2023.06.01 19:46 DenjaX First time travelling to Japan fumbles/bloopers trip report
I wish I found this subreddit sooner so I could expand my research prior visiting Japan. I only found this subreddit after I returned from the trip so after reflecting upon the trip I will write my mistakes that I made and things that I have learned so I can perhaps help other first time travellers going to Japan. It will be also useful for me in the future. PS: forgive my grammar, English is not my first language. Also a late report + numerous trip fumbles ahead so please be kind xDD
Me (30M) and my gf (25F) went on a trip to Japan April 24 - May 11, 2023. This was our first time travelling to Japan and our first time travelling in a different country by ourselves in general. We both had no experience travelling without family/experienced travellers with us so it was a bit stressful but we still had fun in general.
What we learned: - Get a very good shoes for extensive walking/hiking. I cannot stress this enough. Man, I returned with bunch of callouses on my toes+heels and blisters on my pinky toes that turned into some sort of stage 2 pressure sore. It was not fun walking with pain that I feel bad for unable to keep up with my gf. I had to sit many times to give first aid and end up buying some products for my feet. Was still able to complete all itineraries but it could have been prevented. No more Sketchers for me.
- 1 month prior to flight, my vegetarian gf attempted to become omnivore for the trip. She was sick for a couple of weeks for eating meat but she braved through it because she did not want to miss out on food while in Japan. She adapted in the end although she had nauseous from eating meat at times. In the end, there were actually numerous vegetarian options for her that she did not have to adapt in the first place.
- We needed more time to prepare for the trip. Our trip was kind of spontaneous and we booked the flight ticket around late March so we have to pay hefty amount of money more. The itinerary was too much than we could have accounted for. We should have given ourselves free time in between destinations and not clump them like there is no tomorrow.
- Check the weather forecast. Preparing for the itinerary while considering the weather can be very difficult as the weather in Japan fluctuates very easily. Good thing we group our itineraries that can be done indoors vs outdoors so would switch up the plan depending on the weather. I also did not know cherry blossom forecast was a thing. I visited places expecting some cherry blossoms and they turned out to be green when we get there. This is a good thing to consider while visiting during spring season.
- Be flexible for the trip. Our trip was supposed to be Osaka -> Kyoto -> Nagoya -> Kawaguchiko -> Tokyo. Then we switched up Tokyo and Kawaguchiko due to price increasing during the Golden Week. We visited within the Golden week period (we did not know this event was a thing) and we realized the price of hotels skyrocket within this period. I wanted to experience some high end ryokans in Kawaguchiko with a view of Mount Fuji but then the price was like 3-4 times the price during the Golden week, hence, we switched up the places. We saved money for lodging because of that.
- Popular restaurants + Tourist trap places can have long lines. If you have tighter schedule like we did, I highly suggest making reservations or come earlier to get into the lines. Even a lot of restaurants that open at 11am, I saw a line already around 9:30am. I did not have time for that that we end up visiting not so pupular places and yet still experience delicious food. Tourist trap places tend to be overrated and expensive. It is a good thing that we went to try other places. Our restaurant policy if there are more locals eating vs tourists eating, it is good and most likely cheap. Some restaurants also do not appear on google maps due to not adapting to the English language so you can usually find hidden gems here and there.
- I think it is better to check in a hotel with breakfast services as most restaurants open around 11am. We had hotel with breakfast service and some have dont. We end up buying food at combini and also got lucky with Denny's near our first hotel as it opens at 6am.
- Note for type of train traveling within your station. I only realized this during the middle of our trip. There is Local, Rapid, Express. Local stops station to station, rapid seemed to skip some stations, and express seemed to only stop at key stations. It is good that the stations have English translations and even the train pre recorded voice also had English parts.
- Check exchange rate before withdrawing money from ATMs. The currency exchange fluctuates but it is not a huge difference. It is still good to win as much money in the exchange to have more cash in hand. The money I lost due to the exchange were minuscule at first but they accumulate since I did not check exchange rate until I returned.
- I should not have been afraid to ask for help. I had this impression that Japanese people don't like to be bothered and they seemed resourceful themselves to not bother themselves asking. At least I learned this the second day of the trip. Hotel receptionists are good resource to ask.
What saved us the trip: - Being an anime fan/hololive fan helped me with the language. I watched so many animes that it surprisingly helped improve my vocabulary and I was able to understand people speaking in Japanese. Although I cannot read their language(thank god google image translate), I was able to hold conversation even though I speak like a toddlekindergartener. It is almost funny that some anime characters speak unnatural that I even used their kind of speech at times. I am ever so proud when some people told me "Nihonggo Jouzu"-d 4 times during this trip. Some people take that as an offense but I was so delighted when I received that.
- Booking online for reservation. We avoided spending more for this trip since we did not go to theme parks and focused on temple visiting as we preferred. We only had few reservations to do without much competition.
- Renting wifi device. I was about to use roaming but it was too expensive for a 17 day trip. Thank goodness for renting. Things would have been a disaster without my internet. Everyone should get their internet access as their priority.
- Get a power bank device. Since I use my phone all the time, the device dies easily. There are charging stations around but if you want to keep moving, bring your own and charge them while you walk. I had my 20000mah power bank and it is more than enough for charging 2 phones, 1 tablet, 1 wifi device for the day. I just charge the power bank while I sleep.
- Getting a Suica pass. This is self explanatory. I almost got into the hype of getting a JR pass too but I thought it was too expensive for me. I did not need a JR pass. With the help of google maps and Suica pass, I was able to go to my destination. I am amazed they put the price of the transport that I was able to choose which method of transport should I be getting. No taxis for me in this trip since I heard they tend to be expensive.
- Buying unlimited day pass also saved us some money for transport during the trip. It is a good practise to calculate your itinerary beforehand before deciding whether an unlimited day pass is a good option. There were days we did not buy unlimited pass.
- Putting Akihabara near end of trip than early. I would have ran out of money to spend for other places if I went there first.
Brief trip report: - Day 0 (April 25) - Arrive to Osaka after Layover from Narita around 8pm. Checked in the hotel and ate combini food before turning in for the night.
- Day 1 - Osaka Castle (entered with an entrance fee) -> Izakaya Toyo (watched the episode on netflix and decided to visit) -> Sumiyoshi Taisha -> Nagai Park (it was at this part I realized about the Golden Week as we saw construction of stalls as preparation) -> Team Labs Botanical. The botanical experience was underwhelming for me. I was only impressed with the blue lights on the foliage.
- Day 2 - Yoshino. This is the part where I wished I knew about the Cherry blossom forecast. I checked google to see where in Japan has best place for cherry blossom and it recommended Yoshino. The cherry blossom was already over but the place was still very nice and visited some temples there. I will definitely come back for the actual cherry blossom viewing. At least the Blue Symphony train was a cool method of transport to Yoshino. Then spent the rest of the day/evening at Tsutenkaku.
- Day 3 - Shittenoji Temple (they were building stalls for the festival? got few good pictures due to stalls within sights) -> went to Kobe and tried their Kobe beef from a golden cow plate restaurant in Kobe -> cable car to Nunobike Herb Garden -> hang around BE KOBE sign -> Dotonbori for the rest of the evening (VERY CROWDED).
- Day 4 - Nara. Rented bike there and went to various places. Nara Deer Park -> Sage Ike pond -> Kasuga Taisha shrine. Feeding deers everywhere. -> Todaiji temple (entrance fee) -> Kofukuji temple -> Higashimuku Shopping Street -> returned bike then train back to Osaka-> going first time trying bath house in Solaniwa.
- Day 5 - Checked out hotel. Used Kyo Train Garaku to Kyoto. Used a coinlocker since check in starts at 3pm. -> Jonangu Shrine (entrance fee for garden) -> Fushimi Inari Taisha. Attempted to climb up but my poor feet were screaming. We turned back after reaching the second station before Mount Inari. -> Gion for the evening before checking in to the hotel.
- Day 6 - Arashiyama Bamboo Forest (I was underwhelmed by this place as it was small. Make sure to come early as it gets crowded later on) -> Nearby Temples (Nonomiya, Mikami, Jojakkoji, Nisonin) -> Tenryuji Temple (entrance fee but most impressive garden I have visited this trip) -> Tenryuji Shigetsu to experience their vegan cuisine -> Sagano Romantic Train to Kameoka -> train back to shop around Arashiyama -> Kinkakuji Temple -> Nishiki Market for the rest of evening.
- Day 7 - Kiyomizu-dera (entrance fee) -> Sannenzaka (they have Starbucks in tatami there, also my gf visited "My Only Fragrance" shop and made her own perfume there). -> Yasaka Shrine (there were numerous food stalls everywhere I think this is how they celebrate Golden Week and I ate good) -> Heian Temple (entrance to garden). They also had numerous food stalls and a concert stage and I ate good -> Kodaiji Temple (entrance fee but they had a nice light show there during the evening).
- Day 8 - Nijo Castle (Expensive entrance fee compared to other entrances. Imo, there are other better places that should be more worth the fee compared to this place). -> Kyoto Imperial Palace (free entrance) -> Rokusonno Shrine -> Higashi Honganji Temple (free entrance. More stall constructions) -> Gion for the rest of evening.
- Day 9 - Check out Hotel. Used Hinotori express train to Nagoya. Always wanted to try capsule hotel and checked in to 9 hours hotel. -> Visited Nagoya Castle (entrance fee but I was disappointed we could not enter the castle itself compared to Osaka Castle). There were also numerous food stalls inside and I ate good. -> Visited their Malls -> Slept at the capsule hotel. To be honest, I slept really well compared to other hotels we have booked. It was surprisingly comfortable despite the random fire alarm that woke me up during that night.
- Day 10 - Checked out Hotel. Used Shinkansen to Tokyo. Checked in at the next hotel. -> Teamlab Planets (way better than Teamlab Botanicals) -> Dinner at Gonpachi (Kill Bill reference). The movie was old and it is the theme of the restaurant. Their food was mid though. It is just a nice ambiance where noise seemed to be welcome here.
- Day 11 - Suga Jinja (Your Name reference). Still surprised there are still visitors there due to that movie. Did some cringe Your Name photos. -> Meiji Jingu -> Explored Harajuku (visited Aoyama flower market tea house) -> Shibuya Crossing (ate good food there). Visited Tower Records + Don Quijote + Miyashita Park. Wanted to do Shibuya Sky but they sold out their tickets. End up getting lost among the crowds for the rest of evening.
- Day 12 - Nezu Shrine -> Sensoji Temple (It was raining too hard that day so we decided to come back another time. -> Shopping at Asakusa ROX + tried their conveyor belt sushi -> Akihabara (spent quite a lot of money here for anime merch). Anime store hopping + visited maid cafe for the first time.
- Day 13 - Sensoji Temple (better weather) -> Ate at Happy Pancake (I find it overrated but I still enjoyed their pancakes) -> Visited a big Muji store in Ginza -> Akihabara part 2 (more anime merch).
- Day 14 - Check out hotel. Left all check in baggages in a coin locker for 3 days prior heading to Kawaguchiko. Used bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko station. Took shuttle bus to hotel. Check in at ryokan with a bath house + footbath on their rooftop with nice view of Mt. Fuji. Walked around the lake + view of Mount Fuji. Found myself a waifu Kawaguchiko-san seemed to be the mascot of the town since I see the character on various tourist spots. Had myself a mini scavenger hunt to find all of her cut outs around the town and I found them all!
- Day 15 - Shopping for souvenirs around. -> Took the boat going around the lake with nice view. Took car cable up to have a better view of Mount Fuji. Walked up more higher to have better vantage point. Proposed to my GF, now I have a fiancée.
- Day 16 - Check out Hotel. Bus back to Shinjuku. One more stop at Akihabara for merch. Retrieved coin locker baggages. Train to Narita Airport then flight back to Canada.

2023.06.01 19:35 TheCriticalTaco Getting tired of my inlaws living with us and need some perspective on this situation.
So my wife and I are newly weds, I am 24 and she's 25. We got married in November 2022 and finally closed on our first house January of this year, 2023. We're both out of college grads working decent jobs in a growing city (Austin, TX). I graduated first before her and moved to this city first, I had to pay full rent on my own when I was living here alone and that ate up about half of my then salary.
My family lives aboard and I only get to see them once every two years or three, lately I haven't been able to travel to them due to some visa issues so they are the ones coming to see me. My wife and I agreed that we would let them stay with us since they are coming from abroad and I only rarely get to see them. This includes my two sisters and both my parents, and we had agreed and talked about this in December. They are going two stay exactly two months, the girls are coming earlier, then my father is only spending the last three weeks of those 8-weeks.
Now, fast forward to April of this year, roughly only 3 months after we got our first house together and living alone, my wife's father (FIL) gets a new job in the same city we are in. He is making roughly what my wife and I make combined, and this is a huge step-up for him. His wife (MIL) also works, shes a realtor and also got other part-time remote work, so she is working roughly two jobs. To say that they have the means is an understatement. He is set to start work in April and they start looking for places to live.
First they decide that they want to buy a house instead of rent; fine, more power to you.
Then they find a house that they really like, lakeside just like their other lake-house, but turns out it is a new-build, and it will take some months to finish (they say 6mo, but they just broke ground in May, and there have been numerous delays due to weather, so I have a feeling it will be more than 6 months, that is just something contractors say to get you to sign).
So they asked my wife if they can stay with us until the house is done, agreeing to leave right before my family comes seeing as they had "booked" our place first. So they would be staying with us for two months (they currently are as I am writing this). When the wife brought this up to me, I obviously couldn't say no; tit-for-tat, if she will deal with my family staying, I will deal with hers.
The problem is it is now 6-weeks into their stay with us and I am starting to get fed-up. I don't feel like I am in my house any more and lost my sense of privacy. Everything we purchase (cause again, we got a new house and needed to buy new appliances, grill, oven, etc) the MIL takes pictures of and shares with their extended family groupchat (she's an oversharer), in that groupchat, one of the aunts LOVES to comment on everything we do, and keeps saying "Oh those lucky DINKS!!" (double income no kids).
I find that quite irksome just flat-out envious/greedy. That term is disgusting. We are two young people just starting out their lives and we are allowed to spend a little on our future house. Most of our old furniture tools are hand-me-downs I got from my college frat-house! Plus, no one told her to date a guy with a previous marriage with kids.
Not to mention, the in-laws don't have any kids in college anymore, haven't for quite some time. And even then, my wife graduated with student-loan debt, I didn't. My parents paid for everything for me, and are doing the same for my two sisters. I feel like that deserves some respect. Even though they earn less that what my in-laws make.
The in-laws are making roughly four-incomes, buying a new lakeside house, got a new car, yet we are the one envied of what little we have when we make purchases. It feels annoying. And I am a very private person, I don't like sharing what we purchase.
We also don't have privacy in the sense that, I can't lay down with my wife on the couch and do nothing. I can't just walk around the house in my underwear or no shirt. We barely get to sit and watch TV now, we have to retreat to our room and watch there. They (in-laws) leave on weekends to go back to their place and then com back Sunday-night. I live for those weekends when they're gone, but during the week it feels like I am confined.
My only worry now is that, after my parents leave in August, they ask to come stay again until their house is done god-knows when...
Am I an asshole for being annoyed at their stay? Shouldn't they just rent out a place until theirs is done, or buy something that is already done? I am willing to accept the situation now, but if they do ask to stay after, I am afraid I will have to say no to my wife.
EDIT: I also want to say that the FIL has helped us fix a lot of things in the house, and installing new toilets. They also did help us move-in. But I feel like that still does not offset the change in our lives when they can very easily rent-out. The MIL also got proceeds ($8k) from the sale our house since she was our realtor, even though I am the one who found the house, toured it, and sent it to her. All she did was the paperwork and the "representation", which wasn't much and frequently made mistakes.

2023.06.01 19:33 needhelpsortlife What Career Options are There for My Current Health Situation?
I feel stuck and I don't know what are the options out there I can get into.
For starters I have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) by 2 different therapists. It's hard when I'm overwhelmed I get incapacitated and my brain just shuts down. It gets to the point of affecting my physical health and always tired and sick constantly. My therapist was really amazed at how self-aware and soft-mannered I am given my condition but it's no surprise how beaten up I am and easily burned out with those extreme emotions bottled up and held back. End of January this year I've been diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) and it doesn't help that I get tired easily and need about 2 days to recharge if I went out the whe day or doing chores around the house especially vacuuming.
I've been employed as a government teacher starting March 2022 but I'm actually still under probation so I'm not entitled to even get unpaid leaves and the ministry was genius enough to place me in a faraway school in a state that is a 9 hours drive. My mom doesn't want me to be alone due to my mental health and I have no relatives there. The school knows about my situation too so they are doing the best they can to assist me but they can't go far due to the ministry of edu's rules amd regulations. I do enjoy sharing knowledge and seeing students starting to find joy in learning but that's just it. I don't enjoy being in school. I don't like making connections and building rapport with colleagues and hormonal teenages looking for a figure to lean on. Those things drain me. I don't like the education system and how they take my time to rest and recharge since after working hours school would send last minute updates to relay to the students and students & parents will try to text and call you to consult. The extra classes, extracurriculars, school cheerfulness, gardening, painting, office and class interior designing... All use the money from our pockets because the schools have no budget to allocate those compulsory activities. I've been in 5 different schools within the span of 4 years as a practical, assistant, and private school teacher, I don't find joy. But I don't know how else am I supposed to make money.
I do have a safety net. I'm staying with my parents while waiting for my transfer request to push through and my boyfriend said he doesn't mind if I become a housewife after we're married and he'll support us both because he said work is not worth it if it's making me miserable. Honestly I would just want to be a housewife with a remote part-time job to get side incomes but I have no idea how to do it too aside from small time businesses. My mom has been pressuring me to push through my transfer request but I'm not looking forward to going to school and been second guessing on continuing my job as a teacher but I need to find a backup job to sustain myself, especially with the recession. I can't have my parents supporting me financially forever in case I quit and it's embarrasing for a 29-year-old adult. I actually feel useless from time to time.
If it might be of use as to what choices I might have: I have a bachelor's degree in TESL but I don't want to become a teacher in schools. I've been an animator (some of the series our cmpany worked on were aired on DisneyXD and Nicklelodeon). I liked doing animation but being a teacher pays more however both have no work-life balance. I've worked in a wallpaper shop to learn a little bit about interior design. I like to dabble in graphic design and I can draw well but I've left my skills to rust. My family said I'm very good with animals espcially when it comes to aquascaping. But I don't think there's demands/market here. I'm also into animal rehabilitation but most are NGOs amd can't pay you and ask you to pay instead. I told my mom I could do small groups tutoring, rent a small office for a couple of days a week and do activities to kickstart students' interest and joy in learning (I have that skill) but she questioned the practicality aspects: The market, the initial reputation/networking, renting, gas and fees. Will I get my profit? And no one would be interested in hiring me due to my CML. Those are all the options I could think of and no one in my circle can give me constructive advice since there's no exposure other than being in a white collar job is safer and respectable/reputable. They all don't want me to let go of my government teacher position. Other than that their focus is on business.
I appreciate if any of you have any thoughts? Thank you very much and I appreciate any insights. Sorry for any mistakes or if it's all over the place and doesn't make any sense. It's late at night and I'm sleepy but I keep on thinking about what choices do I have with my current health condition.

2023.06.01 19:27 70-w02ld My Bitcoin QT Core is a Full Node and now the fun begins!
I also just ordered one Antminer S9 with the OS Brains update and it comes with a PSU - am thinking of using the Mineral Oil idea with an Aquarium -
Am also open to accepting incoming connections - haven't whitelisted my private IP for the S9 -
Am interested in whitelisting Full Nodes but am not sure who to trust. Would like to whitelist some of Africa's and South Americas Full Nodes and get in on their transactions. But I think they're all Bitcoin Cash and Lightning Network - which I'll setup in the coming months and help out the Network.
Im open to allowing people to Mine Bitcoin using my node! I need to look into setting up a website for it, or just go generic and allow people to use my rpcauth and they can use their own Bitcoin wallet address - and accept donations, and possibly rent out my S9 - we'll see.
How should I go about letting miners mine my node? Aside using my rpc user and rpc password and the two rpctheads I have open.
Thoughts?

2023.06.01 19:23 Strategy_Gamer The Phoenix Rises (16/?)
FIRST PREV NEXT
Memory transcription subject: Captain Sovlin, Federation Fleet Command Date [standardized human time]: July 26, 2136 My morning alarm blared, forcing my groggy eyes open and I slammed my paw onto my holopad to shut it up. Beleaguered, I sat upright, stretched, then tore myself from bed to get ready for the upcoming day.
I had been given a hotel room in the Grand Capital Hotel just outside the governing hall, oftentimes reserved for diplomatic and administrative personnel as well as experts and guests who were invited to activities and votes. Its mixtures of green flora mixed with brown walls and large glass windows with intricate metallic designs perfectly encapsulated the value of art and botany in Aafa. Its interior designs were just as luxurious, with displays of natural free-flowing water dotting most floors. Given the near-monthly nature of large-scale events of Aafa - whether they be simple conventions or summits such as this - the hotel saw continuous use as many governments and private individuals would arrange for their own to stay the duration of the ongoing event. I had personally insisted that I didn’t need such arrangements, but both Piri and Nikonus wanted me to be well rested.
Unfortunately for them, I never had the liking of overly luxurious spaces. With years of naval service under my belt, I had become accustomed to living in utilitarian rooms and barracks; anything more opulent just seemed
wrong. While I appreciated the beauty of it, I could hardly bear staying here - I was the leading officer of a fleet and there was a war to fight. These were not times to enjoy hedonistic pleasures. One quick breakfast later, and I tried to make my way towards the summit hall.
Tried to.
Massive crowds surrounded the governing hall, choking off almost every possible access point. In several areas, tents had been pitched on open ground and even a few entrepreneurial stalls had popped up, catering to the entrenched crowds. I had to make a deliberate point out of flattening my quills as I jostled my way through the throngs of people. Most were native Kolshians, but a sizable minority were other Federation species, keen on seeing the summit firsthand; I could only guess to the size of the online audience. I wouldn’t be surprised if the live viewership was in the hundreds of millions. Recordings of the summit would likely get tens of billions of views within hours.
That in of itself was hardly surprising. A supposedly exterminated and long-forgotten predator species suddenly rose from the dead? And then that
same predator species destroyed three patrol vessels? News organizations had been quick to seize the sensational story, as they churned out headline after headline. Some suggested that the humans had already amassed a fleet of ten thousand ships ready to launch. Others focused on the gruesome aspects of humanity’s brutality and cruelty. I knew the former was wrong; if they had ten thousand ships ready, then they would have attacked by now. Given the primitive nature of the orbital installations detected by the patrol, it was obvious that they had only recently clawed their way back to a state that we had found them in before our first extermination attempt.
Such common sense, however, didn’t stop the all-consuming media from running obviously false headlines or opinion pieces such as: “
Venlil Prime Would Have To Surrender to Humans If Attacked For Chance of Survival: Military Expert Analysis.” What dull idiot gave that opinion, anyway? I’d pluck every quill from him if I could for suggesting that Tarva would
willingly surrender to
predators. I know her! She wouldn’t do that. Not to mention, I’m doubting the credentials of this so-called “military expert.” The article was published by the rag known as
Federation Today, a news outlet exposed by the well respected investigative reporter Cilany herself. Unfortunately, that non-credible source had once more found a market in fanning the fears of the populace.
The only people who read that stars-forsaken newspaper are old ladies hundreds of light years away from danger. Not to mention that FT hasn’t been relevant for a whole decade… until now. I continued pushing my way through the immense crowds of people, even as I was internally lamenting the poor reaction of the media. While many were here simply to watch the summit, a significant portion of them were protesters. Some held signs demanding the new infestation of predators to be summarily exterminated. Others were demanding answers as to why the previous extermination failed. I could deliver answers and solutions once I was inside, though progress was slow as the streets grew ever more packed the closer I got to the hall.
Eventually, I finally managed to reach a private entrance that wasn’t blocked by the crowds. I showed my credentials to the extermination officers stationed outside of the door, who promptly waved me in. The insides of the chambers proved to be nearly as loud and bustling as the outside. While there was a greater degree of order, I could still overhear arguments for caution, declarations of support, and cries for immediate extermination. I knew I would have to appeal to a large and diverse audience with competing interests.
Unlike what the Federation often tries to outwardly portray, the member species are anything but unified. Rivalries abounded within the Federation, whether political, economic, military, or otherwise. For one, there was an ongoing trade war between the Fissan Compact and the Nevok Imperium, as the upcoming Fissans had attempted to undercut the Nevok’s business deals across the galactic scene. The bigger power-brokers, like my own Gojid Union, had routinely been at odds with the other powers like the Krakotl Alliance, especially in military affairs. Lastly, political leadership jostled around frequently, and committee chairs had a notoriously short turnover rate. The rare exception to that was the Kolshians - who typically headed several committees due to their expertise in multiple fields of study - and the Farsul, who tended to always chair the Historical and Cultural committees because of their expertise in those fields of study and education.
The only
true unifying factor amongst the Federation was the war against cruel and unpredictable predators, whether it be Arxur or common pests. While I was long disillusioned with many of the higher points of “prey unity” pride, I had long known that this was a fundamental war of survival as we, prey races, had to form one large herd to overcome the existential threat that predators faced. And now, with a new species of spacefairing predators laying at the frontier of the Federation, we as a herd needed to deal with them quickly and competently.
And yet I’m concerned about both of those things. Competence and speed seem to be rare commodities within the Federation. I sat down at my assigned seat in the massive auditorium next to member species from other parts of the area of space that the Gojids inhabited. The Venlil Republic, represented by Cheln, sat to my right.. On my left was Doctor Zarn, a part of the Gojid delegation in spite of his Takkan heritage, who gave me a tail flick in greeting. Further to my left was the Zurulian representative Chauson, who seemed to be conversing with the Tilfish ambassador. I began reviewing the documents I had taken with me to prepare for the report I was to give to the governing chamber and the hundreds of cameras recording for the billions of citizens watching from either outside or at home.
Nikonus tapped his microphone with one of his purple tentacles to indicate that he wanted to start speaking, and the noise and chatter immediately died down. In an unusual display of foresight, representatives who had been up and walking went back to their seats and sat down without a fuss.
We need more miracles like those on the front, with soldiers following orders that need not to be given. The Kolshian Chief rubbed his tentacles on his chin before beginning. “Esteemed members of the Federation,” he began. “We have called forth this summit to discuss solutions to the extremely concerning developments on the border of the Venlil Republic. There is a new group of intelligent space-faring predators at the Federation’s doorsteps, ready to expand beyond their home system. They are already known to those who delved deep into the history of predators: the Humans.”
Not a peep could be heard from the dignitaties in the room as Nikonus let the hall fester.
The Kolshian leader continued, satisfied with the weight of the situation settling on the audience. “It appears that these predators survived the onslaught of the extermination fleet almost two hundred years prior. A preliminary investigation into the ill-fated extermination attempt has revealed that it was both rushed and unprepared. Thus, the matter to discuss today is a second extermination attempt - one which avoids the shortcomings of the first. As such, the first to speak shall be the Venlil delegation, to testify about the situation within their space. Following them will be expert testimony before a broader discussion through the chamber. Questions are to be kept until after these experts have finished speaking.”
The Venlil diplomatic advisor stood to speak. He seemed rather uneasy, which could have been mistaken for stage fright without the knowledge that he’d been uneasy all week at the mere thought of predators living within Venlil space.
“Thank you, Chief Nikonus.” Cheln started to address the hall with a nervous gait. “Humans have been encountered a-alive within claimed Venlil territory. We sent a scout force of four on a mission to investigate what was thought to be a smuggling base between their system and Venlil Prime, but instead ended up encountering a single Human patrol ship. The Humans attacked first, and without communication. O-only one scoutcraft came back alive. Included within our data package are the testimonies of the t-two survivors.”
The battle was already galaxy-wide news. What wasn’t was the fact that the Humans only had one ship. Much of the chamber was taking glances at each other. The Krakotl ambassador seemed to be puffing out his feathers. The Suleans and Iftalis were whispering to one another. The unease within the auditorium was palpable.
“They are still undoubtedly the monsters they were before the extermination,” Cheln continued. “What civilized species attacks first and talks later? I don’t think you could ever find anything like that in our history books. E-especially not since we’ve been in space! Even if we didn’t know who this species was, we could very well guess that they’re predators. To prove that, I yield my time to Doctor Zarn, of the Gojid delegation.”
Nikonus affirmed the request as Cheln sat back down. Zarn took that as his queue to stand, moving to the front of the auditorium. While the Federation very much knew of the qualities of predators, it was always good to remind them as to why predators were dangerous enough to warrant extermination.
“Thank you, Ambassador Cheln,” my tough-skinned head doctor began. He brought up a slide presentation on the screen. “A doctor’s oath declares the intent to save all life. Animal or sapient. Young or old. Good or bad. However, for those unaware, I wrote my doctoral thesis on humans. I argued that some life is not worth saving, and used humanity as an example of a lesser known predator that is as capable, potentially even worse than the Arxur.“
“The humans were at constant war with each other and only accepted the absolute destruction of their rivals.” He flickered through some images we obtained. One showed nautical vessels being bombed by outdated propeller airplanes. The next was a clip from the point of view of a bomber levelling a large city.
They had cities? “Their idea of warfare entailed the mass bombing of their rival’s cities and gathering each enemy offspring in butchering camps to roast them alive.” The next slide was a group of predators lined up next to a ditch filled with bodies with predator soldiers aiming at them, presumably ready to execute them. “They-”
“Enough!” Nikonus gurgled. Everyone looked ill. I noticed some visitors had lost the battle to keep their breakfast inside of their bodies. Even I, who had seen what the Arxur did to innocent civilians in-person could barely hold my stomach. “We don’t need these painfully grotesque images and videos. Please, skip them and move on. I believe you’ve made your point.”
Zarn seemed unamused and closed the presentation. “All of this is documented in detail within the Farsul archives. These humans, even as a doctor sworn to protect life, are not worth saving, even for study. They are a blight on the face of the universe and must be eradicated.”
With the situation established and the evil of humanity exposed, it was now time for me to provide my full testimony as an expert on the military threat that Predators pose. The opportunity to set the agenda was a first to me. Political fights in the Federation, as a military commander, always felt like a gruelling uphill climb; I felt gracious to be in the driver’s seat on any political issue for once.
As Zarn sat down, Nikonus called on me as the military expert. I rose to speak.
“Thank you, speaker. The solution to the human problem can only be found in a thorough extermination of their cradle. In the long run, they may prove to be crueler and more capable than the Arxur, but we still have time to prevent this eventuality. An infant predator is still merely an infant, after all. And I have more than just sayings to back my words.”
“Human capabilities are next to nonexistent. Firstly, they responded to an intrusion into their system incredibly late, engaging only when the scout patrol was nearly in orbital bombardment range. Secondly, they only sent a single vessel. This leads me to the conclusion that they lack a large fleet of ships and that, even if they did have something significant, few would have FTL capabilities. They do have some orbital defenses, however. Ground defenses are unknown, but given the incredibly primitive state of their orbital defenses, I do not think that it can be considered a threat.”
Now to address the Mazic in the room. Bringing out my holopad, I transferred the footage of the human patrol craft simply blinking out of reality. Several audible gasps could be heard from the crowd.
“The most worrying aspect of Human capabilities is their apparent novel FTL drive.” I started hammering into the one true threat that Humanity fielded. “Looking through the logs of the returning scout ship reveals that the ship never detected any subspace disturbances. In addition to this, the visual and extravisual sensors only detected the craft as soon as it materialized in front of their ships. Therefore, the only possible conclusion to draw is that these predators invented a form of FTL travel that is completely undetectable.”
“The largest risk is that these humans, using their undetectable FTL travel, come into contact with the Arxur. I do not believe these two bloodthirsty predators could ever cooperate, but the chance that they
might, and that this FTL tech falls into
Arxur claws is perhaps the most pressing concern we currently face. The Arxur, if they find out about humanity’s novel FTL, would likely raid Earth and take the tech for themselves. Either that, or humanity, given that they, as predators, are much more sophisticated than the Arxur, might willingly give the FTL over to the Arxur knowing their demise is near.”
“Thus, the need for careful planning and a decisive blow that leaves the humans little time to think while they’re being attacked is utterly necessary. A piecemeal force, either for scouting or extermination, will be obliterated by predatory tactics. And, both to carry the antimatter bombs and in the chance that the Arxur discover the humans too, we need overwhelming force to ensure the success of a complete extermination.”
I sat down in a steady manner. Instead of waiting on the next expert witness, behavioral scientist Chauson, to testify though, Jerulim, the Krakotl ambassador, suddenly lept up, tail feathers puffed up and out. The krakotl nearly bled everyone’s ears out, screeching, “we need an
immediate attack! If these predators somehow came up with an FTL drive that we can’t detect, then the only way we can ensure that they die is that we exterminate them
now!”
I got back up to retort but Cupo, the Mazic president who had shown up personally for this summit, did that for me. “Did you not listen to a word that Sovlin said or read a single bit about the prior attempt? Rushing this extermination is a ridiculous idea! Not to mention, if what Sovlin says is true, then they could attack us anywhere at anytime without us even knowing! We need to protect each of our worlds with fleets before they abuse that!”
The Krakotl leaped from his seat and began to dive onto the Mazic. “HOW ABOUT THIS ‘SURPRISE ATTACK’ YOU COWARD?!” he screeched as he dove feet-first into the side of Cupo.
It seemed like the situation in the chamber was quickly getting out of hand. As the unstoppable force of the brightly-colored ball of feathers collided with the immovable object that was a Mazic, I noticed that Cheln was on the verge of fainting again whilst Zarn was rushing off to presumably tend to wounded ambassadors. If Zarn was unamused earlier, it was now Chauson’s turn as he was to speak after I finished.
In the midst of the chaos, the lower chamber doors flung open and out came a Kolshian whom I recognized as one of Nikonus’ staff that I had seen yesterday.
What in the world is he doing here? The entire chamber turned quiet, including Jerulim and Cupo who seemed to put on a temporary truce to see what was the commotion.
The blue Kolshian was heaving from exhaustion and he stumbled up to the central podium. “T-The- the predators… they’ve…” he heaved out. I noticed I was holding my breath at the news. He took a few more breaths. “They entered the home system of the Venlil Republic… attacked an outlying outpost… and revealed themselves to the acting commander before leaving!”
Everyone was stunned into silence, broken only by the sound of Cheln hitting the floor.
Again? The guy has a fainting problem. The auditorium erupted into chaos. Jerulim began shouting that he was right. I heard Cupo trying to shout over him, and succeeding. Several species’ delegations were out of it or cramming themselves out of the exits. Nikonus tried to get everyone to calm down, but that didn’t work. The whole chamber was on the verge of a stampede.
I sat in my chair in shock. This was bad. Very bad news. The humans had the ability to enter and leave any of our systems at will, and
they knew that. They were much more clever than I had given them credit for. Much more clever than Jerulim, even, who was now redoubling his demands for an immediate extermination attempt - one that would again end in disaster.
We had no idea what these predators were like, or what they were capable of. Or what they
weren’t capable of. We couldn’t rush it. But they needed to be dealt with swiftly. This whole ordeal would test me more than any Arxur fleet ever did.
The benefit of success? Back to the status quo with the rampaging Arxur. The price of failure?
I didn’t want to dwell on that.

2023.06.01 19:22 Dear_Cardiologist460 My mental health is suffering hugely from nightmare neighbours, and it's hard for the police to get involved.
I also understand this
may not quite fit in this subreddit, but I'm desperate at this point, mods please feel free to remove if you deem necessary.
This is a very long post.
I'll post a TLDR at the bottom, and I appreciate you taking the time to read this. I understand it's an awful lot, but it's an awful lot that's happening to us!
Where do I begin... I live on a quiet street. I am a private tennant to a very sweet landlord who knew all of the neighbours on said street as they lived here long before I even moved to this town. All of the neighbours, apart from two houses and my own are privately owned by the occupants. The other two are council owned. I live in a terrace, and the property next to me is the end of the terrace, which is a council house. This is sort of important to state.
We had nightmare neighbours before when we moved in, but after a few (this is an understatement but it's not important right now) noise complaints and constant council pressing, they abandoned the property. It was empty for maybe half a year and then a family had been moved in. A pregnant lady (the main issue), who I shall call Beach, the baby daddy, who I'll call Aggro, and their two sweet twin toddlers.
I'm salty I can't think of names right now Beach was actually due that week, which I could resonate with as I was currently pregnant at that time also. We had a nice greeting, sometimes said hello but as I was having a difficult pregnancy I stayed inside a lot.
A couple months pass and the arguments started. This is the downhill part. At first, we thought nothing of it. They have a newborn, things are heated enough, it's stressful, we get it. It was for us when ours finally came along, but then the arguments got violent. The words they used were awful, and I mean
AWFUL. He would constantly call her a fat
[email protected] (I'm sorry) and any other name under the sun, she would scream at him so loud we couldn't understand most of the words but they weren't nice. The little ones are screaming, crying, generally upset because of this shouting match. It goes on for days on end, and we're getting so stressed having to hear this. We start recording what's going on (learned that from the last ones) and call it in. At first, it was terrifying because when the police would turn up, Beach would scream at the officers. (Like, wtf?) The more they argued, the more we called, and it was getting very heated. There were incidents where they would recklessly drive off, would scream in the street, one time the police had blocked their car in the middle of the street and she was SCREAMING at everyone, saying things like "he's a drug dealer go arrest him" and other weird statements. We then came to learn he actually is a dealer as we've witnessed multiple deals go on, and Aggro has even gone so far as to leave the house with the children unattended briefly to complete a drop around the corner. It's a LOT of drama.
I have multiple recordings of them arguing, of her screaming, of him acting extremely agressive towards her, sounds of walls being punched, their children crying, her abuse towards her children, with some examples being her stating "get out of my bag you filthy brat, where's my weed" said in a very alarming tone... To her toddler. She has said a lot of alarming things to her children which you just, don't say.
The heat gets bigger and she gets more upset that the police are being called on her all of the time, but any time they are called it's always for a legitimate reason, and I always have proof to back it up. The police have reassured me I'm not doing anything wrong, and to keep doing what I'm doing. At this point, the council are also involved, as much as they can be because most of the issues are for the police to handle, but they're still in the loop. This is where the housing layout is important. Because I am their only neighbour, they assume that it is me and only me who is calling. I have spoken with my other neighbours as we get along well, and they also call when they can hear it. One of them even got involved when Beach was screaming and swearing at her little ones to tell her to knock it off because they're only little. The whole street is sick of them at this point.
Fast forwards a little. One of my good friends takes me grocery shopping sometimes in his van. We had set out, baby in her seat in the back and had got as far as one street over. We had stopped at a junction because a tram had just pulled into the stop on the right, and a bus was also parked in the bus stop on the left. We couldn't move, as there was no clear right of way, so we waited, like literally anyone would. And then we hear beeps. Check the rear view mirrors, and we can see the neighbours car behind us getting impatient. The important thing to note, was that we have been sitting waiting for less than 20 seconds. We then hear the engine get loud, and see that the car is pulling up onto the pavement to undercut us, drive out onto the path near the bus stop and then very quickly speed off over two lanes. I
wish I had this recorded because it was so illegal and horrid. We laughed it off, didn't think much of it after.
More time passes, and my parents are visiting to see their grandbaby. Beach has a friend over, let's call her Syko. My parents are parked on the road near the neighbours house, as my driveway is full with two cars who have rented my driveway out through Your Parking Space. Where they have parked is not on the neighbours property, nor is it in front of their property, it is about a car lengths behind - usually where visitors park for our street. Not in front of anyone's driveway or anything, just down the side of another person's house on the road. Syko appears a while after my parents do in her car, along with Beach in her own car and parks in front of her house. Syko parks super close to my mum's car and they're both out there revving their engines, causing a lot of noise. I make a side comment to my mum saying oh be careful they don't hit your car, joking about the previous situation. This causes my mum to go out and check on her car, and we don't think anything of it. I'm cooking my baby breakfast, we're just chilling. Then the shouting happens. I step outside with my dad to see what's going on, and the two are screaming at my mum, my mum is stood startled and confused why she's being screamed at. They turn to me and start screaming at me, "who is this?" In which I reply "none of your business?" Because, well, it isn't? They then get childish and start calling all of us names, saying my mum looks like a bloke and other random nonsense. My mum can't pass at this point as we were certain that she'd get attacked. I'm holding my baby the whole time this is happening so I don't have my phone (which I regret to this day) and I'm just trying to diffuse the situation. Meanwhile they're in their cars and Aggro is stood with the cars giving us a sh
t eating smirk in my direction. All the while, her children are in the back of her car. They're getting under all of our skins at this point as it's a lot of nonsense going on, when we're just trying to get my mum back in the house. She finally gets to my driveway, the cars start to drive off and I flip them the bird as they drive away. *Oh no, big mistake. (I want to add here, it was really hard to stay calm and be the bigger person this entire time. They have caused my family so much greif, and where I suffer from major anxiety it all got to me. I kept a brave face the entire time, but even the police agreed when I admitted my wrongdoing, they agreed it was hard as they got to me, and what they did next wasn't warranted in the slightest.)
Aggro starts shouting at me, asking why I did that. I stayed calm and just replied, or at least tried to, say something along the lines of well, they can say all of that to us and you're upset by a finger, to which I was interrupted with agression. Talking down to me, towering over me (at this point, my mum has the baby) and I'm just looking back up at him expressionless. He walks away to his house, then starts walking back over chanting "go get your man. I'm gonna fight him" over and over again, shouting louder and louder each time. At this point, the girls get out of their cars, abandoning them in the road along with her children in it, and my "man" (who is actually my wife 🏳️⚧️) isn't even home, she's in the office. Aggro spots my dad through my front door and says fine I'll fight you instead, to which my mum quickly gives the baby to him. Aggro steps over my wall, and
barges into my house. Yes. He's trespassing with intent to assault. Unfortunately the next part is a haze for me, as my anxiety shoots into fight or flight. I'm pulling Aggro out of my house by his coat, which comes off unfortunately. My mum is then also pushing him out of the house, and we hear Beach shout "get your hands off my man", which looking back at, is hilarious. You're not bothered he's entering someone's house, you don't care he belittles and screams those vile words at you. Ugh, anyway. I'm then suddenly graced with two fists to both sides of my head/face and from then, everything sort of gets blurred. From there, the two are on my driveway screaming at myself and my mum "I'm autistic, I'm disabled", and I mean they're both claiming the same thing. I'm sort of ignoring them at this point, I'm emotionally burnt out and just want to get inside. We finally get inside and lock the door, my dad is on the phone to the police already and the two girls flee the scene. I'm an emotional mess now I finally don't have to keep a straight face, I call my wife to get her to come home, it's just awful. There's blood all over my shirt and face as my lobe was ripped open, my face is marked and I'm a wet sobbing mess.
Police turn up, get everyone's story then go to Aggro to get his story. The girls are on the phone to Aggro instead of present, because if they were present they'd have been arrested. I should add, nobody was arrested at all. PO came back stating that Aggro claims he just wanted to talk, I start crying and hold my tongue as I just wanted to scream at that point. I make sure pictures of my face is taken, numbers were exchanged as my parents aren't from around here and they left. From what I gathered happened was the officers spoke to various neighbours to get CCTV and we're going to get in touch to take statements.
The following day, they have a huge domestic. All day, they're shouting at each other. I'm terrified to call it in and just drown it out, but it gets worse and worse as the day goes on, and there was a lot of physical violence e.g. punching walls, slamming doors. The children are terrified. I finally call it in, but I make sure to have a decent recording. The police attend, diffuse and leave. They call me to obtain the recording, I comply, easy peasy. Things get quiet from there on. We wait for the police to get back to us but we're left in the dark. At this point, the council are aware of the situation and are on our side. The domestics start up again, I'm recording it all, calling it in, they come out and diffuse. We're back to before the incident. Fortunately, at this point I have set up CCTV which records 24/7.
Then the aggravation starts again. They're banging on the walls, screaming through to us. They're reversing up onto our driveway as one of the students isn't there at the time. I'm being heckled when I leave the house to take rubbish out. I'm being watched when I'm hanging my laundry out. It's emotionally draining. I can't sleep, I'm not myself anymore. I've developed PTSD from the incident, I'm having panic attacks, I'm in a very low place. I'm keeping the council informed with what's going on as it's unacceptable antisocial behaviour, I'm also updating the police when I can. I file an online report to explain the trespassing and how it's affecting us and a BEAT team comes out to speak with us. I explain that whilst we know what they're doing isn't technically illegal there's still intent to upset us. They offer to speak with them, we say no because their presence is enough. We're told to keep doing what we're doing, keep recording, keep calling because it's not okay.
A couple weeks pass and everything is quiet. We're still waiting for the original officer to get back to us but nothing. And then it happens. A huge domestic. Record, call, police arrive. Beach is screaming at the officers, they leave and she's back in the house still screaming. Her parents arrive to calm her down and they're all in the garden. Because she's still shouting I go upstairs to record and I record at the exact time she exclaims that she wants to kill me, and she doesn't care if she gets arrested. Big yikes. I call it in and update, I'm then asked to attend the police station. The whole family leave the house, Beach is having a meltdown and the dad is trying to calm her. They take the children away (no car seats, just buckle them in the cars, clearly shown on CCTV) and leave her behind. She then storms into her car, carelessly reverses onto my drive, shouts out of her window and then speeds off. We then flee to the station, speak with an officer, all is filed. They said because the threat was indirect they can't help us as it wouldn't hold up in court, but have major sympathy for us as they know it's awful what's going on.
At this point the log against them is huge. I've contacted the NSPCC to update them on what's happening, all of the concerns from the past year and a half, everything. They are taken back by what's going on, they link in with the police and CPS and we're just waiting for them to do what they need to do. The odd domestic happens here and there, call, police intervene, leave. (I should also note, the incident happened two months ago.
Two months.) Things have slowed down, I'm trying to get a reply from the original officer but they're on leave, and it turns out they were trying to find any CCTV for the case before they got back to me.
One morning there was music, loud music. Blaring for quite a while, it's not your average oh they're playing music it's so loud you can't think inside your own home. I report it to the council and they come out to tell them off. Think nothing more of it. We then get a knock on our door later in the afternoon from three lovely officers who ask to speak with us. An
anonymous caller proclaimed my wife and I were having a domestic, and our baby was crying. To their surprise, they come in to see our baby happily playing with her toys and us just vibing watching TV. They talk to us separately, we comply, they're happy and agree it was a nonsense call. They had actually attended a domestic in the past, so are aware of the situation. We fill them in on what's been going on and they're shocked. They leave, we see them out, no harm done. I let them know they are always welcome to chat with us. (Fun fact, wasting police time is a criminal offence). About a week ago they're going off on one again, he's calling her everything under the sun, the kids are crying. I hesitate to call it in at this point because I know there will be repercussions, but I brave it. Police come out, they're all outside talking and I can hear Aggro saying they're wasting their time. Police argue they're not. They leave, whatever.
Now for the drama. To set the scene, last week I'm home with the baby, my wife is at work. The police have left. I'm putting my baby down for her first nap of the day, then go to wash my hair. I finish up, and start tidying the kitchen from breakfast when I get a knock on the door from one of the officers from the last call out. I happily invite her in, and she states she needs to check some CCTV with me, I happily oblige. At this point, I'm not being told what's going on yet as she needs to confirm what's been said by the
anonymous caller. What we see on the CCTV is the neighbours both leaving at around 9:03. 9:06 was the time of the incident they were proclaiming to have happened. The officer then explains that apparently at 9:06 I was screaming at the baby and she was crying. I laughed and brought up the baby cam showing she's fast asleep, and showed her my baby sleep tracking app, that she's been asleep since 9am. We both agree it was another nonsense call and move on, I wish her a good day and see her out.
Jump to yesterday, Syko, Beach and the other council tenant from across the road are on their front lawn having a very loud discussion about the incident. I open the ring camera to start recording as what they say could be incriminating and useful, as they were basically admitting to what happened. Syko is going off on one saying she'd happily beat me up, Beach is making us sound like were nonsense calling and that the police don't care about us when we call - which was laughable but they are still admitting to it. The neighbour is lapping up the drama and laughing with them, and then suggests that they post a lit bag full of vodka through our letterbox, pointing towards out door. Now, I'm stood with my wife showing her what's being said as it's happening. We're both in shock with what's being said, and I'm having a full body meltdown from the adrenaline. I'm frightened, and appauled. I send an email to the original officer explaining what's happened, that this really isn't okay and linked them the recordings. Now we're waiting for a response.
Phew that took a long time to write out. I'm sorry a lot of it seems like I'm blabbering, but when everything is put in the same basket, you can see that all of these events are horrible and inexcusable.
I will also add, after the first nonsense call, the council manager went to speak with her and her specialist at the property, and he called me to explain that she does in fact have autism, and she wants to let me know that she's sorry for what's happened. I replied almost laughing stating that what she has done is not okay, and just because she has autism doesn't mean her actions are justified AT ALL. We now know she really isn't sorry, proven by what followed with what I mentioned above.
What the heck do I do. I'm an emotional mess, the police are trying to help as much as they can but it's a long slow process. I can't move house, I'm on a long waiting list for psychotherapy, my wife is afraid to leave the house as her true self in fear of a hate crime as they have previously made a not so subtle side comment about her hair before, it's eating us alive. We're speaking with one of our neighbours who knows the other neighbour who may have gotten the incident on CCTV, but they're too fed up with getting involved with the police which is why it was never submitted in the first place. A lot of mistakes were made, I should have spoken to them sooner to convince them to send us the footage but I also think it was understandable as I'm having to live like a hermit in hopes I'm not targeted by these insane people. We need help, and I don't know who to turn to anymore.
TLDR:
Next door neighbours are having frequent domestic arguments with their children present. We are targeted by them as we call the police when they have these arguments. Young children / infant is present with all of this. Mother is abusive to said children, Father is an drug dealer with serious anger issues. I was attacked outside my home after a parking dispute by them. No CCTV evidence (yet, hopefully). Father trespassed in my home to assault my father but didn't succeed. Continuing domestic violence, continued aggravation towards us. They're getting desperate so call the police about fake incidents at our property. They're trespassing on our property to get a raise out of us but police can't intervene. Whole street is fed up with these crazy people living on our street. Council can't help. Mental health is in the pit as I can't leave the house without being heckled or my wife being put at risk for transphobia. We are stuck with what to do.

2023.06.01 19:22 agreementloop184 Birthday celebration ideas for a 40th birthday?
Been with my boyfriend for nearly 4 years. He’s turning 40 and I’d like to plan something really really nice, but also relaxed.
He loves the beach and relaxing. I was thinking to rent a really nice Airbnb in California hopefully beachside and hire a private chef for his actual birthday dinner at the Airbnb. I also wanted to hire someone to play an instrument / live music (not like a band or anything? More like instrumental background music) because I know he likes that stuff.
Does that sound cheesy? I don’t even know what to get him as a gift. But for the experience I thought this would be nice?
I also considered maybe he wants more than just me and him as he likes having a group of people to celebrate. But since it’s going to be out of state, I figured maybe a private romantic dinner and vacation would be okay too?
I think he’d like this for sure but I’m curious to know what you all think about it as well: should i include more things? I don’t really know of any activities we could do ? He loves snorkeling(?). But he’s also doing that before his bday too for several days, so it’s not ‘that’ special?

2023.06.01 19:20 TandyMiller1 Jobs in Golf
Is it crazy to quit my 80k job to make half as much as a caddie manager for one of the top golf courses in the nation? I would be surrounded by the game everyday and get to work at places that I would never be able to play since they are private. It’s a massive lifestyle change where I would have to sell or rent out my house and live out of a camper of studio apartment for the first couple years while working at a northern course in the summer and southern course in the winter. I’m in my 40’s and have no kids or wife so what’s stopping me?

2023.06.01 19:18 Dear_Cardiologist460 My mental health is suffering hugely from nightmare neighbours, and it's hard for the police to get involved.
BOY this is gonna be a
VERY long one. I'm also crossposting to a few subs as I need all the help I can get. But also, enjoy the drama? Trying to laugh about it all but it hurts so much, and their kids are also suffering.

2023.06.01 19:13 scientifichistorian Landlord wants me to purchase the property.
I'd imagine this is a bit of a unique situation, so here's the context:
My wife and I live in a two-family home, super cozy and very cheap (rent is $700 per month). I make $50k per year and my wife makes a bit more than me, under the table. Our credit score is not perfect but has made major improvements over the last couple of years.
Very recently, we've made the decision to move into her grandmother's home to help take care of her. During this time the only bills we'll have are auto insurance, a phone bill and student loans, all totaling under $500 per month. This means that - while we're there - we're gonna be saving a ton of money.
The goal was to use that time to just keep saving for the eventual goal of buying a house ideally next summer if possible (or possibly make a deal with her family to buy her grandmother's home when
that time comes). Last week, I had a discussion with my landlord about moving out and it just so happens that my parents are looking to move back up to my state to be closer to my wife and I, so they'd be glad to take my unit so my landlords don't have any vacancies.
In the middle of that discussion, my landlords revealed to me that they're actually looking to retire sometime soon and were hoping I would be interested in buying the property via a private sale between the four of us. It immediately sounded like a great investment opportunity to me, but questions began popping up in my head. Here's a few pros and cons I've come up with:
Pros
- I'd immediately have both units rented out
- I have very little expenses to worry about for the foreseeable future
- I've always wanted to invest in real estate
- A private sale would presumably make it a better deal
- I can take advantage of first-time home buyer loan benefits for this purchase
Cons
- I would almost certainly have to raise the rent from $700
- The home hasn't had much renovation in 30 years (built in 1990)
- My wife and I don't want to jeopardize our search for buying our forever home in the near future.
- Home prices in my state and interest rates are still uncomfortably high
- This could eliminate any other investment opportunities that could arise later.
My dream would be to do this and still keep the rent as low as possible for my tenants whom, in this case, are my parents and my close college friends. If they sell it anyway, the next landlord could easily double the rent and/or kick everyone out, which I definitely don't want. I guess my questions are:
- Do you still think this opportunity would be worth it?
- In a worse case scenario, I wouldn't want the rent to go above $1,200. Is it even possible to have a mortgage under $2,400 these days (I'm very new to all of this)?
- Having two tenants will go far towards paying down the mortgage, but what kind of other expenses should we consider that should or should not be factored in?

2023.06.01 19:08 Dear_Cardiologist460 My mental health is suffering hugely from nightmare neighbours, and it's hard for the police to get involved.
BOY this is gonna be a
VERY long one. I also understand this
may not quite fit in this subreddit, but I'm desperate at this point.

2023.06.01 19:01 joohie_ice Finding off-campus housing for an international student
Hey guys,
So next fall semester I'm gonna begin my first year as an MBA student at UCR. I'm trying to find a place to rent with other people and my budget is strictly $700 or less. Ideally, I'm looking for a private bedroom with shared bathroom. (Because I've looked and realistically I can't afford a private bedroom with private bathroom).
My main issue is since it's only June now, most options I see are either 1/People sub-leasing their room for the summer, and/or 2/The room becomes available beginning July. Because I'm an international student, it's hard for me to initiate or accept any offer right now.
Has anyone out there had been going through the same experience? Would you please be so kind as to share your wisdom with me? Where else should I look for a room to rent besides UCR off-campus website and Facebook groups? Maybe in late July/ August, will there be more housing options available that start on September?
Please help a stressed out student out. The semester hasn't even begun yet and I'm already crying myself to sleep worrying 😭
Thank you for reading!
