquire as to what you just did?” I asked as we turned back to the portal together.
“My golems will now protect you if it becomes necessary and they will respond, to a degree, if you command them,” she said.
“Protect me from what?” I prompted.
“From if you’re wrong,” she said and we stepped through the portal.

We said our goodbyes from there and I left through the front, deciding to hail a rideshare to the local sporting goods store that had a grocery next door.
I thought hard about her last statement.
I couldn’t deny that she was right. I was effectively toying with magic concepts that didn’t have to follow my simple baseline logic. And if there was some malicious force at play, it was someone either targeting her or potentially targeting me by proxy.
Alternately, there was also the strong risk that in doing this, I could be stuck in her garden for days, week, or even months if we couldn’t manage to do this right. At a minimum, someone of equivalent or better extraplanar skills would have to find me, create a portal to me (even a one-time portal would be problematic), have a homing signal to get us back to the right plane, and then portal us back. Such a specialist would be worth a lot more than me, but seeing as this was her garden and not lightly created, I didn’t suspect that she’d be looking to maroon me in extraplanar space.
The rideshare was nice and quiet, which is always a benefit, and I wandered through the camping section of the sporting good store.
For an outing like this, where good weather was a guarantee and I could probably get by with very simple items, the biggest challenge was going to be cooking and keeping anything cool.
I hadn’t asked whether it would be ok for me to have a small fire or not or if there was a means of refrigeration. I decided that the simplest answer would be no on both, at least for anything other than a root cellar or some equivalent (since she did have to keep the fermenters somewhere).
And while essentia or similar powered ‘field equipment’ existed, that got expensive and was usually reserved for teams of wizards on expeditions.
So MREs, dried/freeze-dried foods, and self-heating chemical packs were going to be my friends in this. Imperfect, but without having a better idea on what I was looking at, it was better than surviving on purely fruit and veg (which I know some people manage to do, but I’m not them).
Water wasn’t going to be a problem and given the cider, neither was alcohol if I did end up there for days on end.
Power could be a problem for entertainment, so I grabbed a small solar panel with USB charging and included battery.
I decided on a camping hammock with straps instead of bolts and grabbed a few other odds and ends for hygiene. I thought the clerk was going to swallow their eyes at seeing my fully stocked cart and when I declined any bags, but they dutifully checked me out and I pushed the cart outside and around the corner, just enough to be out of line of sight of anyone except in the immediate before I started loading it all in my bag.
Yes, that’s right dear readers, I have a Mary Poppins/Dr. Who ‘bigger on the inside’/D&D ‘bag of holding’ backpack. And I love it. It’s the first and best thing I invested in when I kicked off my fully independent consulting. Anything that goes in is stacked according to some kind of internal warehousing and if you go looking for something, the enchantment on the bag listens and will lift up whatever it is that you’re asking for. I have a hard time believing that I’ve never had anything like it before or what I would do without it.
Once I finished up at the sporting goods, I decided to skip the grocery, since most of what I could come up with was items that either needed freezing/refrigeration or needed some kind of intense heat source. Since I would likely be lacking both, I would simply do without.
Caffeine was going to be a ‘problem’ but I had some cold beverage instant caffeine type flavored water mix that I could get by on, so that was sound enough for me to press forward on.
Another ride-share to the corner nearest the apartment and into the apartment I went, vanishing from the world outside and realizing that I hadn’t gotten the herbs I’d gone to Miss Skuld’s to get in the first place.
Oh well, my pasta with meatballs and marinara sauce would just have to do without.
That is, until Lucy and Warren found out about my plan for the next day and possibly longer if things didn’t go right. But I’ll get to that later.
For now, it’s a beautiful day and I intend to spend it doing as little as possible.

2023.05.29 16:30 kcr141 Searching For Common Threads 9: The Dark Forest

First Previous Next
Esen:
When we landed at the primary research site, it was quiet at last. As I unstrapped myself and began to stand up, I started forming a list in my mind of all the tasks that would need to be completed.
As a first order of business, I walked over to the other side of the flight deck and began to inspect the hull breach. The hole that had been formed in the side of our ship was smooth on the inside. There was no evidence of any tearing or fragmenting, rather, the metal appeared to have been melted.
“You know,” I said, “I don’t think this was from kinetics fire. It looks like a laser did this.”
“It was a laser,” Tsavolyn replied. “I could see the beam.”
“I mean, it makes sense ‘cause we were moving away from them so quickly.”
At this, commander Taylor spoke up:
“That reminds me, did I hear you correctly when you said that those attackers were pulling twelve G’s?”
“Yeah,” I answered.
“They… that’s not… they can’t do that, that should be lethal!”
“I know,” I said. “Maybe those two ships never had a crew to begin with, however, they weren’t acting like they were computer controlled either. Honestly, I’m even more impressed they didn’t damage their warp drives or stall their reactors pulling those kinds of maneuvers.”
“Unfortunately, we’ll have to worry about that later,” commander Taylor responded, “right now, we need to get our own drive back in order.”
The three of us began to make our way down to the cargo hold. Once there, I found the nearest control panel and instructed the cargo bay doors to open. Sunlight flooded into the compartment.
The first thing that jumped out at me was that, unlike Earth’s spaceports, our landing pad seemed to be entirely makeshift. The bay doors led directly out onto a platform surrounded by guard rails and supported by a steel lattice structure. From there, a set of stairs connected the platform to the concrete floor below. Besides the platform in front of us, there was a concerning lack of service structures.
Then, I saw the rest of the world beyond the guard railing. The human-built structures gave way to rolling grassy hills with forests and mountains visible in the distance. From our vantage point, an abandoned alien city could be seen as well. The city was the reason for the outpost’s construction and was also the only obvious indicator that this was not Earth.
“It may not be quite what you’re used to,” commander Taylor said, “but according to the outpost’s inventory, everything you need should be here.”
I went over my mental checklist again before speaking:
“Alright. So… I need to swap out proto-segments three, seven, nine, fourteen, and… eighteen. We should probably start with three since that one’s kinda the whole reason we landed at all.”
“What is special about segment three?” Tsavolyn asked.
“Proto-segment three is all the way inside of the warp drive’s primary ring,” I answered. “We experimented with other designs that were easier to service, but none could match the efficiency of our current approach. So unfortunately, in order to get to segments one through four, you have to partition them and extract the surrounding buffer. It takes special machines to do this because the drive becomes inoperable if the buffer leaks out.”
“Plus,” I added, “that stuff is toxic and it aerosolizes at standard pressure.”
“We didn’t pack our own equipment because it’s very heavy and we wanted to stay maneuverable in order to give ourselves the best chance of survival,” Taylor said plainly.
The three of us climbed down to the ground and began our preparations.
“I’m going to need some way to get up top to the primary ring,” I remarked.
“There should be an articulated lift here somewhere,” commander Taylor responded. “I can get that set up while you go find any other tools you might need.”
“Alright,” I said. The three of us parted, Tsavolyn traveling with Taylor while I headed in the opposite direction towards the edge of the spaceport. The researchers had set up a collection of temporary shelters and storage units. These structures were built out of flexible plastic supported by metal framework, they were more like habitats than buildings.
Once inside one of the shelters, it was obvious that the outpost was abandoned in a hurry. A variety of tools and electronics lay strewn about on top of a foldable table along with a half eaten bowl of oatmeal and a tablet.
Out of curiosity, I picked up the tablet and powered it on. When the screen lit up a dim orange color and displayed alien text, I realized that the device was of tynaksian design; evidence of the expedition’s cooperative nature.
After turning the tablet off, I set it back where I found it and then got to work. I managed to find a small tool bag and began packing it with everything I would need. I took a set of wrenches, a small flashlight, and a multitude of powered screwdrivers. I also packed a set of pliers along with extra bolts and wires in case any got lost or damaged. As I was searching through various storage drawers, I caught a glint of something gold and shiny. I reached in and produced a roll of PI tape. Remembering the hull breach on the flight deck, I packed the tape as well.
The next couple hours were spent tediously replacing each of the modified warp drive components. Accessing proto-segment three was a delicate process that involved attaching several cables and hoses to the drive’s primary ring, engaging multiple safety mechanisms, and then having commander Taylor activate the extraction machine from the ground.
After segment three, the rest were fairly straight forward. I would simply unbolt a panel somewhere, replace the proto-segment, and then put the panel back. When that was done, I went back inside the ship and used the PI tape to patch up the hole in the side of the flight deck. I also realized, upon further inspection, that the laser beam responsible for the hull breach had continued on its path and damaged one of the control interfaces.
To prevent any complications, I disconnected the damaged interface and then began a diagnostic on each of the components that had been replaced. After that, I headed back outside, finding commander Taylor and Tsavolyn admiring the alien landscape.
“I’m running a diagnostic on each segment,” I told them. “Once that’s done, we should be good to go!”
“Alright,” Taylor responded, “let me know when—”
As he spoke, the commander turned around to face me before stopping mid sentence.
After a moment of silence, I realized that Taylor was staring at something behind me. Cautiously, I turned around and followed his gaze.
An alien stared back at me. Their skin looked like it was composed of very small scales, so they definitely weren’t tynaksian. Looking directly at them, their scales were a crisp white color, however, when the sunlight hit them at an angle, they took on a faint violet hue. The alien wore a strange cyan-colored uniform inscribed with markings that were barely visible, and they seemed to be carrying a small crate full of electronics.
Since they weren’t tynaksian, that currently only left one option:
This was a raknin, probably one from the enemy fleet.
As soon as I had that realization, the alien dropped the crate they were holding and bolted in the opposite direction.
“Hey, wait!” commander Taylor shouted before taking off after them.
The raknin had already reached the other end of the launch pad by the time I recovered from my initial shock. I too began to chase after the commander and our alien visitor with Tsavolyn following close behind.
The concrete floor ended and our chase continued through the tall, lush grass. The ground grew steeper and before I knew it, the raknin and commander Taylor had both disappeared over the top of a hill.
Reaching the top of the hill myself revealed both a large valley as well as the alien’s intended destination. A raknin spacecraft sat tucked away at the bottom of the valley, concealed previously by the surrounding hills.
Taylor was gaining on the fleeing alien, and as they neared the bottom of the hill, the commander leapt forward. He collided with the raknin and the two of them tumbled the rest of the way down.
The alien quickly recovered and continued running. Commander Taylor took longer to get his bearings allowing me and Tsavolyn to catch up with him.
From there, it was a dead sprint to the spaceship.
When they reached the base of the rocket, the raknin scaled a ladder leading up to the cargo hold.
We weren’t far behind.
When I made my way to the top, officially boarding the alien craft, I was greeted with the sight of commander Taylor tackling the alien to the ground.
The alien tried to escape but couldn’t. As they struggled, the commander managed to look at me and shout:
“Tape! Tape! Give me the Tape!”
Tape?
And then I remembered: I still had the polyimide tape!
I opened the tool bag and retrieved the roll of tape I had used to repair the hull breach. I tossed the roll to Taylor and then helped hold the raknin down while he restrained them.
Once the alien was immobile, I stood up and took a step backwards. As I did so, my hand collided with a hard surface and I cried out in pain.
I turned around to see what I had hit, but there was only empty space in front of me. Confused, I looked down at the back of my hand.
There were burn marks.
Tsavolyn:
While Esen and Taylor were handling the fleeing raknin, I had the wherewithal to check if there were any other crewmates aboard the rocket.
I had been on a couple of raknin spacecraft before, but this one was different. It was like the whole interior had been emptied out and replaced with a strange metal lattice. This lattice was densely packed with hundreds of some kind of tetrahedron-shaped device. These devices covered every wall and ceiling. Even the floors were nothing more than a thin metal grating with more of the strange instrument underneath.
It looked like this vessel had been turned into some kind of detector array. I wasn’t sure what kind of array this was or why this had been done, but I figured the flight deck might hold some answers.
Besides us, the ship turned out to be empty; the raknin we encountered had flown here alone. When I reached the bridge, the first thing I noticed was a message displayed on several of the control interfaces warning of damage to the electrical systems.
I picked one of the control interfaces and sat down. As I was in the process of opening the diagnostics menu, Esen came in.
“Hey, do you think you can communicate with our new friend?”
“Probably,” I answered, “but I can’t guarantee that she’ll cooperate”
“I’m hoping they’re at least willing to tell us what they have down in the cargo hold,” He said.
“If you’re referring to all the devices on the walls, I can probably figure that out from here. I have some experience with these ships from before our falling out with the raknins. If I open the diagnostics interface, it will list every subsystem on the ship’s network.”
“Yeah, finding out what those are would also be helpful,” Esen said.
“Also? I thought the hold was otherwise empty.”
“Oh no,” Esen replied, “there’s definitely something in the middle of the cargo hold. We’re not sure what it is because it’s invisible.”
“Invisible?”
“Yeah,” he answered. “It’s surrounded by some kind of cloaking field. Also, the field isn’t safe to touch.”
Esen held up his hand revealing burn marks on both sides.
“Okay, that’s strange. Wait, you touched it twice?” I asked.
“Science has to be repeatable,” he said with a chuckle.
“Okay, I have the diagnostics menu up. It looks like they have… actually I’m not sure how to say this in English. It’s a type of particle, low mass, no charge, emitted during nuclear processes…”
“It’s not in the nucleus of atoms, right?” Esen asked.
“That’s right,” I answered.
“You’re probably thinking of neutrinos then.”
“That sounds correct,” I responded. “In that case, this ship has an array of neutrino detectors.”
“That’s probably what the things on the wall are for then,” Esen said.
“That would be my guess as well. Okay, this I don’t recognize.”
“What is it,” he asked.
“It’s a system listed as ‘frame capture,’ and I have no idea what that means.” I said.
“Could that have to do with our strange object?”
“Maybe?” I answered. “I’m not sure though because this is listed along with the warp drive and the drive complement.”
After a moment of contemplation, I selected ‘frame capture’ and ran a basic, full subsystem diagnostic.
After a few moments, I heard the ship’s reactor change output modes followed by the unmistakable rumble of the warp drive activating. This was confirmation that whatever the frame capture system was, it had something to do with the FTL drive, however that still left a lot of questions unanswered. I had never encountered it before, so it was either new technology or something that had been kept secret.
The diagnostic continued without issue until suddenly, a warning flashed on the screen. I didn’t have time to read it before the control interface went dead. The warp drive powered down along with the reactor leaving us in total silence.
“Hey!” commander Taylor shouted from below, “You two should get down here!”
Esen and I made our way down to the cargo hold. The spaces between the flight deck and the hold were dark now as, apparently, the entire spacecraft had lost power. Fortunately, the cargo bay doors were still open and thus the deck was illuminated with sunlight.
When we reached the hold, we both stopped in our tracks. Something was definitely different.
“Whatever you did caused it to become visible,” commander Taylor said.
He was right. In the center of the room sat a strange metallic object. It had a thick outline in the shape of a dodecahedron, however, the space in the middle was filled with a forest of thin metal strands. It was spiky, messy, and in some way, almost organic.
“Can you ask the raknin what this is?” Taylor asked.
I glanced over at the pilot thoroughly restrained with the shiny, high performance tape. She was staring at the now-visible object, and the fear in her eyes was contagious.
I looked at her and saw myself as a kid lost in the woods.
“Hey, are you alright?” the commander asked.
“Sorry, I’m fine,” I said. “I think the silence is getting to me again.”

---Job---

---Lhamo’s perspective---
---2686 Terran Calenda27 years BF---
I watch the British woman of FrancoJapanese parentage stride from the floor of the Parliament of our (recently capitulated) enemies.
She is surrounded by four of the most physically imposing Humans I’ve ever seen! Not one of them less than 210cm!
I suppose, when our army numbers in the hundreds of billions, finding one-in-a-millions isn’t too hard(!)
Me and the rest of her retinue fall in behind her as she passes through the vomitorium and turns to my left, her right, towards her temporary office.
As large in stature as the durasteel clad soldiers are, they do not compare to the woman’s android husband, 230cm tall and, from the sound of his bare footfalls, a few hundred kilos in mass!
We reach the door of the (newly designated) office of the Terran Representative and she snarls “You four, guard the door…” addressing her bodyguards “…Ezra, Zurab, Lhamo, inside… Everyone else, piss off and find something to do!”
The door closes behind us.
“Bug sweep, darling…” says the woman, exhaustedly.
“No bugs detected.” answers her husband, instantly.
She slumps onto the chair that had to be brought from our ship after the one provided by the Parliament collapsed under her weight the first time she sat in it.
Tilting her head back, she asks “So… how did I do?”
“You did wonderfully, sweetheart.” answers Ezra, immediately, in his flat, serene cadence.
She reaches a hand out to one of his and says “Thank you, darling! You are my rock… but I was really asking these two…” gesturing at me and the KartveloTamil man with her other hand.
My opinion…” smiles Mudaliar “…pitch perfect! No notes!”
“Agreed.” I concur.
She leans her elbows onto the table in front of her, quickly removing them when she hears its groans of protest.
“There’ll be a lot of people back home who think that we let them off too easy… who’ll think that we should have pulled a fucking Versailles on their arses!” she muses.
“A punitive Peace would foster resentment in the gardenworlder populace… They would feel as if their leaders stabbed them in the back by surrendering… Not to mention giving ammunition to antideathworlder bigots!… We need future generations of gardenworlders to think their ancestors were wrong to declare War on us, not wrong to sue for Peace…” I remind her.
“Enumerating their various hypocrisies, warcrimes and the many violations of their own laws that they perpetrated serves that end well… Hundreds of trillions of GU citizens, who personally had little to nothing to do with the War, suddenly finding their salaries cut in half to pay our War reparations would very much be counter to it(!)… Let us hope that demanding the most heinous warcriminals be remanded to Terran custody to stand trial placates the sabre rattlers back home…” adds Mudaliar.
Yes, but…! I don’t know… I feel like we should have got something more from them!… Instructions on how to reproduce their more advanced tech, maybe…?”
Mudaliar purses his lips in a joyless smile and shakes his head “We just (relatively handily) defeated them in a War with technology centuries behind theirs… Their tech is not something we can ask them to trust us with yet… we need to build their trust first. It’s going to take time… It’s going to take…”
*Knock**Knock**Knock**Knock**Knock**Knock*
What!?” snarls Miyazaki to whatever poor unfortunate soul is requesting entry.
One of the towering guards, in their sleek, state of the art durasteel, enters.
“Apologies for the interruption, Mistress Miyazaki… There’s a delivery for you. Already been scanned for explosive, biological and chemical agents etc… It’s clean.”
“A delivery…?” she says, screwing up her face in a mixture of confusion and contempt for a moment before shifting to appraisal and beckoning wordlessly.
The towering man enters the room and stands to one side, revealing a small woman with pink skin, purple tendrils covering her scalp, three teal eyes and three legs with one too many joints.
The girl looks terrified as she walks in, a levitating platform following behind her with a heavy looking cube (around a metre wide, deep and tall) on top.
Looking as if she might be about to burst into tears from her fear, the pink skinned girl holds out a holo toward Miyazaki (though still around 8m away) and says “C-c-could you… s-s-s-sssign h-here, p-please?”
“What am I signing for?” asks Miyazaki, flatly.
“Th-this?” says the scared delivery girl, gesturing at the glossy cube.
Fury flashes across Miyazaki’s face and, before she can traumatise the poor girl, I step in.
“I think what our Representative means is that we weren’t expecting a delivery… Would you mind telling us what this is?” I say, kindly, smiling (without teeth) down at the girl.
“I-it’s… a d-data drive…?” she asks more than tells.
A data drive!?
That’s absurd!!!
With how insanely advanced their computing is, a physical storage device this large would represent several multiples of all the information Humanity has ever set to page!
“What’s on this data drive, sweetie?” I smile, trying not to betray any of my desperate curiosity to her.
“It’s a c-compendium… of a-all Galactic Union t-technologies and ssscience…”
The room stands in stunned silence for 9 straight seconds while we all process what the little xeno girl just said.
She shifts uncomfortably, looking at Miyazaki and, clearly, unwilling to approach her.
Shellshocked, I eventually manage to say “I… can… sign… for that…”
Looking relieved, she hands me her holo and a stylus.
I scrawl out my name in the abugidic script of my native Tibetan, my hand then making a second pass on the line, adding the vowel markers.
The girl looks thoroughly relieved not to have had to get any closer than she is to the intimidating woman behind the desk, in the formal blue dress.
I hand the device back to her and she uses it to direct the platform to unload its cargo.
She does not wait to be dismissed, beating a hasty retreat from the room, leaving behind the single most valuable object ever possessed by Terrankind!
---2687 Terran Calenda26 years BF---
“We need gardenworlders!” growls Miyazaki, frustratedly, as we pore over the plans for the new agency we’re trying to design “This needs to be more than just the Terran embassy to the GU and vice versa! It needs to set the tone for all our interactions moving forward! We need qualified gardenworlders, ready, willing and able to work alongside the Terran staff! Helping us build our networks and win over potential allies in the Parliament!”
“Yes… well… unless you want to kidnap a complement of gardenworlders to staff it as forced labour, then our choices are open it with a Terran dominated staff and hope we can entice more gardenworld employees at a later date or delay it… again!” points out a weary Mudaliar.
Guys…” I interject, equally wearily “…I think we’re past the point of productivity for this evening… how about we call it quits and come back to it with fresh eyes, tomorrow?”
Good idea…” he answers.
The two of us begin getting up but Miyazaki says “Wait…”
We turn to look at her, expectantly.
“How about we go out tonight?… No shoptalk, I promise!…Just think it might be good for us to have a night to cut loose… just the four of us… five, if that hot, young nurse you’re dating wants to come, Zurab?”
Mudaliar smiles “I appreciate the offer… but I really need to sleep… Raincheck?”
“Fair enough… Lhamo?”
I hesitate, considering.
---later---
“Wooooo! Shots! Shots! Shots! Shots shots SHOTS!!!” shouts a merry Miyazaki as she and I raise small glasses of weak spirits to our lips, in a booth in the xeno bar, and tip them down our throats.
Her android husband mimics the action with an empty glass.
She slams her glass onto the table and releases a sigh as she slumps against the padded seatback.
Her expression turns slightly melancholic as she says “Y’know… I don’t know if Im the right woman for this job…”
“You are.” replies her husband, instantly, almost displaying an emotion for a second there(!) “The fact that you were appointed above all other potential candidates should prove your fitness for the role. They could have chosen anyone and they chose you.”
“I agree with your husband… but what makes you say that, Jeanne?” I query.
“IIIII don’t knooow…” she grumbles “…I sort of feel like I was chosen on the strength of my reputation… and my parents’ reputation for ferocity… but, the thing is, while my mum and my shitstain of a father could give a fiery speech, they also had all the other skills you need to be a diplomat as well!… I feel like Ive got one skill and it’s scaring people!”
“That’s why Im here, sweetheart.” smiles Ezra, serenely “You’re the stick and I’m the carrot…”
Thank you, darling… It’s just… much as I hate to give that man the credit… difficult not to think that my father would’ve done a better job if he’d managed to make it hear without getting his ship blasted out of the sky!”
While I have far more sense than to ever say it, it’s absolutely apparent that the husband Jeanne ‘Blitz’ Miyazaki commissioned for herself is, in all ways, the polar opposite of the late father she despises!
I only ever knew him by his reputation but; where her father was a passionate firebrand, Ezra is calm, measured and tranquil.
Where her father was a gorgeous heartthrob who became a handsome silver fox in his later life, her husband (while certainly not ugly) is definitely much plainer in his looks.
Where her father famously favoured flamboyant modern dress, her husband’s wardrobe looks straight out of a Unification era vid in its conservativeness.
Where her father had a slight frame and a diminutive stature, her husband is tall and solidly built.
And, where Yuki ‘Blizzard’ Miyazaki famously left his wife, Charlotte ‘Guerre’ d’Aureville , after a scandalous extramarital affair with Tombe ‘Breeze’ Upash (another (obviously married) diplomat, no less!) in a move that would have sunk the career of anyone else in his line of work, Ezra certainly seems as if he only has eyes for her!
Several times, she has expressed the thought that raising her half sister, Emiko, to be a decent person is the only good thing that man ever did!
My rumination on that is cut short, before I can answer her imposter syndrome, when she says “You ever consider the diplomat track, Lhamo?”
I give a rueful smile as I answer “I’d need a spouse for that, Jeanne(!)”
Her eyebrows raise in surprise as she says “Oh… you’re ace? I didn’t realise…”
I chuckle and shake my head “Not ace… just 42 with crowsfeet…” I gesture to the corners of my eyes “…I feel like, if I were going to meet Mr Right, it would have happened by now(!)”
Bah…!” she dismisses, letting out her Francophone side for a second(!) “…None of this ‘too old to find love’ tripe! You’re still a stunner!… Not to mention an intelligent, vibrant woman with a fantastic personality!…Plus… we’re this close to cracking regen!… Pretty soon, 42 will be the new 25… along with every other age over 25(!) You’ve got all the time in the world!… It’d be really great to be able to hand this job off to you or Zurab!… Either of you’d do better than me, I’m sure!… I could go back to Earth, safe in the knowledge that things were being taken care of!”
“Ma’am…” I lean forward and reassuringly pat her wrist “…I promise you, you are the best person for the job… certainly at the moment, anyway!… Please grace us with your presence for a few more years at least!”
She chuckles “How about you get the next round and we’ll make a toast of it(!)”
I smile back “No problem… but I dont think we’ll be allowed anymore of these…” I gesture to the, one-per-customer, shot glasses.
“Vinjirian ale… 900ml.” says the woman, immediately.
“I will take an empty 900ml glass.” states her husband.
“Got it.” I smile.
“Don’t drink any until Ezra can run chem analysis on it… Don’t want to get drugged!” she reminds me, seriously.
“I promise I won’t!” I chuckle, walking away.
“Oh, and watch him pour! Make sure he doesn’t spit in it or anything!” she adds, a little louder than she needs to but not loud enough that I think the large, porcine, xeno barman will have heard her.
I cross the crowded bar and step to the counter.
“Two Vinjirian ales and an empty glass, please… 900ml, all. Pretty sure you have our waivers for it already.” I smile, with closed lips, up at the orange xeno with the piglike face.
He oinks an acknowledgement and starts pouring.
As I watch him, I notice myself being noticed by a xeno at the far end of the bar.
I don’t turn to look but keep track of him in my periphery while my foveal focus rests, squarely, on the drinks being drawn.
He stands.
Fuck…” I whisper to myself.
There’s one of two reasons a xeno is likely to be approaching me: either, he’s going to angrily vent at me about how I’m a monster and caused him to lose X number of loved ones in the War… or he’s about to test the rumours about Human promiscuity
I’m not particularly in the mood for either but I really hope it’s the latter… I don’t know that I would trust the proprietor to take my side if one of his gardenworld patrons gets belligerent.
As the man approaches, he occupies more and more of my attention to the point that, even though I’m looking right at them, I wouldn’t necessarily see if our drinks were tampered with!
Good thing I’ve got a walking laboratory back at my table(!)
The gigantic man has now made it to within a metre of me on my left and stands, looming over me.
Despite the fact that I know, if push came to shove, I could probably put his head clear through the countertop without too much trouble, it’s still uncomfortable to have such a large person so close.
The first words the man speaks catch me completely off guard.
“It’s been a while, Dr Yeshe… I’m very glad to see you again!” comes a warm, familiar voice, speaking Gangsri accented Tibetan and sounding a bit like a Human with a blocked nose.
My head whips left and up, my eyes resting upon a very recognisable patch of smooth, flat, periwinkle coloured skin between two large, orange eyes.
I haven’t seen this man since I was transferred to Forward Operations, 4 years ago!
My joy is so immediate and genuine that I momentarily forget to restrain my smile, so as not to be perceived as making an aggressive display!
He doesn’t flinch at the brief flash of my teeth I involuntarily give him.
“Well, well, well, well, well!… If it isn’t my favourite prisoner of War(!) What a pleasant surprise, Wing Commander!” I say, my voice joyful.
Then, my face falls as I notice the dark blue bruise across his right eye.
“What happened to your eye, Ong?!” I ask, ready to demand the name and badge number of whatever guard it was that did that to him… then remembering that we’re no longer on Gangsri!
He casts his eyes down and shamefully confesses “It’s… not ‘Ong’ anymore… and it’s not ‘Wing Commander’ either… I’m just Ngngomg, now…”
It takes a second before the pieces click together for me.
I gasp as I realise “*Hhhhh*…You were expelled from your tribe?!”
He answers with a doleful Terran nod.
“Because you defected?”
“Just got released here, yesterday… went to my embassy… found my tribal representative… he punched me… told me not to come back to Gollogng… and… here I am…” he gestures around the bar “…drowning my sorrows(!)”
“That’s terrible, On…Ngngomg! I’m so sorry!!!”
“It’s fine…” he lies “…I’ve got some preWar savings to live on for the moment… should also be due two years salary from the GU military… but who knows when or if I’ll ever see that, given how my service ended!”
“They don’t count time spent as a POW to be time you served?” I query.
He puffs through his lips before answering “They do not, no… certainly not when you became a POW by treason!”
“Is… is there anything I can… do?” I offer, pathetically.
He gives a joyless curl of his lips and answers “Sweet of you to offer but… there’s really nothing to be done… Anyway… it was nice seeing you…” and turns to walk a way.
Wait!” I say, a little more desperately than I mean to.
He turns back, one of his dark blue eyebrows raised quizzically.
“How would you like a job?”
“A job…?” he frowns “A job doing what?”
“Let me buy you a drink and… we can tell you all about it at my table…”

2023 Mazda CX-30 Review: Above-and-beyond the mainstream choices
Mazda's midcompact crossover aims high and hits the mark

https://preview.redd.it/qbto2p7rmq1b1.png?width=1062&format=png&auto=webp&s=d4fbc6b2cfab8968ba1c1eb4be4daaf88fa30806
Pros: Fun to drive; wonderful interior; standard all-wheel drive; class-leading turbo power
Cons: Average fuel economy from base engine; expensive relative to mainstream competitors; smartphone integration is only so-so
Mazda’s ongoing push to be an upscale brand is perhaps best exemplified by one of its least-expensive models. The 2023 CX-30 goes above and beyond the typical mainstream midcompact with a segment-busting turbocharged engine, standard all-wheel drive and an interior that belongs in a class above most of Mazda’s traditional competitors.

As impressive as it may be in that context, Mazda’s advantages come at a price — literally. It’s expensive for the segment and a bit shy when it comes to passenger and cargo space; a Kia Seltos or VW Taos would serve you better in that regard. And although it’s based on the traditionally athletic and nimble Mazda3, its AWD and taller profile add mass higher than where you’d ideally want it. Gone are the days of Mazda chasing lap times with its turbocharged Mazdaspeed models, but the CX-30 is nonetheless an excellent driving companion with near-luxury bona fides to boot.

What's new for 2023?
In short, not much. The standard 2.5-liter engine was massaged slightly, freeing up an additional 5 horsepower and simultaneously improving fuel economy, albeit slightly. Mazda also made some updates to the CX-30’s safety systems and crash structure that should improve performance for rear passengers. The only bad news is that Mazda quietly discontinued the base turbo trim, so you’ll have to spend a bit more to get that extra power for 2023.

What are the CX-30 interior and in-car technology like?
Like the Mazda3 with which it shares so much, the CX-30's cabin makes you go "wow" considering its price and the vehicles with which it competes. Whatever trim level you're considering, the key to this wow factor is how Mazda's current interior design scheme removes visual clutter by reducing switchgear and effectively hiding air vents and door handles. Lower trim levels are sadly no longer available with two-tone color treatments (we suppose most people just want plain-old black), but upper trims can still get white or black leather accented with reddish brown simulated leather trim. No matter the trim level, though, for a car in the $20,000-$35,000 range, CX-30 interior looks and feels special.

It's also of a high quality and quite functional. The steering wheel, which looks sensational, is an absolute treat to hold and has intelligently designed buttons/switches for the infotainment and cruise controls. There's considerable center console space, including a configurable under-armrest bin, and a decently sized forward bin for a smartphone.

Mazda's tech interface is a bit love-it-or-hate-it. The dashtop screen is large and easy to see. The knob that controls it is large, not unlike BMW's iDrive, and ergonomically placed on the center console. It's not a touchscreen, though, as Mazda engineers determined that hunting for touch-operating icons can be distracting. They're not wrong, and the higher-mounted screen is certainly easier to read at a glance. That said, there are a lot of people who don't not care for this setup and specifically prefer a touchscreen like the ones offered in all the Mazda's competitors. Specifically, the lack of a touchscreen can make it harder to select icons in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which were designed to be controlled by touch. There's a reason the Mazda CX-50 now allows touch operation when using CarPlay and Android Auto, but that advancement unfortunately hasn't made it to the CX-30 yet.

How big is the CX-30?
Although it was originally an unusual size, the CX-30 now finds itself among a growing number of midcompact SUVs that slot in between subcompacts like the Hyundai Kona and compacts like Mazda's own CX-5. Others include the Ford Bronco Sport, Kia Seltos, and Volkswagen Taos. In terms of space, the CX-30 is the smallest of that group and is definitely the least family-friendly. Two tall passengers will be able to sit front-to-back on the passenger side, but not on the driver side. Fitting a rear-facing child seat in the middle will be a squeeze.

Cargo space with the rear seat raised is 20.2 cubic feet, which is only a bit better than subcompact models and considerably less than the midcompacts mentioned above. That number is virtually identical to the Mazda3 hatchback, but in our testing, we found the CX-30's extra height allowed it to swallow an additional suitcase (surprisingly, the Mazda3 sedan can carry more than them both). Although its suitcase count trailed its midcompact competitors, it was superior to a pair of small luxury models, the BMW X2 and Audi Q3. We could also fit a golf bag diagonally across the cargo area.

What are the CX-30 fuel economy and performance specs?
For 2023, every CX-30 comes with all-wheel drive, plus a six-speed automatic. There are then two choices of engine. Cars dubbed CX-30 2.5 S have a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four that produces 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. That's more than the base engines of most competitors, plus some of their engine upgrades. It now returns 26 miles per gallon city, 33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. Those figures remain low compared to other base engines, but again, the competition generally has less power.

As for the CX-30's upgrade engine, nothing in the segment can touch it. The turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four produces 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular gas. It'll do 250 hp and 320 lb-ft if you feel like filling it with 93 octane. Fuel economy is basically the same as the base engine at 22/30/25 mpg.

What's the CX-30 like to drive?
If you want to feel what a car is doing through the steering wheel, throttle pedal and through the seat of your pants, the Mazda CX-30 is exactly the type of small crossover you're looking for. Its taller stature means it loses some of the agility provided by the lower Mazda3, but the primary control efforts and feedback are just as exceptional. When it comes to providing an engaging driving experience, no SUV comes remotely close in the CX-30's price range. There's even a case to be made that it provides more driving fun than a BMW X2.

Along those lines, the available turbo engine is there to make the CX-30 feel luxurious and effortless, rather than burn rubber and set lap times like some turbocharged Mazdaspeed of old. On paper and in practice, none of its non-luxury competitors can touch it in a straight line – it obviously costs more, but it's the engine we'd certainly want.

Nevertheless, the base engine is still a peach. It's more powerful than most competitors, boasts terrific throttle response and is paired with one of the smartest transmissions around. It always knows exactly which of its six gears to select at any given time, and when Sport mode is selected, it quickly downshifts when braking into a corner like the sport-tuned transmissions of luxury brands do. It also doesn't clumsily hang onto revs when accelerating thereafter. As a bonus, the Premium trim adds paddle shifters then let you have some extra fun if you're so inclined.

What other Mazda CX-30 reviews can I read?

The turbo engine was a new addition last year. It makes an already fun little SUV, even better, though certainly not to hot hatch levels.

Taking an in-depth look at the CX-30's cargo capacity to see how much luggage it can fit inside and how that compares to the Mazda3 as well as other small crossovers. We also compared it to both the Mazda3 hatch and sedan with surprising results.

2020 Mazda CX-30 First Drive The middle way
Our first taste of the CX-30 features more in-depth information about its design and engineering.

What is the 2023 CX-30 price?
The base CX-30 2.5 S comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, a full suite of accident avoidance tech (see Safety section below), cloth upholstery, two USB ports, an eight-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the Mazda Connect interface that includes an 8.8-inch display and center console controller.

From there, you have a choice of three "packages" that are pretty much what other brands refer to as trim levels. We think the Select is best place to start your CX-30 shopping as for an extra $2,300 you gain 18-inch wheels, blind-sport warning, proximity entry, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, a rear armrest, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and leatherette upholstery versus the standard cloth. The Preferred, new Carbon Edition (pictured below) and Premium packages add further luxuries, most notably a heated power driver seat with memory (Preferred) and leather upholstery (Premium).

All new prices are below and include the $1,275 destination charge (add another $45 if you’re shopping in Alaska).

S: $24,225
S Select: $26,525
S Preferred: $29,495
S Carbon Edition: $30,565
S Premium: $32,775
Turbo Premium: $35,075
Turbo Premium Plus: $36,675
What are the CX-30 safety ratings and driver assistance features?
Every CX-30 comes with a comprehensive array of standard safety features beyond the usual airbags and stability aids. These include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (Smart Brake Support), lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a driver inattention warning system. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning are included on all but the base trim.

Beyond their simple inclusion, these features are also among the best-executed on the market. Most appreciably, they aren't prone to false alarms or constantly beep at you like a scolding nanny.

The government awarded the CX-30 a perfect five stars in every crash test even before the updates Mazda made for 2023. The Institute for Highway Safety named the CX-30 a Top Safety Pick. It received the best-possible ratings in all crash tests and for its front-crash prevention system (both for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents). Unusually, its base LED headlights got the best possible rating of "Good," while the curve-adaptive upgrade headlights found on the range-topping Premium (photographed above) actually got a "Poor" rating due to excessive glare. The CX-30 also received top marks for the ease of use of its child seat LATCH anchors.

2023.05.29 15:55 Bellum_Romanum05 A friendly tip for young secular Turks looking to leave your country for Europe after Erdoğans re-election.

Studies are the best way if you are looking to come to Europe. Don't study in your own country, but apply for a university program (full masters/bachelors degree or perhaps finish your masters program here). This is because your country is turning more corrupt and authoritarian, so institutions in European countries don't tend to trust people graduating from a Turkish university anymore. Your Turkish degrees and references essentially become useless here.
Graduating from a European university also makes you specialized in the field of work you are looking to build a carrier in. It also helps you with learning the language of your chosen country. This will make it much easier to find a good paying job and integrate/assimilate into your country of option.
Remember that despite what you hear, we don't hate Turks! Especially not young seculademocratic Turks who work hard for a good future. Yes, there are a lot of Erdoğan fanboys here that behave badly and give you Turks a bad name. And also some ethnic/religious tensions because of some cultural differences between European secular way of life compaired to people from more conservative middle eastern/asian countries. But generally, any seculademocratic person from any country who works hard to assimilate/integrate are very well liked and appreciated.
I wish you all the best! Good luck with your endeavours

2023.05.29 15:45 goldenmom4gr Transcription of two Marrotte interviews

This is a transcription of this post
MAROTTE INTERVIEW
01/10/2006
13:30hrs
Marotte Interview
(noted in handwriting as "1st")
I went to the Marotte residence and spoke to Marotte, who is a retired railroad man. He told me right away that he is tired of everyone bothering him, and although he wishes someone would find Murray, people keep upsetting the neighborhood. In fact this past weekend, two women from WMUR TV came and talked to him after driving up and down the road in front of his house several times. He said he yelled at them and refused to talk to them about the incident involving Maura M.
Marotte agreed to talk to me about what he knew as I stood outside his front door. He told me that after the crash happened, he looked out and saw someone walk around the car twice. He said the he saw Atwood in his school bus come by about 5 minutes at the most, later, and then saw him back his school bus into his driveway as usual soon after Marotte said he never went down to the accident scene that night. He said that it was very cold, about 10 degrees, and it was starting to snow outside.
The next morning, Marotte said that he went outside and there was a coating of fresh snow on the ground ...not much more like a dusting. He said that he saw footprints going on a trail behind his house that leads to the dead end road that goes up beyond the barn on the corner. He said he thought they belonged to a Fish and Game cop but wasn't sure. Marotte went down to the scene in the morning and talked to someone who was down there. He saw a pool of red on the ground and thought it might be blood, but was told by that person that it was wine that had been dumped out.
I asked Marotte what he knew of B Atwood. He told me that he seemed nice but didn't know him very well at all. He said that he was friends more with Forcier who lives still on the corner of Bradley Hill Rd and Route 112. He said that they would yell back and forth at each other in a friendly-like way. Marotte said that he had been told by someone in the past that Forcier might be a suspect and that Forcier had moved a trailer that he had had there on his property but knew nothing about him at all.
End of Statement
(Personal Notes)
In the Rathbun statement there were indications about Marotte's pick up truck a red Ford F150 with a black cap on it. I saw it there behind the residence, bearing NH registration xxx. The Rathbuns had said that they saw the license plate from the road near the crash site, and from my observations, that did not seem possible at all.
SECOND MAROTTE INTERVIEW
Date of Report: January 29, 2006
Report Prepared by (blocked out)
J Marrotte was interviewed via telephone, relative to certain events concerning M Murray that occurred on February 9, 2004. His wife Virginia listened to some of the interview and stated she was in agreement with what her husband was telling me.
Marrotte stated that sometime between 1900hrs and 2000hrs on February 9, 2004, he went to the kitchen sink inside of his residence to get a glass of water. As soon as he got to the sink, he observed a car with its trouble lights (four way flashers) on. The vehicle was on Route 112, now known as Wild Ammonoosue Road, with the front end facing toward Lincoln, New Hampshire. Marrotte said the car was approximately 250 feet away and at "somewhat" of an angle from his residence. Marrotte also said he had to look through several trees to see the car as well. He described the lighting conditions around the car as "poor" with the only area ambient light coming from a barn at the Westman's property across the street from the car.
Marrotte related he could see a person walking around the vehicle, but he could only describe them as a "shadowy" figure at best. He could not provide any further details of this person. He further stated that the car was off the road with the driver's side of the vehicle "on the woods side" with the passenger side along the roadway. He believed the car had been involved in an accident by hitting a tree and then backing up to the same tree. The vehicle then was positioned adjacent and parallel to the roadway. Marrotte noted that he did not hear or see the accident, but obtained this information from either the police or the "rumor mill."
Marrotte said he later learned that "this person" was in fact Maura M. He said he learned this from local news reports as well as the local and state police.
Approximately 2-3 minutes went by watching Maura Murray, and the vehicle, Marrotte said his neighbor, B Atwood stopped at this accident scene. Atwood was operating a standard large yellow school bus heading toward Lincoln. This was not unusual as Marrotte knew Atwood was a school bus driver. When he stopped, it appeared to Marrotte that Atwood opened the door of his bus and spoke Maura for only 1-2 minutes. Marrotte said he was "quite sure" Maura did not get into the school bus, nor did Atwood get out of the bus. After speaking with Maura, Atwood left the scene and backed his school bus into his driveway. Marrotte said he did not hear the conversation between Atwood and Maura.
Marrotte said he wished he could have helped more, but had no further information to proffer at this time. Marrotte said a "couple of days later" he observed a state trooper with a "search dog" in the area and knew at that time "something must be terribly wrong." He said he learned on this day that Maura M was the subject of an investigation by the state and local police.
Note by me G-mom: I don't know who, specifically, did the first interview. However, we can assume it was in the context of the NHLI. Also, APN did the interview of the Westmans two days earlier (Jan 8) so she is a possibility for the first, or someone else involved in the NHLI.
We know who did the second because of a post by Maggie F which contained an imgur of the first paragraphs (the following page of the imgur seems to skip to an interview of the Westmans and is marked as page 3 of a document)

This Support build's most recent outing was in u/Jayiie's 1mil DPS SS Hydra run. However, there is still quite a bit of room for improvement here, and I thought I'd share it in its current form both for feedback purposes and to satisfy my curiosity on its cost.
Build cost info will be shown in estimated real world dollar values, using the approximated conversion rates in the table below. The final cost estimate represents the amount it would take for a brand new player to copy this build right away as of today. (Disclaimer: Do not do this, it is a terrible use of hard-earned money)

Captain Details

Captain Name Jill Stingray
Captain Career Engineering SUBOPTIMAL. Tact is the preferred Career for Support due to team-wide damage boosts. Sci also has better utility due to Subnuke Beam. The only utility Engi has here is EPS Power Transfer.
Captain Faction Federation
Captain Race Human SUBOPTIMAL. Should be Alien for the extra personal trait slot.
Primary Specialization Temporal SUBOPTIMAL. Intelligence as Primary is better for Intel Fleet. But until they implement loadouts for Captain Specs, I will stick with Temp+Strat for all my builds.
Secondary Specialization Strategist SUBOPTIMAL. Temporal should go here instead, for Atrophied Defenses.

Space Skill Tree comment: My current generalist skill tree. SUBOPTIMAL and I'd suggest benchmarking this one instead: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/903023278703140915/903067938872000532/casualsabskilltree.png
I would retrain if doing so did not also break all my saved loadouts...

I am looking at purchasing a roof rack for my 21 OR. Looking at rails, wasn't sure if I should just bite the bullet and get a cargo rack instead. I plan on carrying my Kayak, and have the kayak roof racks. Thought I may prefer the cargo carrier instead.... What say you, Tacoma people?

The best free Bitcoin transaction accelerator
It often happens that people experience delays in the confirmation of a Bitcoin transfer, and there are several reasons for this, such as network congestion, peak times, or insufficient transaction fees. Other factors, such as the type of wallet (e.g., DeFi or non-DeFi), the size of the hashes, the transaction amounts, and various variables, can also contribute to these delays. When transaction confirmation is delayed, it can be concerning, especially if you have set low transaction fees. However, there are several solutions available, including websites that resend transactions to multiple mining pools. Some of these services are free, while others require payment. Today, I'm excited to share with you a website that, in my experience, is the best one I've ever used for resolving Bitcoin transaction confirmation delays. This site is completely free to use, but it also offers a paid feature with minimal fees. I highly recommend giving it a try, as it has proven to be highly effective in expediting delayed transactions. Remember, if you encounter any significant delays using the free option, you may consider utilizing the paid feature for faster confirmation. The website is

2023.05.29 15:10 patrick-pierree777 Magento 2 Shipping Method Development: A Comprehensive Guide

Shipping is a critical component of the overall customer experience when it comes to eCommerce. This is especially true for Magento 2, which is the most popular eCommerce platform out there. To ensure a successful launch, it’s important to have a robust and reliable shipping method in place. In this article, we’ll take a look at Magento 2 shipping methods, Magento 2 shipping extensions, and how to develop a custom shipping method.

Magento 2 Shipping Methods

Magento 2 offers a variety of shipping methods, including flat rate, table rate, free shipping, and more. To configure these methods, you need to go to the Admin panel, then Stores > Configuration > Sales > Shipping Methods. Here, you can set up your shipping methods and adjust the settings to your specific needs.

Magento 2 Shipping Extensions

While Magento 2 offers a wide range of shipping methods, you may need more options to meet your specific needs. Fortunately, there are a variety of Magento 2 shipping extensions available that can help you customize your shipping process. These extensions offer a variety of features, such as custom shipping rates, multiple shipping methods, tracking numbers, and more.

Developing a Custom Shipping Method

Shipping to the other country is fairly straightforward, as there are a number of reliable carriers to choose from. Some of the most popular carriers include UPS, FedEx, and USPS. Each carrier offers different rates and delivery times, so you’ll need to research which one is best for your needs.
When it comes to shipping rates, you’ll need to set up a rate calculator to ensure you’re providing accurate shipping costs. You’ll also need to make sure you’re providing accurate delivery estimates, as delivery times in other countries can vary depending on the carrier.

For custom, you’ll need to consider the following:

• Shipping carriers: There are a number of carriers to choose from, including India Post, DHL, FedEx, and others. Each carrier has different rates and delivery times, so you need to research which one is the best fit for your needs.
• Shipping rates: Depending on the product weight, size, and destination, the shipping rates can vary. You’ll need to set up a rate calculator to ensure you’re providing accurate shipping costs.
• Delivery times: Delivery times vary depending on the carrier, so you’ll need to make sure you’re providing accurate delivery estimates.

Conclusion

Shipping is an essential part of the eCommerce experience, and it’s important to have a reliable and cost-effective shipping method in place. For Magento 2, there are a variety of shipping methods, extensions, and custom shipping methods that can be used to meet your needs. In this article, we’ve taken a look at Magento 2 shipping method development, and how to develop a custom shipping method for us.

Part 1: Meakpuj

Waves rippled gently through the knotted mass of branches, rocking the boats of the Twaiptšroþan boats. One could tell the tide was high, for the corals further out to sea barely caused the waves to break - at low tide they poked though the foam they caused, creating whirlpools between the spikes. In the village overlooking the small strait between Meakpuj and Nyæŋpuj, among the air-drying fish and the clamour of ducks and turkeys, Šţrooŋ looked out over the coast. Having just returned from a successful fishing trip out into the bay, she took a moment to consider the world in which she lived before preparing her freshly caught meal. She often wondered about the world that lay beyond the shores of the island upon she lived... Why travel beyond when the waters here were so rich? Thanks to the dzneapuakt jwič hooks, she needn't even enter the water to get a meal for her family! It was as simple as adding a small amount of meat to the end, and leaving them dangling off the edge of her boat. "What a life", Šţrooŋ thought to herself, as she turned to prepare her meal.
As Šţrooŋ returned home, so did her partner, Mwiav. Mwiav had spent his day in a rather less relaxing manner, digging into the higher lands for the best jwič. His haul today wasn't perfect, but he had built up quite a collection both for himself and to trade to the Nyæŋšroþ, who visted so often at this time of year. The Nyæŋšroþ visiting was a celebratory affair, as they brought with them pyaivz jwič, which could be mixed with xab jwič to produce far better dzneapuakt jwič than burning xab jwič alone. They had even come up with a quite ingenious technique where a mix of pyaivz jwič and xab jwič would be cooked into a liquid form with dzneapuakt čræð, which burnt for a second time far better than ordinary logs, then poured into special devices to produce many replicas of a single item, vastly reducing the amount of work needed to produce any item they needed. Not only did the Nyæŋšroþ bring pyaivz jwič, but also fruits the likes of which Mwiav had never seen growing on Meakpuj, spices and what they called dvziaţ, a firey drink which was far more impressive than anything produced locally. Where these things came from Mwiav did not know, for surely they could not be fished, mined or foraged just a few miles away?
As Mwiav continued contemplating, he saw some specks gradually turn through dots into boats on the horizon. These were no mere fishing vessels, the Meakšroþ seldom strayed that far from the shore lest they get carried away by the currents, and the Nyæŋšroþ rarely fished, and definitely not in these quantities. He called out his family and made his way down to the shore with their arms filled with xab jwič, the closer he got the more Meakšroþ he saw joining him in his journey. He knew these visitors - he had seen these men many times before, and he knew exactly what what they wanted.
As the boats got closer Mwiav could practically feel the dvziat warming his throat. He didn't recognise any of the faces, but then again he rarely did. Different visitors would come regularly, seemingly as and when they needed xab jwič, so not recognising a face was nothing out of the ordinary. What took Mwiav by surprise was the way they spoke. The Nyæŋšroþ had always spoken in a funny sort of way... Mwiav never really had issues understanding what they were saying, but some words they used were surely made up, and their accent had a strange sort of breathiness to it, and the rythmn of their speech was almost that of a song. These visitors, however, were different. It was almost as if someone had taken a description of the ways Nyæŋšroþ talked and took it to the extreme, and many of the words they used were far removed from anything even the Nyæŋšroþ would say. Mwiav could see into their boats, at the pots which looked just like the ones the Nyæŋšroþ kept their dvziaţ in, and the clumps of pyaivz jwič which looked no different to the once Mwiav had seen many times before. Surely these people were interested in their xab jwič, just as the Nyæŋšroþ had been?
After some back and forth, each sentence being half lost and half understood, a consensus was reached. Mwiav was confused, for these men were offering far more, at least in terms of dvziaţ, in exchange for his xab jwič than the Nyæŋšroþ ever did! With both men smiling, and Mwiav helping to load up the boat of the man he had agreed to exchange his xab jwič with, the man made a comment to Mwiav. Mwiav didn't understand the full comment, but what he thought he heard was something along the lines of "fust šustuč pyeitsupt šwiaţ psoaŋ xeip ǰeaţ", "I think your prostitute looks promiscuous". Mwiav gave the man a confused look, who then repeated himself - "fust šustč pyeitsupt šwiaţ psoaŋ xeip ǰeaţ". As he completed the sentence, the man gestured clearly at Šţrooŋ. How dare the man insult his wife like this? Was it customary to conclude trade deals with slander where this man was from?
In a fit of rage, Mwiav lifted his hand and slapped the man in the face. The man looked up at Mwiav in disgust as blood began to trickle out of his nose. As the Meakšroþ around Mwiav and the traders talking to them began to notice the commotion, all hell broke loose. The Meakšroþ knew they had the numbers advantage, and began chasing the retreating visitors out to sea, attacking them with whatever they could carry. Oars were smashed against peoples' heads, and rocks were thrown at the traders as they scurried back to their boats. As rocks thudded against the hulls, they rowed away from Meakpuj, never to be seen again.
For the rest of his life, Mwiav pondered upon that day. Why had these men come with their attractive deals, only to insult his wife upon their completion? Why had he only seen them once, surely they couldn't have travelled far in those boats? The older he got, the more Mwiav grew to accept that there are some things that we will just never know.

Part 2: Dzoagvrin

The traders of the Dzoagšroþ had long heard of another island beyond Nyæŋpuj, both in rumours passed down from generations, and in conversations with the Nyæŋšroþ when trading for xweipz - they often asked where the xweipz of such purity came from, to which the Nyæŋšroþ would reply "an island further beyond here". As Pwæð got older, he grew more curious about this island beyond... The boats of the Nyæŋšroþ weren't any better than his, so surely they wouldn't have to travel too much further to reach the origin of the xweipz? And wouldn't the xweipz found there be more pure than anything that had been through the Nyæŋšroþ? It only made sense for them to keep the best for himself.
As the quieter farming months came around in Dzoagvrin, Pwæð brought together some friends whom he had previously voyaged across the narrow strait to Nyæŋpuj. At daybreak, they rowed out across the strait as they had many times before, however this time as they approached the coast they did not continue on to land, but instead they rowed east. The coastline continued almost arrow straight for miles, the dense mangrove forest blurring the lines between shore and sea, however eventually the coast began to curve around to the south. With the curve came the first sign of hills for a while, as opposed to the almost endless flatness that eastern Nyæŋpuj had shown so far, however these hills weren't lined with fields like the western hills were... Instead they were covered in a thick mat of forest, barring the occasional fallen tree, with animals calling so loud Pwæð might have thought they were on the boat with him had he not checked his cargo so thoroughly before leaving.
Pwæð was exhausted after rowing for most of the morning, especially after dealing with the rougher waves around the easternmost point of the cape. He split a few loaves of dzæd with his fellow traders and drank some dvzub before continuing onwards, this time heading in a southwesterly direction, away from the coast. Almost an hour went by before they sighted land, however at long last they saw some hills and treetops peeking over the horizon - was this the fabled xweipzpuj?
As the boats got closer to shore, Pwæð saw a break in the mangrove in the form of a sandy beach, which already had some boats pulled up onto it. Above the boats were a crowd of people, all holding... something... Pwæð was too far away to make it out. Were these defenders, here to attack the Dzoagšroþ and keep them away from their land, or were they traders who somehow foretold their arrival eagerly awaiting them? Pwæð's heart raced as knew he would find out in just a few short minutes. Pwæð thought he could make out women and children amongst those crowded down on the beach; surely this could only mean that this was a welcoming party?
Upon reaching the shore, Pwæð's hopes that this was a trading party were confirmed. Each member of the crowd held some highly pure looking raw xweipz, or highly tasty looking šţyaið kwiin, and all sorts of goods inbetween. Pwæð announced loudly to the crowd "I want to buy your xweipz", only to be looked at as if these people had never heard a man talk before. He gestured, pointing to himself on "I" and the tin nodules the crowd were holding on "xweipz". This got a response, Pwæð thought it sounded affirmative but it was hard to tell through the downright odd speech of these odd people, who talked like some sort of an extreme caricature of the Nyæŋšroþ - harsh, monotone and using all sorts of basic words such as "dark grey rocks"... Had they never thought to just call the rocks by their actual name, xweipz, before?
Looking around, Pwæð could clearly tell that these people were backwards and likely stupid. There were no terraces to be seen on the hills further inland, and while their boats looked sturdier than those from Nyæŋpuj or Dzoagvrin, why did they need so many boats when they clearly didn't travel to trade? He began talking in a very oversimplified manner, with a bunch of gestures. "I want dark grey rocks.", he said, pointing at the xweipz. "I give blue-green rocks and spice juice". This clearly got a response to the man he was talking to, who gestured to his family to bring over more xweipz. Knowing the man was clearly stupid, Pwæð offered a rock bottom price. H didn't even offer all the goods he had brought - these backwards people were lucky that he wasn't just taking it from them. Of course, this was accepted. "Pure xweipz for this cheap, and just a few extra hours of travel? This island must have been sent as a reward from the stars", Pwæð thought to himself as he loaded his spoils into his boat.
Once all the xweipz was loaded, Pwæð turned to the man he had just fleeced. Still giddy from getting such a good deal, and a little tipsy from all the dvzub he had drunk on the way over, he said "šustuč mruupt čyeapz, fust šustuč pyeitsupt šwiaţ psoaŋ xeip ǰeaţ" - "you are a lucky man, I think your wife looks very pretty". The man looked confused, so Pwæð repeated himself: "fust šustuč pyeitsupt šwiaţ psoaŋ xeip ǰeaţ". For seemingly no reason, this threw the man into a fit of rage. Pwæð felt a ringing in his ears and a stinging on his skin as a hand smashed into his face. He wasn't quite sure what happened next, but he did know there was a chorus of shouts from the group on the beach, as oars and rocks began to be pelted at the delegation, cowering back to their boats.
As the minutes passed of Pwæð and his friends rowing out to sea, it became clear that they were not being followed. Phew. Blood lined the bottom of Pwæð's boat, and he began to feel more and more dizzy as the group approached the cape, with its angry, towering waves. The tide was lower now than it had been earler, which forced the group to row slightly beyond the reef, in the rougher sea. As Pwæð's boat rocked side to side, he worried about how his sensation had gone from dizzy, to sick, to ----. As he was thinking, a huge wave had come in and swept the boat clean over, dumping Pwæð and his cargo of xweipz into the ocean. His ears ringing more than ever, Pwæð tried to swim up to the surface, but it was no use - the current was pulling him down. As he kicked upwards with all his might, he saw shadows approaching beneath the waves. He looked at the cloud of blood coming from his upturned boat, and screamed in desperation. There was nothing he could do.
end.
