"Champion of Hyrule" Challenge Update
2023.05.29 16:51 fanficwriter1994 "Champion of Hyrule" Challenge Update
Note: This is an update on my challenge, since I had this idea brought to my attention. It kind of makes sense to me anyway.
You awaken, startled, and find yourself in a strange room with blue water flowing from up high, you standing in the center of a hexagonal platform with six other platforms, adorned each with a different symbol, at each of the points of your platform.
Standing on the platform with the yellow symbol you find a blonde woman who you would recognize to appear much like Princess Zelda from the The Legend of Zelda series, though none of them seem to match her appearance exactly.
"Greetings, traveler from another world." Speaks up the woman, smiling mildly at you. "I am Hylia, goddess of this realm and agent of the GOlden Goddesses who created it. I am sure you wonder how you got here or if this is even real, but I assure you, it is. I have brought you here on recommendation of a certain, impish deity from outside this realm, with a request." Explained Hylia and a lifts a hand to create a ball of light.
"I was granted the ability to host a, as your people call it, Jumpchain, and directed to take you on as a Jumper, as for why I am doing this, well... There hasn't been born a hero in this timeline. Link doesn't exist here." She sighs and shakes her head.
"For that reason, I have called on you, to take the role, so let me get to the actual rules next." She explains.
- You must take each Main Series Zelda game jump in chronological Order, as in the timeline chronological order.
I. Skyward Sword
II. Minish Cap
III. Four Swords
IV. Ocarina of Time
V. Majora's Mask
VI. Twilight Princess
VII. Four Swords Adventures
VIII.1 Adult Timeline/Downfall Timeline your choice
VIII.2 Wind WakeA Link to the Past
VIII.3 Phantom Hourglass/Link's Awakening
VIII.4 Spirit Tracks/Oracle of Ages or Seasons
VIII.5 None/Other Oracle game
VIII.6 None/Oracle of Scenario
VIII.7 None/A Link Between Worlds
VIII.8 None/Zelda 1 Gauntlet
VIII.9 None/Zelda 2
IX. Breath of the Wild (Final of this section of the chain)
- You may not use the Universal Drawbacks Supplement.
- You may only use standard Supplements such as Cosmic Warehouse or it's replacers, Bodymod as well as Housing, Dock and so on Supplements.
- You can choose 1 Drawback in a Jump when you make your build, it's negative effects are doubled but you may take it's CP into all other Jumps too, granting that CP the Drawback gave to your starting budget.
- CP carried over from Drawbacks are cut in half during Gauntlets.
- Companion Purchases and Imports are free of charge.
- If you hook up with somebody and have a child, it can become a Companion.
- You cannot quit the chain until you're done with all of the above jumps as well as one more additional Jump.
- You must take the role of Link and do his job.
- As Link, you must be Hylian though in the Adult Timeline you may choose to be one of the other races as that Link wasn't initially chosen but become the hero of his own volition, you carry the race choice into the Spirit Tracks Jump.
- Heart Container are a thing here too, but you will start each Zelda Jump with only the starting 3 heart containers. They work as damage sponges, keeping you save and healthy until they run out.
- You cannot take the Triforce between the Jumps of this section of the chain, if you as Link would have one of the Triforce aspects, fine, that is just part of the jump. But you cannot rip the Triforce of Power out of Ganondorf's stiff corpse after Twilight Princess and take it into Four Swords Adventures, sorry.
- During Gauntlets and Powerloss situations (Item or Perk loss) you may choose 10 Perks and 10 Items from the jumps listed above and take them along into those jumps but they're scaled down to local levels if they're too OP.
She took another breath, smiling a bit. "Naturally I won't demand this without further recompense after you save my world, naturally." She states and takes a last breath before running into the rewards for basically marathoning all of the Zelda Franchise:
- You will be known in future Jumps as "The Hero of Light", with all things dark and evil knowing you on sight and knowing that you have faced far worse than them in your time. This grants you the sort of treatment reserved for police officers as these beings know, you are the Immune System against their kind.
- You may take Generic First Jump, Generic Virgin and Generic First Gauntlet following this series of jumps. However, Gauntlet rules for powers are in effects in these jumps.
- You are granted the Triforce for real this time, though because of divine politics it isn't omnipotent outside the world of Hyrule. Once per year it can be used to grant a wish up to and incuding something on the level of restoring the Lorule Triforce or reviving the dead.
- The Triforce grants, for each of it's components, one of the following boons:
I. Power: Grants Immortality up to three times a Jump with only extreme damage from weapons that are explicitly powerful against you working. Also grants a x10 boost to all physical attributes.
II. Wisdom: Grants near limitless magical power, greatly increase intelligence, a x10 multiplier to the speed at which you're learning new information, as well as allowing you to grant your Perks to another person if they agree to it.
III. Courage: Never be frozen in fear, always able to react and act. You also have a strong will, able to withstand incredible hardships, resist attempts to break your will and even resist any and all efforts to possess you. Lastly, no amount of time can rust your blade, your skills will remain as fresh and well oiled as if you had been practicing nonstop for years. Lastly, if you would die for real, another you is born and the plot and your time in a Jump shall not continue until that you is at least 12 years old, which in Zelda terms means they're ready to kick ass and take names.
IV.1 Additionally, the three grant the following spells: Din's Fire: Create a powerful fireblast around you at base, may also be used as Pyrokinesis and heat control.
IV.2 Nayru's Wisdom: Create a bubble shield around you that lasts 3 minutes at base, may also create a panel or large dome shield of up to 50 meters in circumference. Attacks cannot penetrate this shield while it lasts.
IV.3 Farore's Wind: A Teleportation Spell, can bring you to any building you've been to or out of a building you're in, regardless of teleportation restrictions. Has enough range to reach the International Space Station in your world from the Mariana's Trench's deepest point.
- All of your Companions, gained here, share a Companion Slot, meaning that for the price of one Companion, all of them can be imported. However, they do not share the same companion stipend, instead each gets their own as separate companions with a +400 CP to any stipend they would get and another +300 CP for Item Sections and any special sections of a jump. Don't want your comrades getting held back, right?
- Weapon purchases and upgrades stack, all manual upgrades are also fiat backed. In essence, if you have several purchases of the L2 upgrade applied to, say, the Master Sword, each of them will multiply the power of said weapon.
- Fi, Sword of the Hero: The spirit of the Master Sword, Fi, has regained complete self-awareness and may manifest once more in physical form. I have integrated knowledge acquisition abilities into her that will work in all future jumps similar to how it worked in the time of Skyloft. She also imports separate from Companion Slots automatically with 800 general CP and 400 CP as a stipend for Item sections and other sections like that separate from Items or Perks. CP from importing her directly naturally stacks on top of that but not in the way of the other companions. Lastly, she can, like in Hyrule Warriors, assume the form of the Master Sword which she can manipulate telekinetically and has all the same upgrades and powers as your own strongest variant.
- The powers of the champions are now your own to command. Mipha's Grace, Daruk's Protection, Urbosa's Fury, Revali's Gale and Link's Time Dilation are all abilities you now possess on the same level as said champions, and yes, the time dilation is an actual ability, not just a game mechanic. However, Daruk's Protection doesn't work against electricity and can be broken through, and Mipha's Grace still takes some time to cast.
- Hyrulean Hero: You have earned the loyalty, friendship and in some cases love, of so many people in this world, why should we leave you to on with just a pittance of that? At will you can summon an army of Hyrule's various races of light, from Hylians to Koroks and Kokiri, of all the eras you have visited. They are equipped to the peak of their respective armed forces capabilities, Hylian Knights standing with Goron Warriors, Zora Pikeman flanking Kokiri Bowman and Gerudo Skirmishers preparing to charge in after Rito bombing runs, Sheikah Shinobi preparing to go in with an army of Guardians. Just be careful, this is still a medieval army, Guardians or not.
- (NEW) Companions can import into Generic First/Virgin Jump/Gauntlet with 1000 C to use and a Origin of their choice. They will come along with you through the levels of the Jump/Gauntlet, obviously.
Once again she took her time to breath through after the rant, before smiling at you. "So yes, please do your best to be the very spirit of the hero, I will await the day you finish. Ah, another thing: The various actions you can perform and the detriments that are listed, they all apply to jumps after the jumps here in this world, only that you don't need to continue into another Zelda Jump, if there are any left." She explains and smirks a bit.
"Naturally I wouldn't mind having one or more Zeldas coming along with you, I heard it is fairly entertaining when the fate of my world isn't at stake. Hint Hint."

We understand that each customer’s needs are unique, which is why cctv York offers a range of services to suit a variety of needs and budgets. Our CCTV specialists offer everything from Ajax alarms, and Home IP network to Hikvision and Dahua CCTV Camera systems. Why Not install your self a Ajax home alarm? Installing an Ajax alarm system can be done by individuals who are comfortable with basic DIY (do-it-yourself) projects and have a good understanding of electrical systems and home security. However, it's important to note that installing a security system involves working with electrical wiring and potentially drilling holes in walls or ceilings, so if you're uncertain or uncomfortable with these tasks, it's advisable to hire a professional installer. If you decide to install an Ajax alarm system yourself, here are some general steps to consider: - Familiarize yourself with the system: Read the installation manual and understand the components included in the Ajax alarm system. This will give you a clear idea of the installation process and the necessary tools.
- Plan the installation: Determine the optimal locations for sensors, detectors, and the control panel. Consider factors such as coverage, accessibility, and wiring requirements. Make sure to choose strategic locations that cover vulnerable entry points in your home.
- Prepare the necessary tools: Gather the tools needed for the installation, such as a drill, screwdriver, cable clips, wire strippers, and a ladder.
- Install the control panel: Start by mounting the control panel in a central location, preferably near the main entrance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation and wiring.
- Install the sensors and detectors: Place doowindow sensors and motion detectors at designated locations according to your plan. Ensure they are securely mounted and aligned correctly. Run the necessary wiring or connect wireless components, depending on the system.
- Configure the system: Once all the components are installed, follow the instructions provided by Ajax to configure the system. This typically involves connecting the control panel to your home's Wi-Fi network and programming the system settings.
- Test the system: After installation and configuration, thoroughly test the system to ensure all components are functioning correctly. Activate each sensor and ensure that the control panel receives the appropriate signals.
Remember, Ajax alarm systems may have specific installation instructions and requirements, so it's crucial to consult the manufacturer's documentation and guidelines throughout the process. If at any point you encounter difficulties or feel unsure about the installation, it's advisable to consult a professional installer or contact the manufacturer's support for assistance. https://reddit.com/link/13ut6sv/video/ejicdxvkzs2b1/player https://aerialsandcctvsolutions.co.uk/cctv-installation/cctv-york/ submitted by KellyfromLeedsUK to cctvsecuritysystems [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 11:44 wictr Connecting multiple Keypads to Paradox SP6000+ Alarm
Hi peeps!
I'd like to connect a second keypad to my Paradox SP6000+ Alarm alarm control panel. Google hasn't been much help, and neither has the manual. has anybody done this before? Is it as easy as connecting it in parallel along with the first keypad?
Thanks!

2023.05.29 11:41 VexTrooper Terran Contact - Lassus Station - Part II
First Prev >>
Lassus System, Orbit of Lasu, Lassus Station, Early 2670 >Corporal Strider, Jace C. 4th ODR Battalion, Raptor Company, Squad Four Strider and the rest of Raptor Squad had found themselves in the central engineering chamber, as directed by the digital way-point set on their helmet's heads-up display.
The number of corpses had lessened, and they were free from those sights, at least for the moment, but were now presented with the engineering department of the station. If not for their built-in night vision, then their portion of the station would be pitch black.
Some of the doors they came across had to be torched and breached with smaller controlled explosions with the use of a thermite door breaching charge. By now, they had used their final charge on the door to the central power core room.
"Strider, radio in, we're turning on the station," ordered his sergeant.
"Copy," Strider replied, prepping his comms pack, "Command! This is Raptor 4-4! Do you copy?! We found the power core, booting up now!"
As one of the lower enlisted began the sequence, Strider heard over his radio to essentially abort, but the station had already run its sequence, and the lights in the room illuminated their visors, almost blinding them.
"Turn off your NVs!" ordered the sergeant.
With a press of a button, they manually turned off their enhanced night vision and were now met with fluorescent lighting, which felt almost dizzying to him and some of his compatriots.
"Always hated this light, to think they use it too," commented a nearby corporal, their name 'Castor' spelled out on his armor just above his mid-chest.
"You said it, shit gets on my nerves," Strider replied, "Couldn't they have used something more...natural?"
Strider was referring to the lights aboard TRSC vessels that used light in between incandescent and fluorescent. However, light usage was much more diversified on ships in the modern day and this went for many of the living areas aboard ships that used mostly warm light while hallways and office spaces used cool light.
"The TRSC still use the same light, man," the opposing corporal responded to Strider, "But I agree. It would be nice if we got better light."
As the two conversed, the squad received an ominous message that felt like it came from within their heads.
>>//I=4m+yOur=ph4nt0M?=y0uR_Sw0rd?
"What the hell was that?! It sounded like it was in my head." One of the raiders said. His transmission was filled with static, but was still clear compared to the message they had just received.
"Minerva, what was it?" came over the radio from the Admiral.
"Unknown. It did come, undoubtedly, from the station. I urge the raiders to expedite their process to the intelligence archives before whatever it was we woke up swarms them."
"You heard her boys! Get that intel, then we can blow that station into the planet," the Admiral said with haste and his squad responded with a resounding 'Aye Sir!'
With the systems now running, they were given a new way-point that led to a door opposite where they had entered. They tried to open it, but to no avail.
"Castor, breach it!" ordered their sergeant.
"Out of charges, gotta do it manually," he replied, bringing out a manual breach torch.
"Do it!" Castor nodded and began to work with another working the other half of the door.
The room was situated with only two entries, their original and another across from it. Situated in the center was the main core operating system in the heart of the station. There existed a series of pipes that extended from the core's computer, which they used for cover and supported aim.
"Minerva, do we have an idea of the hostile contact?" Strider called to the AI.
"They are mechanical in nature, presumably the automated workforce that inhabited the station. I would assume them to be extremely hostile..."
"Noted," he replied, reiterating the information to the squad. The squad's communications operator oversaw a direct line to higher command, but orders from an AI are usually disseminated to the squad simultaneously, but to ensure no confusion, a verbal reiteration was needed. This was mainly because personnel comms had a habit of not transmitting over a wider band.
As they aimed toward their last entrance, they noted small red dots on the bottom of their HUD. The distance set was 25 meters for the radius, revealing how close the enemy was.
From the entrance, it was a linear hallway that took a sharp left turn from their perspective and as the dot rounded a corner, they saw it.
It was a robot that looked similar in height to a Sellian but had lanky arms that dropped to his knee joint with what looked to be a captain's hat placed atop it at a crooked angle. It had a painted expression on its once black exterior in the form of eyes and a smile colored with dried Sellian blood. In its right hand, it held a pointed object that shined from the light above it and stood still.
They noticed on their mini-map that the dots ceased their movement with the revelation of the autonomous bot.
"I don't know what the fuck that thing is, but it ain't right," one of the raiders said, training his sight on the dome of the imitation.
Agreement sounded from those around him when a sharp mechanical screech sounded from the creature. It pointed its weapon at the squad and the dots that ceased now began to move, more rapidly and rounded the corner with a quick paste unlike before.
The robots that revealed themselves were similar to the one in the hat, and many had tools fashioned for combat that shared the same discoloration upon the one from before, dried green Sellian blood.
The squad then began firing into the crowd of advancing murder bots. They went down easy, but their HUD showed a steady stream flowing into the corridor. To conserve ammo, two of the Raiders maintained suppressive fire into the corridor with a belt-fed squad automatic weapon, the K-Tac M506 SAW.
"Castor! How long until that door is open?!" demanded the sergeant.
"Almost got it!" he said and with a thud, the melted portions fell back on themselves, "It's open!"
With their new access, raiders began filtering through to the next area, covering those in the rear with continuous fire as the robots consumed the hallway. Bodies of the hostiles filled most of the corridor, making it difficult for their traversal, subsequently making them stumble among their fallen comrades.
"Raptor," Minerva said, "I have managed to gain access to doors, but access to larger systems is still beyond my command. I have found a likely possibility for the source of the murderous automatons."
"Where to?" responded Strider as the group moved forward, taking down a straggler of the same robot they previously fired upon.
"I am detecting a large electrical signature, not native to the station and separate from the core within the station's central archive intelligence department. You will most likely find your culprit there."
"Much obliged," he said, informing his sergeant, "Got us a way-point? With the least resistance if possible."
Another door opened, and several shots rang out, this time against two larger robots in similar form to the smaller ones.
"They're starting to get big, Minerva!"
A Brief Silence followed before the way-point on their HUD was updated.
"Thanks!"
"Of Course, Corporal"
Raptor Squad proceeded on their new route, encountering less than before. They were consistently being followed, so to prevent them from catching up, Castor was responsible for the sealing of the doors, which he did by disabling the access panel beside the doors to prevent electrical or manual operation.
He and his partner quickly added a weld at key joints for the doors before leaving to meet with the rest of the group.
"Raptor Squad," Minerva spoke out, "You are close to the intelligence archives. I am detecting multiple signatures in the chamber. Exercise caution."
"Roger," said the sergeant, "Let's go, Raptors! Double time!"
Strider followed in the center of the group as they made their way to the archive room. From what he could recall, most of the enemy was behind them being held back by the shoddily welded doors, but they soon began to hear loud banging that echoed throughout the halls.
Noticing the implication, they followed their route with haste, taking down several small lone robots as seen before. Occasionally, they would encounter a larger cluster, but a well-placed grenade made short work of the enemy.
As the point man rounded a corner, a shot rang out, landing its mark on his chest. A short yell was sounded, and the Raider fell on his back, now motionless.
"Dammit! They hit Ollie!" shouted the raider closest to him as he raised his left fist at a ninety-degree angle signifying the rest of the group to halt, "Ollie! You hear me!?"
Silence followed, raising the Raider's temperament to a higher level.
"Strider!" called the Sergeant, "Do we have air support yet? We'll need it when we get out of here!"
"Wait one!" replied Strider as shots from the Raiders now began their exchange with an enemy just down the hall, "Command! Raptor! How are we on air support!?"
"Troop transport is inbound and circling. Fighter support is available when you are clear with the intel."
"Copy!" he turned to the Sergeant, "We got it, but we need the intel first before they can support us!"
He nodded and gave orders to the idle Raiders.
"Split up, fire team alpha; stay here and prepare for a push. Fire team bravo, take the flank. There's a maintenance tunnel that runs on the sides that run along the side of the interior. That'll be your entry point! Go now!"
Raptors eight through twelve did as ordered and went back the way they came before taking a left. Several shots rang out, but Strider noticed all five were still together on his mini-map before ultimately traveling beyond his sensors.
"Allow me to assists," Minerva added, "I have managed to manipulate surface-level sensors. Your advance should be masked from the enemy for the moment, but it won't be long before they regain control of their systems."
"Understood," Strider relayed the new information, and the Raiders began their assault into the room.
After exchanging shots, another Raider was successful in bringing to cover, Ollie, and began field triage. He took a shot of a kinetic round that embedded itself mid-way through the up-armored chest plate. The round was moderately large, and the corpsman took out a medical device that could take a close - up x-ray scan of the patient, adding to his diagnostic.
As he did so, he returned to the sergeant with his analysis.
"Took a large kinetic round to his upper chest, he has a pulse, but it's weak. Hit him hard enough to knock him out..."
He pulled the bullet out, and it was mushroomed with a thin central canal within the mushroomed pattern. He shook his head and began treating the downed patient, "an Armor-Piercing round, steel core got lodged in his scapula. He has to get off this station!"
The sergeant, who stayed with fire team alpha, furrowed his eyes in frustration, "Strider, get a med evac. We've got a casualty. Hi-Pri!"
He nodded in response and updated command on their request. It was met with affirmation, but he was issued to first complete their initial objective.
"You have your orders. Secure the intel first and you’ll have your ride."
Strider tried to negotiate with a more expedition evac, but he was met with the same response.
"Sergeant! Intel comes first, then we get our evac..."
"Dammit!" he replied, anger infused with every pronunciation, "Bravo!? you ready?!"
A call of affirmation came through the comms and the assault was a go.
"Move it, Alpha!"
The point man swapped with a man behind him that wielded a squad automatic weapon and let pass a wall of lead that mangled and tore any within direct site of the hallway. Similarly, from within the chamber, a controlled explosion erupted from the right wall that threw shrapnel into the nearby automatons.
They deftly exited their abrupt entrance and sent well-placed shots into the barely working droids. Those that survived were scattered behind cover in the corners of the room and after the initial assault. They left their cover and tried to fire into their enemy but were met with perfectly executed return fire that promptly ended them, ensuring Terran control.
"Clear!"
"All Clear!"
"Clear here!"
Responses were sounded from the Raiders as they swept the room from door to door.
"Secure those hatches and prepare to extract the data. Strider, that's you!"
The other Raiders secured their entrances and began marking them with large amounts of X4 explosive, while Strider began diving into the Sellian computer systems. By fastening similar cables to a modified cabal adapter, he was successful in creating a link to properly communicate with their systems from his personal data pad.
The cable used was a newly fashioned universal cable designed to integrate seamlessly into their systems shortly after integration from Chief Commander Yorla's fleet. Granted, it was done without their knowledge.
With an update headed by Minerva herself, he was able to read, translate and download all data from the central archives' computer.
As he was nearing completion, he was notified of a presence behind him. It was his Sergeant.
"How's it coming along?"
"Steady. We're gathering a lot, but at this rate, those bots will be on us in no time..."
The Sergeant returned to his post and let Strider continue his work. In terms of tech literacy, Strider was competent in what he needed to do, and this task was no different.
"68...71...73..." he whispered to himself as he monitored the download status, "Lookin' good..."
As the status percentage reached '92%', it stalled, for an unusual amount of time...
"What the hell..." he said to himself again, this time re-checking the hard connection he adapted, questioning whether he applied them correctly. When is minor investigation yielded no further results, the screen morphed into a series of unknown symbols and a display that resembled a frozen screen that had glitched itself into a dreaded blue error screen.
[>>C3ase_y0uR_atk!!=_1nVad3r.!..?_/...??????h????el???p?????]
"Minerva!" he called out, "We got an issue!"
He connected a second display to the first, and it worked as a back-up troubleshooting display.
"I am aware, Corporal. I have preloaded your data pad with a countermeasure."
"What kind of countermeasure?" he reiterated.
"A digital combat malware for our guest. I do apologize for the previous device," she said as Strider looked to the first pad in question. It was visually smoking from overheating components. By rerouting the remaining data to the second pad, he was able to finish the download and recovered the data from the first by extracting a removable drive. He plugged in the external drive and found that with the previous 92% and the remaining 8% downloaded onto the second, their mission with a success.
"Thanks, get us the quickest route out of here, we have wounded," he said, packing his device into a secure pouch.
As he got up, pounding was heard from their initial entrance and shots were now heard from their improvised entrance.
"Bogies in the maintenance tunnels! Frag 'em!" ordered one Raider that led the Bravo fire team that let loose a grenade followed by a couple more. The shock wave of the explosion was felt at the center console as Strider readied his rifle.
He checked his magazines and saw he was still sufficient with ammo, unlike some of his brothers.
As the fighting intensified, the doors were cracked open, letting through only a couple of bots at a time. His squad fired into the enemy that broke through, as well as firing into the newly made crevice by the automated enemy.
"I thought we took what was controlling them!" stated one Raider as he threw a grenade into the cracked entrance, hitting a peeking bot before blowing it and others around it into nothing, "Shouldn't they be shut down!?"
Strider felt the same way. Their data collection was anti-climactic, and the supposed tussle with the enemy program lasted for less than only a minute.
Before he could wonder any more about the subject, an update was issued on their HUD, leading to the poorly manned door they left to only one other Raider.
"The route you need for extraction is through those doors. Continued straight until told otherwise."
Strider acknowledged, as did his Sergeant, and he began routing troops to their extract. The indicators on their mini-maps proved that they had sparse enemy combatants, at least those that moved, and they opened the door. They fired their shots into the clueless bots that barely had time to direct their attention to their invaders before being dispatched.
As Minerva said, they continued straight until a new way-point was displayed to change their route. Now, with their casualty base growing little by little, their overall speed had slowed. Some limped as they received rounds to their legs in the soft armor of their under suit from enemy AP rounds.
"This ain't looking good, Minerva," Strider stated as he glided as the pace of the wounded, "How much further?"
"Not much longer, Corporal. I will advise, however, to seal any suit punctures with a temporary vacuum seal component."
"Noted," he replied curtly as they entered a final door.
Past the door, they were met with the blackness of the void, but now the sun illuminated the space, revealing the same gruesome scenes of violently expired Sellians.
A way-point led to their next entrance, which led to the thin array of the port docking tubes reserved for the larger ships. From where they stood, a ship was seen docked at the end of their tube.
It was a sleek looking ship that had a wide cross-section, but its profile was slim. It was a large-sized ship that could be manned by a singular pilot or manned by a crew of six.
The ship itself was a Galaxy-Class Cutter that was outfitted with a series of medical bays that each offered spots for varying degrees of injuries sustained. It had its own series of weapons for self-defense but served well within areas of operation where they had air superiority.
Strider then turned to the group and told them of their vacuum seal component and to check all for punctures in their suits.
It was a spray that was applied to the external portions of their under suit and created a temporary seal from space, and served as a crucial tool in any space-farer's box.
As they entered the docking tube, a call from a Raider in the rear notified the group of a mass of bots emerging from the sides of the station along the main roads.
"Move!" Ordered their Sergeant.
Already fatigued and gasping for air, the Raiders complied and pushed themselves beyond, especially now with their extraction so close.
The Raiders covered the rear as they descended further into the tube, and the bodies of automated bots that littered the entrance began to clog it.
Those that made their way closer to their exit provided cover for those in the rear, as some of the enemy would make it past the debris and charge their position. Very few carried fire arms and now there were mostly droids with shoddily made melee weapons that attempted to charge, each meeting the same fate.
They secured the entrance and the wounded were filed in followed by the main body, then the rear guard. Strider and Castor were now the last in the squad to secure the rear when they were met with a singular bot that stood not far from their position.
"What the hell..." Castor sounded out.
It was the same bot that wore a bloodied captain's hat with a face painted on its exterior from the blood of Sellians. It was unarmed, which caught both Raiders off guard. As Castor and Strider raised their weapons to shoot, it raised its hands in a motion of surrender as it moved slowly towards them.
"Get the FUCK back!" Commanded Castor to no avail. He fired a shot into its waist strut, causing it to collapse on its backside.
Strider was about to deliver the final blow when it pulled an item from behind its head. It was cylindrical with a silver tube that matched the size of its small metal hands with a red button at the top.
Sudden realization hit and both Strider and Castor fired into the bot but in the split second of their pull of the trigger, a flash of light erupted from the robot, engulfing the tube in a concussive blast that tore it from its structure, hurdling Castor and Strider around in the tube and eventually, into space.
Strider soon regain consciousness but woke to the cries of his squad mate, Castor, and to the gun fire of the slowly retreating cutter ship. Large objects flew around it that fired down on the ship. The fighter escorts were now firing at the new enemy, and soon their silhouettes vanished beyond the void.
"G-get the fuck back!"
Strider struggled to orient himself as his suit was not equipped for EVA, but eventually traced a line of silver and gray that reflected the sun to the cry in question.
He noticed sparks of light near the tip of an ever extending spire towards the way-point of his comrade.
Again, cries of desperation filled his comms as he activated his helmet's zoom-in function toward Castor. From his distance, he was able to make out his figure as well as those extending towards him.
"Get off me, you bastards!!"
Several flashes of light followed, and the destruction of a nearby robot shattered away into the void in all directions.
The spire consisted of the murderous bots attaching to one another towards their prey like a fungus. He called for emergency pick-up and tried to get Castor's attention when he felt a pressure on his ankle.
When he looked down, he was met with a similarly painted face as the droid that blew up their tunnel, with a dried green wastefully painted on its facial exterior.
Fear grabbed him, and Strider by instinct reached for his handgun and fired several shots into the face of the bot.
He looked at Castor, and they had grasped him in their metal claws and began tearing away at his armor as he screamed.
"G-get the FUCK...OFF ME!" He thrashed at the enemy.
His weapons drifted from their sling with spent magazines that orbited with him as he used every bit of his tool set to waste on the enemy. He fired into them with his pistol, and after it was empty, he readily switched to a knife that was situated on his lower back. The debris of the robot menace grew, but so did their advance.
Strider turned to his own group now and fired well-placed shots into the oncoming horde. Their advance was quick and unexpected and gave both little room to breathe.
No more than several minutes had passed, and help still had not come. He grew anxious, and this was helped by his increasingly fatigued comrade.
Soon, his savage thrashing had come to an end and the horde he had kept away quickly overtook him when a call came through to Strider.
"I can't do this, Jace..."
"I'm sure help is on it's way. Just, hang on!" Strider fired into several more droids before reloading and turned his attention back to Castor, who was now swarmed with automated menace.
"I ain't going out by the hands of some bots..."
"Wait-"
Before Strider could start his sentence, a flash of light took the place of Castor and all mater of materials scattered into the void, striking Strider and his own bots just moments after the explosion. A piece found its way onto his helmet, that jolted him with a headache. He quickly applied the last of his vacuum seal to the areas likely hit before throwing the empty canister at the encroaching enemy.
He fired some more rounds into the growing crowd, as well as some unused grenades, saving one for himself.
"C'mon you bastards! What?! You afraid to die?" Strider pulled his knife and kept the grenade in his offhand.
He motioned for them to approach with an antagonizing gesture, "Let's tango, you soulless abominations!"
They advanced to his provocation and he fought.
Instead of letting them have the pleasure of holding him, he decided to wrangle them first, using their mechanical bodies for leverage as he swiped, stabbed, punctured and yanked as loose cables, all in an effort to take as many he can, hoping for help to arrive.
Seconds that felt like minutes had passed and Strider was fatigued. His breathing was haggard and it felt heavy. He thought to himself the amount of time he spent in vacuum these last several moments and deemed that he must be reaching his max operating time. He was granted thirty minutes, but with his fight for survival, he greatly reduced it to several minutes. It was only a matter of time.
His eyes grew heavy, and his vision began to blur.
'Huh, so this is how I die? Real damn shame...' he thought to himself.
As his eyes closed, he let it take him and released himself to an eternal slumber, letting go of a primed grenade that drifted towards a fated enemy.

2023.05.29 08:43 Eason_sjhm What is the best casting method for aluminium?
To open a shaped aluminum mold, you will typically follow these steps:
- Inspection: Examine the mold for any visible damage or signs of wear. Ensure that it is safe to handle and there are no obstructions that could impede the opening process.
- Lubrication: Apply a suitable lubricant to the mold's moving parts, such as hinges or slides, to facilitate smooth movement during the opening process.
- Clamping or securing: If the mold is attached to a clamping mechanism or secured in place, release or remove the clamps to free the mold from its fixed position.
- Alignment: Check the alignment of the mold components to ensure they are properly aligned for opening. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment.
- Opening mechanism: Determine the specific opening mechanism used for your mold. Common methods include manual operation or the use of hydraulic or mechanical systems.
- Manual operation: If the mold is designed for manual opening, locate any handles, levers, or other mechanisms provided for this purpose. Follow the instructions provided by the mold manufacturer to open it safely. Apply steady and controlled force as needed to separate the mold halves.
- Hydraulic or mechanical systems: If your mold incorporates hydraulic or mechanical systems for opening, locate the control panel or mechanism responsible for activating the opening process. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer or consult with an expert familiar with the specific system to operate it correctly.
- Opening process: Engage the opening mechanism according to the chosen method. This may involve operating handles, activating buttons or switches, or triggering hydraulic or mechanical systems. Apply force gradually and monitor the mold's movement carefully to ensure a smooth and controlled opening.
- Safety precautions: Always prioritize safety when opening molds. Be aware of potential hazards, such as sharp edges or protruding components, and take necessary precautions, such as wearing protective gloves or using tools designed for the task.
- Remember to refer to the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines specific to your mold to ensure proper handling and safety protocols. If you are uncertain or unfamiliar with the opening process, consult with an expert or a mold technician for assistance.

- What are the best air coolers for the T1-R?
- What are the best AIOs for the T1-SW?
- NOTE: All AIOs, unless otherwise noted, will fit in all slot spacing modes.
- Software controlled (this means the AIOs have liquid temp sensors, allowing you to control the fans based on liquid temp, but they have more cables to manage)
- Corsair H100i Pro XT
- NZXT X53 (the CPU block is 55mm tall, so it will only work in 2.75 slot and less)
- NZXT Z53 (the CPU block is 52mm tall, so it will only fit in 3 slot mode and less)
- No software (fans are plugged into the motherboard and managed in the BIOS, but the AIOs have fewer cables to manage)
- Phanteks Glacier One 240 MP / MPH / T30 v2 (Very important that if you go with the T30 version, you get the Gen 2 version, as the original version has a thicker radiator that will not fit.)
- Corsair H100x RGB Elite (Cannot find any data on the height of the CPU block, may or may not fit in all slot sizes. However, it does look similar to the H100i RGB Elite, and if it is the same, then it will only fit in 2.75 slot mode.)
- Fractal Design Lumen S24 v2
- Fans for AIOs (all AIOs in the T1 will need one slim 15mm fan in order to fit in the case. we also suggest changing out the second fan for better noise and performance)
- Slim fan: Noctua NF-A12x15 (Slim fans also need different screws to mount to the radiator. you can either cut the screws that came with your AIO to length, or can buy 6/32 thread 7/8" long screws)
- Full size fan: Noctua NF-A12x25 or Phanteks T30
- What custom cable lengths do I need for the T1?
- Sandwich layout (Standard PSU mount)
- 24 pin - 140-160mm
- EPS - 250-260mm
- 12vhpwr (or if you have a GPU with power connectors close to the middle of the card) - 325-350mm
- PCIe 8 pin (or if you have a GPU with power connectors close to the end of the card) - 200-220mm
- Sandwich (Alternative 90° PSU mount)
- 24 pin - 160mm
- EPS - 300mm
- 12vhpwr - 180mm
- Reference layout
- Ncase M1 lengths work fine
- What is the difference between the Standard PSU mount and the Alternative 90° PSU mount?
- The standard PSU mount has the PSU bracket connected to the top strut and the cables exiting towards the radiator area of the case. The alternative 90° PSU mount attaches the PSU bracket to the front panel and in the process consumes the dedicated 2.5" drive mount. There is no difference in performance, but the required lengths for custom cables do change. The choice is mainly aesthetic, although the alternative 90° PSU mount is required for Deep-ITX motherboards.
- What is the difference between the Sandwich and Reference layouts?
- Sandwich is like what it sounds, it is a sandwich style case, where the GPU is installed behind the motherboard, and connected via a riser cable. This is like the original T1, and is best for most people, and also has the best compatibility for GPUs.
- Reference is a layout that is akin to ATX cases, where the GPU slots directly into the motherboard at a 90 degree angle, instead of being relocated to a different part of the case and connected with a riser. This layout is similar to the Ncase M1. This layout has the best compatibility for tall air coolers, like the C14s from Noctua, but greatly sacrifices GPU compatibility, and is mainly for blower-style cards or the Nvidia 30 series FE cards, however there are other GPUs that can fit. Check the spec sheet pinned in the #formd channel to see if your GPU will fit.
- What is the difference between Steel and Aluminum mesh side panels?
- Aluminum Mesh Panels are thicker, feel more premium, and are more challenging to manufacture. However, it is not worth the extra cost for everyone. For reference, most audio speakers use steel mesh, and most people are ok with the fit and finish.
- Aluminum Mesh Panels are uncommon due to cost reasons. It is even rare in high-end audio due to the high manufacturing cost and complexity. It is a novelty for the people who want it and can afford it.
- BOTH the Aluminum Mesh and Steel Mesh are near-identical for cooling and dust filtering. The holes are within 0.1 mm of each other. There is no visual difference in density unless you look for it.
- Comparison pic here
- What stand-offs should I use to connect the riser bracket to the side strut?
- The formula is (slot selection -1) * 20mm = amount of stand-off you need. So for a 2 slot card it's 20mm, 2.5 slot uses 30mm, and 3 slot uses 40mm.
- What is the best layout for the Reference case in terms of thermals and noise?

2023.05.29 02:56 Ornery-Resolution786 Viking hot tub error code 63
Suddenly, my 9yo 8x8 220v Tradition Viking spa threw a code "63" and pump 1 stopped working (it has 2 speeds). I Googled it and found nothing. Nothing in manual either. I reset the control panel and same code. Also has code 23 and 24, but those have been popping up and pumps 1 and 2 worked with no problem. Any idea what the 63 is or how to get pump 1 back running? Was running fine. TIA.

2023.05.29 01:40 Expert_Sentence_6574 Adding trailer brake controller?
Hey all,
I’ve got a 2020 1500 Rebel and want to add a trailer brake controller. In my rear bumper, there are plugs for a 4 pin and 9 pin connector. From what I’ve found out so far, the wiring harness is 99.999% likely to be there, apparently it’s a cost saving measure to have only one type of wire loom and just use connectors as needed per trim level. And, it also seems that if I buy the OEM trailer brake switch/controller, aside from having to pull the center display to be able to add the controller switch to the dashboard, the controller is basically a “plug and play” device.
My questions are:
1) can it possibly really potentially be this easy? 2) what are the chances that the wires and plugs are actually wrapped up behind the dash? 3) is there a way, short of opening up the dash, to confirm that the wiring is actually in there? ie the dealer looking up the VIN… 4) if ANY of this is true in some shape or form, has anyone successfully completed this job?
The wife and I are looking at using the Ram to pull a camper and in my state I need a trailer brake controller and would prefer to have a clean install with an OEM component & look as opposed to some aftermarket device screwed into the knee panels under the steering wheel.
As a disclaimer, I’m a Firefighter and Paramedic by trade and a “shade tree mechanic” since I was a kid. I started with my pop, building hot rods/muscle cars and as an adult I’ve built up and modified a few Jeep Wranglers that I took off road and wheeled hard on weekends and repaired and rebuilt as needed to wheel the next weekend. I only got rid of my last Jeep because a woman driving a school bus “didn’t see” me and t-boned me, essentially bending the Jeep into a nice curved shape.
So if this is as simple as removing the center console and part of the dash (I’ve already watched some videos and read thru the shop manual instructions for console & dash removal) I’m comfortable doing the work, and have the necessary tools.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

2023.05.28 18:02 d00mt0mb Comparison of SSD Manufacturer Software for managing SSDs and updating firmware
Having a really tough time selecting a PCIe gen4 SSD for my upgrade. The myriad of makers and specs, DRAM or DRAMless, TLC or QLC, speeds, etc is overwhelming. In addition to warranty and TBW, a decent SSD I would be happy with in my system should have a good software manager for their SSDs. Since relying on Windows or nothing to manage the SSD is not ideal.
I'm trying to make a list of each manufacturer's SSD software "toolkit" and common expected features.
"Must-have"
- Drive Info / Health dashboard
- Diagnostic Scan
- Performance Benchmark
- Firmware Updater
"Nice to have"
- Performance optimization (Windows/power modes of the drive)
- Cloning / Data migration
- Over-provisioning
- TRIM Status (I assume this enabled by default in Windows anyway)
- S.M.A.R.T. readout
The key differentiator for me has been the built-in firmware updater (non-exhaustive list)
- ADATA - SSD Toolbox, built-in firmware updater: YES
- Corsair - SSD Toolbox, built-in firmware updater: YES
- Crucial - Storage Executive, built-in firmware updater: YES
- Gigabyte - Control Center, built-in firmware updater: UNKNOWN
- Kingston - SSD Manager, built-in firmware updater: YES
- MSI - MSI Center, built-in firmware updater: UNKNOWN
- Patriot - SSD Toolbox, built-in firmware updater: UNKNOWN
- PNY - PCIe or SATA SSD Toolbox and Firmware updater: YES
- Sabrent - Rocket Control Panel, built-in firmware updater: YES
- Samsung - Magician software, built-in firmware updater: YES
- Seagate - Seatools SSD Toolbox, built-in firmware updater: YES
- TeamGroup - S.M.A.R.T. tool, built-in firmware updater: UKNOWN
- Individual drive series firmware update tools: MP34, T-Force Z340
- Solidigm - Synergy Toolkit, built-in firmware updater: YES
- Western Digital - WD SSD Dashboard, built-in firmware updater: YES
Need help filling in unknown status, most of these could find a software tool provided, but can't confirm whether it is "built-in" or not. i.e. not downloading installing a separate tool or manual updates.

2023.05.28 15:20 _Master_CJ_ Removing Parrot OS & Re-Installing Ubuntu - Daily Driver For Working & Gaming
As the title says I am removing my Parrot OS as I don't use it as much as I used to. If anything I have gone back to using the most common method of using a VM (Virtual Machine), whether that is using Kali Linux or Parrot OS. The other part being that I am re-installing Ubuntu which I have been using a lot more recently. So I decided to remove Parrot OS and re-install Ubuntu which I have been using for a while now (well since my last post basically -
after installing Ubuntu) but not consistently. I am aware that there are many other posts like this one, but as a person who likes to do thigs properly and some what by the books I want to make sure I get this right so I don't have to mess with it again.
Question 1
- My first question is more for my curiosity but, should I install the "Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS" or the "Ubuntu 23.04"?
- Since I'm basically a beginner and plan to use Ubuntu more often like a daily drivemain OS which is for both work and possibly gaming, which version would you suggest for me to use?
Question 2
- This second question is more about setting Ubuntu up, Should I just let Ubuntu automatically partition the drives how it wants to, or is it better to manually partition the drives my self?
- The reason I'm asking this is because I'm going to give Ubuntu the full 500GB, but I want to make sure that it is partitioned/setup correctly. Obviously there are many different ways in which people have setup their manual partitions, but I was wondering if there is a more official way of doing it.
Here are my PC specs for anyone who wants to know:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7
RAM: 32GB, 3600MHZ, 2 X 16
Motherboard: MSI
GPU: GeForce RTX 30 Series
Here is an example below of what I have found:
- ROOT
- Size: 30000MB, Type: Primary, Location: Beginning of Space, Use: Ext4 journaling file system, Mount: /
- SWAP - Changed size compared to the YouTube video
- Size: 64000MB, Type: Primary, Location: Beginning of Space, Use: Swap area
- HOME
- Size: Rest of the Drive, Type: Logical, Location: Beginning of Space, Use: Ext4 journaling file system, Mount: /home
Source (URL at current time):
https://youtu.be/A3au3qrNf9A?t=148
Question 3
- My final question is more about graphics, colour settings and gaming. As I already know that it is possible to play steam games on Ubuntu with the off few changes, I was wondering if there is a way in which the output display can have its saturation increased?
- The reason I'm asking this is because I have already set my saturation high on my Windows 10 through the GeForce Control Panel, but I cant seem to find a way to do it on Ubuntu.
Hopefully I'm able to get some help and thank you for taking the time to read and help me even if the solution or methods doesn't work.

2023.05.28 07:40 hammy0w0 Bad quality audio in DOOM Eternal with Bluetooth headphones fix
I have had some issues with my HD450SE Bluetooth headphones and DOOM Eternal since I got it. I got fed up with it and decided to fix it. I found several posts about it but one have fixed it for me, see
example. I went through several painful posts before I found
this one which worked. Though you do have to manually type in "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers" into control panel as if you click the button you'll open a new windows 11 GUI which is more confusing.
Figured that I'd share my fix as I bet there are some people out there that have this issue aswell.

2023.05.28 06:40 SpaceDemon3o5z I don't even care about OMD, but undoing it would lead to some really fun comic stories
“Undo OMD” is basically a chant around here. Personally, my favorite story came way later, and I don’t really care about bringing the marriage back (Renew Your Vows is very good. I’m happy either way. Just pick a lane). That being said, Mephisto has now made deals with three spider-men, and the fallout of those deals being undone, all at once, could lead to some excellent comic shenanigans.
- Undoing Pete’rs deal would lead to two realities constantly trying to overlap each other. Villains that we’ve never met in the main 616 blink in and out of existence. A girl comes home claiming to be Peter and MJ’s daughter, and then in the next panel is gone. I know Renew Your Vows is technically the universe they’d be overlapping with, but for the sake of fun, I suggest we make it a single universe trying to reconcile two versions of itself, rather than a multiverse story. This way we get a version of events that may be totally foreign.
- Undoing Mile’s deal could actually have relevance to current events with Kamala dying. Does her death nullify what Mephisto did? I know that wasn’t framed as a “deal” but I think it should count. The result should be similar to what Peter’s dealing with. Reality trying to pick a version of itself. Or maybe Miles has to struggle to stay in 616 as the universe starts to outright reject him? (I know there’s some ultimate universe event coming up, but this is all hypothetical)
- Otto’s deal could be the simplest. I’m thinking a limited series following Otto as someone seems to be closing in on him covertly, messing with his criminal operations. Eventually, we reveal this person to be Elliot Tolliver. If we want to add another layer to it, maybe because of the body-snatching nature of his story, Otto’s been having blackouts, and he and Elliot have been switching out control of their body.
Just a random thought I had recently. It feels like Marvel has unintentionally set up what could actually be a cool spider focused event. No idea what the resolution would be, but the setup sounds like wacky fun. And it's an event that could pull in multiple spider-folks and doesn't necessarily have to be a multiverse story.

2023.05.28 05:36 distalis Emulate Pool Remote
I am looking for signal captures of Jandy Aqualink pool remote. According to the manual, it should be operating in a sub-ghz range(around 900 mhz).
https://www.jandy.com/en/products/controls/system-components/interfaces/aqualink-wireless-remote There is no evil plot or prank intent. Whenever the power goes out, our pool lights go out of whack and stay on. We then need to wait for 1-2 weeks until the pool company comes for a scheduled visit. I just need a way to turn the lights off and to turn the pump on and off. I can already do those things directly from the box, but it's inconvenient.
If anyone came across signal captures, please post them here. I'm sure others could benefit as well. Thank you!

2023.05.28 01:04 QuasiAutomotive My Mk7 GTI mod list
Current as of June 2023
The subject is a 2017 GTI SE DSG with roughly 35k miles, one owner (me). The goal is aesthetics and comfort with a little bit of performance. But I also like buying nice things and working on the car so sometimes that goes out the window. And yes, I realize that some of these aren't technically "mods" per-say but I assume to list everything anyway.
Feel free to reach out and ask me any questions about what/why/how or if you want pics and it's not already in my profile. I'll include links whenever possible.
Performance/Exhaust/Air
I wrote a review on the above two items that includes terrible sound clips.
Suspension
Wheels, Tires, and Brakes
I also reviewed the brakes. Interior
Exterior
LEDs from deAutoLED
Future Plans/Experiments/Maybes
- EQT coilovers. Sitting in the garage waiting for me along with a pair of 034 Roll Camber Optimizers and all the hardware you could ever want. Might do a deadset subframe kit and new control arms... we'll see after I install the coilovers.
- BFI Stage 1 engine and transmission mounts. Also sitting in the garage waiting for me.
- Unitronic intercooler. Also also sitting in the garage waiting for me.
- Tint since I live in a state where I can get away with it now. 35% total all around.
- Gotta do brake fluid and the DSG service. I now have a garage and a level surface to do work.
- A Rennwagen rear diffuser. The adhesive on the Golf R side skirts failed in a heatwave so I uninstalled those. I'll be re-installing the OEM ones paired with Dutch Parts Co. side skirts and the Rennwagen diffuser will keep a similar aesthetic.
- I have a Engine Beautification Project in mind. I'm thinking a nice fastener kit and some nice battery terminal connectors. Maybe quick release ones. I'll also find nice oil and DSG filter housings. I can't decide between the Euro intake manifold cover or the updated one-piece engine/manifold cover (not the catch on fire one, a different one). I also found a guy who paints hood insulation so I'm thinking of getting that done in Clark plaid because I love silly ideas.

2023.05.28 01:00 The_Patriot Starjump Politics
Starjump Politics
1.
It’s a simple thing really. Or at least it used to be. Or at least, he thinks it used to be. Was there not a time - oh so far back along the arc - when the captain of a ship simply issued commands, and the crew simply obeyed? Or is that a legend passed down from one captain to the next, father to son, generation after generation?
Capt. Omen had certainly issued the command. Starjump. He’d had the navigators work the arcane magic that was their source of cred, both physically and emotionally, and the numbers had been delivered over the ether to the little screen at his wrist. This place to that. Here to there. From Y to Z. Math. Cash on Delivery.
The creds had flowed into the Navigators account, the product had been created, received by Command Executive (no less the captain himself), and the order had gone down to Engineering. Down, down, down. So far down, no one in Command or Engineering had any idea how far away (in relative spatial terms) the Engineer was at any given moment. But down, for certain.
Down and splat. The Great Master Engineer Belaster had balked.
Rather than simply obeying. It’s a simple thing really. Or at least it used to be.
Capt. Omen knew there would be an Increase. There was always an Increase.
What was his father's favorite old saying, passed from His Father Before Him and so on back to
The Time When Someone Knew What The Hell He Was Doing? Ah, he remembered.
“Fuck Engineering.”
2.
Belaster passed through the unbelievable door. Junior Engineers buzzed about the area, doing nothing, but looking busy - so long as he was within earshot. When the tons of dense metal swung back behind him with a harsh
cha-whump, he knew they would be back to the standard activities of drinking and gambling. Not a problem.
Starjump - now that’s a problem.
The great ship only made two jumps a year. That was the routine since long before he’d arisen to the post of Great Master. What was the Commander up to? Leave the loop? What business could be scraped up in that endeavor?
The Master Engineer strode silently through the gantried, claustrophobic mass of the Outer Engine. As he turned over the Captain's orders in his mind, he passed the old and mammoth machines that marked the mantle of his world. It took the same amount of time it would have taken to drink a flagon of decent wine for him to make it to the entrance to the Inner Engine. And by the time he pulled the key from his jerkin, he was beginning to form some ideas of his own about the opportunities that might be waiting in the proposed “endeavor”.
Two of the most trusted acolytes - Apprentice Engineers by their proper title - stood guarding the door to the Inner Engine Room. Until Belaster died, this foyer was as close to the heart of the great ship as they - or any other living thing - would come to the True Engine. As he slipped the key, along with his great fist, into the gaping maw of the Security Fissure, the two junior men obediently turned their backs and knelt into compliant unknowing.
The designation “room” was a misnomer. The space was a vast and oppressive orb, full of tubes, wires, lights, switches, monitors, and every other sort of mechanical contrivance the Builders of Yon could imagine. Machines upon machines in a dizzying layered continent of motorized confusion.
And not one piece of it had worked in living memory. Perhaps ten living memories.
Engineer Belaster worked his way quietly and humbly along a causeway on his right. In about half the time it had taken him to make it from the Outer Engine to the Inner, he came upon a square panel half his size and width. He stopped aside this nondescript feature in the wall. He looked left. He turned slowly, and peered back the way he had come. He turned back with his body facing the way he had originally paced the walk. Formality. Custom.
There was no lock. He simply placed his right hand on the wall, and leaned, ever so slightly. The panel pivoted on an unseen hinge, and with a slight crouch, and one great sidestep, Belaster entered the real engine of the ship. The Sepulchre of the Great Innovation.
Altering the regimen the GI was accustomed to...had this been done in his father’s time? His father’s father? Had it
ever been done? Had the GI ever varied from the formula he knew? What consequences might arise from making the changes necessary to achieve the Captain’s little side trip?
Capt. Omen had no idea the Great Innovation existed. Like every other soul upon the ship, he had no reason NOT to believe that the great engines were anything other than what their names proclaimed them to be. Capt. Omen had no idea that the cyclic journey of his craft was anything more than navigator math and brute engineering muscle.
Capt. Omen had other concerns, motives and compelling factors. Belaster had his own set of same, a compliment to his high station, political power, and terrible secret knowledge. And now, this side trip. Completely unprecedented. Unnecessary. Inconvenient. Maybe...profitable.
He had a headache. As he moved, slowly and respectfully to the Sepulchre of the Great Innovation, he heard his father’s ghostly voice speaking somewhere in the back of his mind, a raspy whisper on troubled winds, anointed and annoyed:
“Fuck the Command Executive.”
3.
The GI was a man. He was, in fact, the same genus and species as Belaster, or Omen, or any of the other humans on the ship. He was the oldest of his species by a profoundly long shot. The GI was over fifty thousand years old, if you went by base-metric. And still, he was 27. He’d been 27 for an extremely long time.
The GI was a real “G.I.” He had been an infantryman on the Homeworld, so many ages past. He’d fought in a land war in a place called “Babylon” around the end of the second millennium, early antiquity.
An injury, caused (believe it or not) by the shrapnel created by a combustion weapon buried in the primordial sand, had severed just enough of the GI’s nerve column to render him the perfect candidate for a singularly diabolical experiment of the type so popular with the barbarians of the age.
He had the right number of family members: 0. He had the right number of very close friends: 0.
He was well within the span of ideal years. He was, before the injury, a picture of the ideal “healthy young man”. No one would miss him if his body evaporated from the healing center, no computer would resist the removal of his identifying numbers from their primitive record keeping systems.
Said diabolical experiment was on the nature of semi autonomous interface and control processing. The scientists of his age were making early, brave, crude attempts at man/machine interface. Could the GI process data in his semi-responsive cranium? Could he be augmented to the point where he could move simple input/output switches with that brain? And lastly, but oh-so-most importantly, could he be kept in a physio-chemical stasis field efficient enough to keep him “alive” long enough to be useful?
The primeval researchers considered their experiment a semi-success. Yes, the stasis pod they had been working on for so many years functioned optimally. They considered their efforts in man machine interface development to be inconclusive. They were horribly, terribly wrong on that point. They simply didn’t have the technology to know it yet.
As the years passed, and other technology developed astride, the GI was demoted (with pathetic regularity) from “less interesting” to “obsolete” to “inconvenient”. When an enterprising pirate removed the GI’s pod from a long-dormant storage facility, no one noticed, and no one cared.
4.
Belaster never bothered to wonder how the GI had gone from “man” to “computer” to “engine.” He never wondered if the GI had come to this ship as he was now, or if the great work had been done aboard. The Unrevealed Manual made no mention of these details. If anyone was curious about these facts, they had ceased to be curious about them many ages ago.
The Great Innovation was capable. That's all the Engineer needed to know. Information from the Navigators went in, and with the flick of a switch, the ship simply “popped” from one point in space to another. So it was, so it is, so it would be, forever and ever, amen.
Access to the GI made the Chief Engineer a tin-pot dictator. The GI made the Command Executive a Puppet Royal. The GI made the Navigator corps a misguided and ignorant priesthood. The GI made commerce possible. The GI made the ship a marauding metal miracle.
Only Belaster knew it. On this good ship, the GI was God.
Belaster took the preliminary data from Navigation and processed it into the proper interface.
Impudently out of sequence, and with a bit of trepidation, the worship ceremony had begun.
5.
Will is among the stars. From every point, to every point, William’s consciousness existed under every rock, in every cloud, in the gulf between the stars, in the sliver of nothing between any two atoms you might like to choose.
Will had always been everywhere. He was in his center, wrapped in warm jelly. He was at an edge that never reached an end, far from the coldest glint of far-off starlight. He was his thoughts, he was his sense, he was all and nothing. Any memory of a hand, or a touch, or a breath, or a taste - or any such isolated singular foolishness - was gone. So long gone.
He did not know why the desire to focus came. At intervals, Will would desire to focus his conscience on one point. It lasted a second. He did not know what a “second” was, but that definition was fairly accurate.
In those moments, Will pulled back from the reaches of infinity, and for no reason at all, he would turn his being upon a certain point in space, very near a large floating orb, covered with light, and life. He would behold and embrace that point. Then his existence would fling back out to everywhere at once.
In that moment, the starship would move - in a blink - the distance between one planet and the other. Light years. A feat that would tax - almost to breaking - the resources of every other known starship in the universe.
By this gift of His will, the GI made of the starship’s ancient engines a great bounty of scrap metal bullion. By His grace and generosity, the Chief Engineer was made the Supreme Ruler in the true power structure of the ship.
Will did not know these things, he knew everything. Will did not care, he was care.
And being that, he was not capable of being surprised when a desire began to well in his contemplation. He was able to recognize that the craving was...oh, what was that word...he hadn’t thought of it (or the concept) in millennia...
New. That was it. This yearning was “new”.
How pleasant!
He didn’t think of it in exactly those terms, but it is a fair way to describe the aggregate of the wisps and winds of Will’s ancient thought process as it worked over the first hints of the coming fascination.
In the little Hidden Chamber aboard the starship, Chief Engineer Belaster adjusted long untouched controls, monitored geriatric output screens that had not shared light once in an epoch.
Inside the stasis pod, unseen and unmonitored, for the first time in an all but endless season, Will Gibson sprouted an erection.
6.
Captain Omen wondered why it was that after so much time on this ship, so many generations of Command Executives, it had come to him to suffer the slings and arrows of the current predicament. The men were set on going “off course”. And that course was set.
For better or worse, it would be he who commanded the vessel off her eternal merry-go-round, and out into far off spaces. For richer or for poorer. For sickness, more likely than health.
He moved the additional credits into the Engineering account, along with a highlighted copy of his original orders.
Again, he thought...”Fuck Engineering.”
The Master Engineer noted the ping on his network, and counted the increase. Nice work, when you can get it.
He ministered over the real controls of the starship - a little pad of characters and numbers attached to the pod that housed the G.I. Unless all his holy studies were shit, the information he entered would break the great ship from its long endless circle and off to the programmed destination.
And if it didn’t work? The old engineer didn’t think he had to worry too much about that eventuality. If his commands were in error, or the interface in a state of disrepair, they’d most likely all be dead in an instant.
Why had it come to him, this aberrance, after all the years of peace and profit that had been blessed upon his ancestors?
Blameless, he was. Not his idea at all. Orders come from the Command Executive, not Engineering.
As he pressed the “ENGAGE” key, he muttered again the ancient curse:
“Fuck the Command Executive”.
8.
The GI tensed. Actually
tensed in the surrounding medium, which jiggled slightly for the first time in forever.
Input crossed terminal space, information flowed, and Will Gibson’s essence changed focus from the XYZ vector of his current “center” across an etheric neuron into a different set of vectors.
9.
The Captain blinked as the starfield changed. In an instant. He’d seen this before, but this time, everything in his vision was new. Starjump successful.
As it should be. A simple thing, really.
10.
The Master Engineer blinked as the panel output display changed from “pending” to “complete”.
Starjump successful. As it should be. A simple thing, really.
Outside, in less time than could be imagined in the mind of a man, the great starship had jumped an unfathomable distance through space, broken the laws of time and light, and simply “appeared” in the dimensional spot the GI had focused on.
A simple thing, really. But this time - so new!
So wonderful. Inside his mortal chamber, for the first time in a very
very long time, a pathetic driblet of come spurted its way out of the GI’s cock.
Inside his mind, the GI released a long, slow, mental “ahhhhhhh”, followed shortly by three human words:
“Fuck the Universe.”
