2023.03.25 02:05 SendAwayThe_Tigers[List]Let's talk: Artists who released a classic debut album and then just kept going.
I've been listening to 80s Iron Maiden recently and I thought about how they came out with their classic self-titled debut that defined the NWOBHM and then released classic after classic, culminating with 1988's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (not just my favourite Maiden, but my favourite metal album of all time). Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time, Seventh Son. An utterly astounding run. I suppose there's an argument that Killers is a bit weaker than the rest, but in my mind it's still better than most metal albums released in 1981, and it does have the outstanding title track and the excellent instrumental "Genghis Khan". Maiden fell off pretty hard after Seventh Son and IMO wouldn't release another great album until 2000 with Brave New World, but their 1980-1988 run speaks for itself. It got me thinking about other artists that released a classic debut album and then, instead of dropping off (Guns N' Roses, The Stone Roses) or simply disappearing altogether (The Sex Pistols), instead continued to release top quality albums for a while afterwards. I can think of three examples off the top of my (admittedly relatively sleep-deprived) head: Black Sabbath, Metallica and R.E.M. Sabbath's first six albums are legendary. We all know this. They essentially created metal with their self-titled, then perfected it with Paranoid, then spawned thousands of doom and stoner bands with Master of Reality, then experimented with Vol. 4 (my least favourite of the six, but it's still pretty good!), then explored prog with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, then - well, Sabotage is a bit of a drop off, I suppose, but it has "Megalomania" and "Symptom of the Universe" on it, so that's enough for me to include it! As with Maiden, Sabbath fell off hard afterwards with the below-par Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die (though I have a weakness for the latter's title track) and then released two stone-cold classics with Ronnie James Dio before ending up a bit all over the place in terms of album quality afterwards. Metallica basically invented thrash metal with Kill 'Em All (which, to my ears, still sounds ridiculously heavy for 1983), and then made my second favourite metal album of all time in Ride the Lightning, then made the immortal Master of Puppets, and then of course the epic ...And Justice for All, which took thrash to its peak in terms of intensity and progressiveness. Their self-titled isn't as bad as some say it is, but it's not on the level of their first four, IMO, so I haven't included it - some may disagree. And of course they haven't really got near the level of their first four since. And finally, R.E.M. Starting with the greatest EP of all time, Chronic Town, they then released the greatest album of all time, Murmur, and followed it up with the almost-equally perfect Reckoning. The influence these three releases had on the past 40 years of indie/alternative music is immeasurable. Fables of the Reconstruction is a drop down in quality but in my eyes pretty underrated, and Lifes Rich Pageant and Document are also classics of alternative music. Some R.E.M. fans would say their great run continued to New Adventures in Hi-Fi, but as much as I love Automatic and the heavily underrated Monster, I just think that Green and Out of Time are a bit too inconsistent to be on the level of the other albums. But what a run regardless! So, does anyone have examples of other bands/artists that released amazing debut albums and then kept going with top quality releases? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and see if there's any I've forgotten!

2023.03.25 01:02 phatRVBudget for FAA Boosted -- Interesting Mention of Mental Health of Young People
https://aviationweek.com/air-transport/safety-ops-regulation/budget-request-highlights-faa-certification-backlog The FAA is understaffed for certifications for many aircrafts and systems take too long Interesting item mentioned by the FAA: " “An aging general aviation pilot population has led to an increased number of medical conditions reported on applications that require monitoring, commonly from four to six health conditions,” the FAA said. “On the other end of the age spectrum, the 16-25-year-old population entering the educational system to become tomorrow’s professional pilots have a high incidence of treated mental health conditions, "
2023.03.25 00:58 AmethystVibes86Can Anyone Help Me Understanding This…?
Filed & accepted on 3/16 via tax preparer electronically filing my return. It was a Thursday so I’m pretty sure I’m an 05 cycle. Last night my transcript updated to basically nothing. The main page on ID Me says Your 2022 Return Has Not Been Processed in a light blue box. When I go to my transcript on 2022 is on the bottom 2 boxes, but there’s nothing there no numbers just zeros like they didn’t input any info from the return. The top 2 transcript boxes still say N/A. Ugh…. Was so needing my refund, I don’t have time for BS 😒
2023.03.25 00:56 Informal-Duty5258Anyone deal with medical denial over Topamax?
To be clear, I haven't received my letter from the FAA on the final decision yet. I just saw this today and called the FAA and was notified that I have a letter coming to me. But over the last 6 months in dealing with this deferral it takes 2ish weeks for the letter to get to me. History: I started experiencing headaches on the right side of my temple in 2020 and was referred to a neurologist. I got an MRI (nothing abnormal) and a CT scan (nothing abnormal) and was diagnosed with "hemicrania continua". I was first prescribed indomethacin, which is approved by the FAA, and all of my symptoms were resolved. But my doctor wanted me to try Topamax so that I wouldn't be continuously taking an Nsaid for long periods of time. Fast forward 2.5 years later and i haven't had any symptoms. I go in for my 2nd class medical and the Topamax gets flagged and my medical goes into defferral. I stopped taking Topamax to the of my exam and its been 6 months with multiple follow-ups with my neurologist. I'm still symptom free without any medication and my prescription was officially discontinued on 12/29/22. I've gone back and forth with the FAA by providing more information as they ask for more with every letter. My neurologist has provided progress notes stating that I'm not on it anymore and that my prognosis is resolved. It has been a long and agonizing process dealing with this. The FAA takes 4-6 weeks to send out a letter, I get the information from my doctor and overnight the documents the same day, the FAA takes 3-5 weeks to open the letter I send and then 3-5 weeks to look at it and respond. Im wondering if anyone has dealt with a similar situation. I finally see "Certification Decision" but it's accompanied with a big red stop sign and red letters that say I'm not cleared to fly. Is this the end? What are the odds of it being special issuance potential? I've been waiting and stressing for 6 months and the next few weeks are going to be the worst. Any experience or advice with this would be appreciated. https://preview.redd.it/0bcbqe9j0spa1.png?width=2516&format=png&auto=webp&s=913dc5f4b51580f268273fe4af659cf63752e250

2023.03.25 00:10 schens9Some comparisons of early 1800's standard spoken Swedish with the standard Swedish of today
Here what is described is the standard language as spoken in central Sweden. At the opening of the 19th century the vast majority spoke their own dialects completely independent of the standard language, but later a language shift started towards the standard language, beginning in larger cities in the 1800's and in all of the country in the 1900's, a continuous process to this day. A common misconception is that the standard language is based on the dialects spoken in Uppland or around Stockholm; in reality the standard language is based on nothing but the written language, although as can be seen, spoken standard swedish agreed in many more points with traditional dialects. The spoken standard language is obviously younger than the dialects and came to be as dialect speakers gradually modified their speech to conform more and more with the written language. The end product of language standardization is not the same in all parts of the country but carries traces of the dialects it replaces, so called regional standards(sw. regionalt riksspråk). For example "Scanian", as spoken today is not a dialect in proper sense but a variant of the standard swedish language with very little in common with the genuine traditional dialects it once replaced. The regional standard described here is the central swedish one. The examples are mostly taken from Lärebok i svenska språket from 1813 by Carl Ulric Broocman. T-loss
spoken: barne, vattne, troge, inte, hvilke, de, han ha svara, lidi, tagi written: barnet, vattnet, troget, intet, hvilket, det, han har svarat, lidit, tagit
This trait, which has happened in central, northern and eastern dialects (see this map), is more uncommon today, with influence from the written language supported by the area which never went through the loss. The standard language in Finland however still uses the forms without -t, as no substratal dialects retain -t. In the singular neutral ending -et the t-less form appears sporadically, though in supines -it, -at it still is rather common, though this is not thought of as standard. pronounciation and alternates with forms with -t. Det is normally pronounced with ä, the pronounciation with e deriving from the stockholm merger of e and ä, although supported by the spelling in this case (the ä-sound being written with e is common in swedish and danish writing). *D-loss *
spoken: hunn, hann, ve, trä, be, hva, bla, bo, sta, go, me, onn written: hund, hand, ved, träd, bed, hvad, blad, bod, stad, god, med, ond
The assimilation -nd > -nn still occurs occasionally although might be seen as substandard. The number of words that can still be pronounced without -d is reduced mostly to only a few common ones such as bröd, med, god, vad and more, although many such examples might be seen as substandard. Med is normally pronounced with ä, confer det. G in the adjective ending -ig
This is still the standard pronounciation, although the spelling pronounciation occurs occasionally. R in -arne/-arna and in är and har
spoken: flickåna, gossana, fruktena, han ha, han ä written: flickorna, gossarna, frukterna, han har, han är
The definite plural forms without r no longer occurs in standard language. Today ha as an auxillary verb can appear both with and without -r. In är forms such as ä or e are still dominant. The definite article -en in words ending with n(d)
spoken: slå hunn me hann, ja talar me munn written: slå hunden med handen, jag talar med munnen
This mostly only exists lexicalized such as Röda hund, gå upp på scen, or in certain words such as botten (på botten, instead of på bottnen) -de in preterite of the first conjugation
spoken: han vänta, sakna written: han väntade, saknade
This, common to the vast majority of swedish dialects, is still the most common standard pronounciation, although -ade from the spelling does occur. In natural speech -ade only occurs in the province of Småland and nearby parts of neighboring provinces. Neutral plural definite
spoken: barnena, djurena written: barnen, djuren
These -ena forms still occur amongst older speakers but have mostly been replaced with the literary -en. These forms are native to Uppland dialect and during standardization process in the 1900's seemed to spread to areas where they traditionally didn't occur, leading people all over the country today to mistake them for local dialect forms. Adjective ending -er
spoken: gråer, trötter written: grå, trött
The old nominative ending -er had fallen out of use in the written language but still occured in standard speech in central sweden at this time. Today it only occurs dialectally. Enclitic pronouns
spoken: ja trodde't, slå'n, slå'na written: jag trodde det, slå honom, slå henne
These enclitic pronouns still exist in standard speech to some degree but are getting more and more uncommon. They are common in all swedish dialects and older written language but fell out of use in the written language in the 1700's. Singular words noted as being pronounced differently than they are spelled
mäj, däj, säj, dåm, ve, te, di, bol, gäle, gål, åf, körka, förti, si, tri, heller, bätter, minder, länger mig, dig, sig, dem, vid, till, de, bord, gärde, gård, af, kyrka, fyrtio, si, tre, hellre, bättre, mindre, längre
The forms mäj, däj, säj remain the standard pronounciations. The pronounciations te, ve and å(v) (also used stressed in compound words such as slå té, ta vé) have been replaced by the spelling pronouniations till, vid and av (unstressed ti, vi, a). At this time the use of dom in the nominative was seen as a clear sign of substandard speech. The standard pronouncation was di. The old pronouncation körka has today been replaced by the spelling pronounciation kyrka, while the similar word fyrtio retains its pronounciation förti. Si and tri are forms corresponding to the majority of swedish dialects. Today they are replaced by se and tre but still occur in standard Finland Swedish. Heller, bätter, minder, länger, are today unknown in standard speech. The inclusion of words such as bol, gäle and gål is interesting, as it shows that the so called thick l sound was still used within the confines of standard speech. By this point however, it was increasingly coming to be seen as a colloquial form, not fitting in in formal or offical speech. The use of thick l for older rdh such as in ord "word" is common to most traditional dialects in Sweden outside of a southern area which instead has -rdh > -r in these words, as in Danish (see this map). In central Sweden it at first started dissapearing in Stockholm, but as late as in the 1850's Ladugårdsgärde in Stockholm is recorded as being pronounced 'lagålsgäle'. Lastly, another thing worth mentioning is that by this time the standard language had already or was nearing completion of the merger between the feminine and masculine genders. This is one of the major differences between standard swedish and nearly all traditional dialects. This border would have been very marked at the time. Barring single exceptions all traditional swedish dialects maintained and still maintain (to the degree that they are still spoken) the three-gender system. See [this post](www.reddit.com/dialektecomments/yon00b/om_genus_i_svenskan/) for more information regarding that.

About The Winemaker: Josep Alvarez is a young man in the tiny grape-growing village of Santa Eulália, in northern Spain, where his father grows black grapes that are turned into cheap vinegar. Joseph loves the agricultural life, but he is the second son, and his father’s vineyard will be inherited by his brother Donat, the firstborn. He yearns for a job growing grapes and for an opportunity to marry Teresa Gallego. In Madrid, an assassination plot, conceived against the political leader of Spain by men of wealth and power, creates a storm of intrigue that sucks into its vortex a group of innocent young farm workers in Santa Eulália. How Josep’s life is changed drastically by these events, and how, ironically, they gradually turn him into an inspired vintner with an evolving vision of life, is the fascinating story of "The Winemaker". During the Book Club, enjoy four fantastic Spanish wines to taste. Chef Bryan will create a pairing board of house–made Spanish tapas, cheese and charcuterie to accompany the tasting. Reservations required. Link:http://www.nextthreedays.com/FeaturedEventDetails.cfm?E=685385 31. Hello everyone. I deleted my previous post because I approached the problem in an impossible way. I hope this approach will work and will be clearer. For a card pool game where
a red card is a hit
0 hit is a failure/no effect, 1 hit is partial effect, 2 is average effect, 3 is good effect, 4 is great effect, 5 is excellent effect.
a pool can range from 1 to 10 cards
with 4 cards already, you have less than 10% to fail.
I am looking for a simple/light/quick-to-assess rule, that exist outside of this system so that:
option 1/ whatever the number of cards, you still have a 10% to fail (or at least partial effect), but those 10% should not add up if you have less than 4 cards.
(impossible?) option 2/ where once you have 3 cards or more, the probability to have 0 hit or 1 hit stop to be reduced
Some examples to make it clearer: - if 4 cards of the same number are drawn, it is a failure (or a partial effect) even if hit cards are drawn. But I prefer to avoid additional mental load. - add custom cards (each card has a 1/4 symbol on it so that when you draw 4 of those cards, the symbol is full) in the deck so that the probability to draw 4 of them at the same time is 10%. if 4 custom cards are drawn, it is a failure (or a partial effect) even if hit cards are drawn. But I prefer to avoid custom stuff. Do you have any cool ideas? Thanks everyone! Ps: I am aware that dice and cards can deal differently with probabilities. Please let's consider it is not relevant to the problem. The https://anydice.com/ formula for the probability is loop N over {1..10}{output [count 1 in Nd2]} Edited for clarity
A/N: some of these ideas are shamelessly stolen from the comments on my last entry all those years ago. it's quite a few, so I'm just gonna leave it as a "you know who you are" situation to not beak up the story too much. Here's a link to the last one if you're new, or need a refresher [Excerpt from Terran Contributions to the Federation: Warship Classifications] Of course, being, well, Terrans, they did not stop at mere ship classes, but even developed subclasses to highlight trends found in ship design. Some of the notable ones are listed Dozer This subclass refers to Bulwark-class ships that maintain some form of offense, often allowing them to be deployed without backup Notable examples: the HFS The Fucking Wall, known for the sonic cannons completely hidden behind its armor plates, since due to the nature of soundwaves they don't need an opening in the way normal cannons do. No, we don't know how the Terrans made sonic weapons work in space; the HFS NOT THE BEES, known for deploying a swarm of drones to disassemble the enemy craft right under the pilots' ambulatory appendages. Terrifying; the HFS Leeroy Jenkins, a bulwark-charger hybrid known for taking the subclass literally and plowing through enemy lines, throwing any attempt at formation tactics into disarray. Surprisingly, it's not piloted remotely like most chargers, much to the questioning of the crew's sanity. Said crew is also oddly fond of the Terran delicacy "Fried chicken" Grappler This subclass consists of ships, usually Shiva-class, that use tractor beams to throw around enemy ships or space debris notable examples: The previously mentioned HFS Jackass, first of its kind and showing a preference for debris-slapping over grabbing ships directly; the HFS Spiderman, known for using a physical tether as opposed to a tractor beam, allowing for more vicious slingshot effects. The crew is also fond of taking "selfies" via a drone ship; the HFS JOHN CENA, a hybrid with the Stealth subclass (see below) that sneaks up on enemy ships before slamming them through a giant drone-fabricated table, followed by moving one of the sub-bridges over the front of the main bridge repeatedly in some sort of taunt; the HFS Get Dunked On, known for constructing a mass accelerator ring before throwing a nearby asteroid or ball of debris through it, right onto the enemy bridge; Stealth This subclass refers to a growing number of ships that employ a cloaking device following the success of the HFS Other Half. The humans refuse to share how they simply, ignore incoming light like that Notable examples: the HFS Hello There, a battleplate known for using the cloaking device to sneak in amongst enemy formations, before unleashing either a point-blank broadside and/or blowing up their engines; the HFS It's a Friendly, A smaller Bulwark known for sneaking in like the Hello There, but then disguising itself as an ally, and using the comm channels to disrupt the flow of information; the HFS Croatoan, which has never been seen in person, with the name being a speculation due to the word being found scrawled on the walls of ships found drifting light years from their last marked position, in perfectly good repair and fully stocked but with the crew entirely absent; Splitter This subclass refers to ships that employ a smaller subship as part of their combat strategy Notable examples: the HFS It's So Pretty, another Stealth hybrid Shiva-class which uses a bait ship disguised as an "undefended merchant vessel", luring pirates into range of its vicious shattercannons; the HFS Power of Flex tape, a Grappler hybrid which uses its tractor beams to wield what can only be described as a ship-scale version of the human "chainsaw" in order to slice enemy ships in two;
