Utility line comes *through* main panel out to meter, back to panel for circuits

2023.06.01 21:00 EsCueEl Utility line comes *through* main panel out to meter, back to panel for circuits

Utility line comes *through* main panel out to meter, back to panel for circuits
We recently had an inspector at our house and he told us that our main connection was very very wrong.
Sloppy diagram below, but the utility is buried and comes up from the ground into the garage, into the main panel. Inside the panel, these coming in (the two hots) pass through the box, back out to a conduit/pipe across the garage out to the meter, and then back through the same pipe to the main panel, at which point those are connected to the main breaker and the the bus bars.
So, the meter is still in front of the panel in serial -- there's no shunting ahead of the meter or anything like that. But, the physical wires coming in pass through the panel/box, then out 16' to the exterior meter and 16' back in to the main bus and breakers.
I have to assume either the meter was originally inside the garage where the wires come in, and then the power company wanted it outside the garage for access, and so shunted it over there?
Is this legal, or ill-advised, or just weird and otherwise ok? Would it be better if the main was routed directly into the pipe leading outside, rather than emerging into the panel first and then back into the pipe? Or is there some requirement that the line needs to emerge from the ground near the meter and this extra 32' or so roundtrip violates that rule?
Seems like the power company would have had to hook up the meter in the first place, right? Not like a contractor can re-route the live wires coming into the house by himself, right? The house was built in 1940; this panel seems to have been installed sometime around 2000 maybe?

2023.06.01 11:43 JugglinChefJeff frame damage, how bad is it?

My wife and i bought a 2000 chevy astro conversion van in 2021, we thought we got a sick deal paying 4k for this van, it only had 100k miles on it, drove well, and was perfectly sized for our plan for it. we gutted it, insulated it, added shelves and i even built a custom roof rack for it (it has a fiberglass high top).
little did we know, the engine blew up after having it for roughly 1 month. we had prepared for this, we knew buying a cheaper van that the chances of us replacing the engine were pretty high, so we had no problem doing this. had a new Jasper engine put in.
then the transmission was acting funny, we spent about a year bringing it to mechanics and trying to diagnose the problem, no one was really interested in helping us so we decided to just have a new Jasper transmission put in and also had the power steering gear box replaced (power steering fluids have been leaking for a while, replacing the lines didn't help).
now when we bought the van, we bought it from a friendly guy in NYC (we later learned to never buy a car from NYC because almost every mechanic laughs at us when we tell them where we bought it), he said it was his dads, used to transport kids to and from school and short trips to the beach over the past 20 years. he said it was never in an accident.
when we were having the transmission put in, the mechanic asked my wife if it had ever been in an accident, we said no and he was surprised because he said he saw parts of the frame that had been repaired.
now, my wife is pissed, she wants to sell the van, i love the damn thing, especially since i've put so much time into converting it into something we could take big trips on.
What could be done about the frame damage? what can it cause? from what our mechanic has said, it doesn't seem that bad, but it worries the heck out of my wife. there is a shop near us that says they can do "near total collision repairs, back to better than new condition!" would it be worth it? whats the average cost of something like that?

Can someone with this same yeamake/model share a photo of their under hood fuse box cover? I want to see if it matches mine. I have fuses that are live that should be spares, according to the covers dialog. Also, on the diagram there is a spot that says "A/CON" that takes a 10amp fuse but in the actual spit were the fuse goes, there is nothing to make contact, like no metal ro touch and the fuse sits in the slot loose. I purchased this car certified pre-owned and hope that they didn't need a top for the fuse box and just grabbed whatever they

2023.05.30 23:36 bike_ski_vt Need assistance identifying which relay pins to use for heated seat buttons

Hi folks, hoping to possibly get some insight for how to properly connect a relay I plan to use for some heated seats.
To provide some background, I am in the process of retrofitting a pair of seats from a newer model of a vehicle into my older model of the same vehicle. Through research on forums, I had come across some helpful diagrams that identified which pins to use on the switches and relay to help wire up the seat heating elements. The issue I am facing is that these diagrams contain a relay that is too low of an amperage (3A) to use for the heated seats I am installing. For context, this is a 10-pin DPDT 12V DC relay. Based on what I have seen, the manufacturer of this relay does not make a similar style of relay with a higher amperage rating to easily wire up the heated seats.
With that said, I found a 30A DPDT 8-pin relay that could hopefully accomplish the same task? I would be certainly grateful for any insight you all could provide.
The pin identification from the item description on Amazon is:
I have attached pictures of the diagrams I have found. I have also included a link to the other relay I would hope to use. The OEM heated seat buttons have two levels of heat, so I am not sure if this may complicate this project. I have included this diagram as well.
Ideally, it would be great to identify the following:
Huge thanks in advance everyone! If this isn't the right venue for this post, please let me know.

Help with Installing Back Up Camera to Instrument Panel Fuse Block
Hi folks,
I'm installing the Auto Vox V5 Pro Mirror Dash Cam/Backup camera to my 2013 Chevy Cruze LS. I'm having trouble with the wiring, specifically connecting it to the fuse block. I've included a page of the camera manual which shows I need to connect the yellow wire (B+) to constant power source and the red wire to ACC using fuse tap adapters. I included a diagram of the instrument panel fuse block from the owner's manual.

Can someone help with picking the right fuses for constant power and ACC? Let me know if more info is needed!

2023.05.30 06:44 CharlieBellaNSFW C7 Black Infotainment Screen

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or help me w this.:. I have a C7 and the other day it rained in the top is off as soon as I realized I put the top on, wiped everything down, & dried the seats, etc.. a few days later I went to start my car and it was dead… So dead I had to take the key out of the five and open it via the back key area under the trunk and reset the key fob. It took 35 minutes being hooked up the jumper cables to finally get the car to start. It did start but when it started, the navigation had a black screen, no radio no Bluetooth navigation onstar are currently unavailable/not working. The drop screen still how’s up and down.. Also, the USB ports that I typically charge my phone from will not work I tried switching charging cables, & still no luck. I seem to think I probably blew a fuse and I think there is a parasitic drain on the battery, but I do not have a multimeter. I looked at the diagram of the fuse box in the trunk and I don’t really see anything for a radio regardless, I am many things, but Electrician is definitely not one of them lol does anybody have any experience with this? Is there any easy fix? Thank you in advance for your help.

2023.05.30 03:52 a-ham61593 Converting existing 12v solar system to 48v - help me check my work?

Converting existing 12v solar system to 48v - help me check my work?
Hi everyone. So I have a sprinter van that currently has a full 12V solar system. It uses 3 100W panels to a 40A charge controller, a 12v 400Ah battery, and a 2000W inverter. There are both 110V and 12V loads that are powered by the system.
We want to upgrade from a 12V system to a 48v system. As far as I can tell, we could do that by having a 48V solar array, into a 48V all-in-one solar chargeinverter that charges a 48V battery. The all in one would wire into the 110V breaker box, and the power from the battery would go through a 48V/12V step down converter before supplying power to the 12V DC fuse box.
My first question is in creating the solar array. My understanding is that you can wire them together in series-parallel in order to bump the voltage up to 48v but still maximize the amperage coming in. We want to try to reuse 2 of the current 100W panels in the system. Would be able to wire two 12v panels together in series, then connect that grouping to a 24v panel in series, then connect that grouping in parallel to 2 24V panels wired in series? Hopefully the diagram helps make sense of that word soup.
The other question is whether it really is as simple as adding the step down converter between the battery and the fuse box? We're trying to avoid digging into the house wiring at all costs, so it seemed like this was the simplest way to make this upgrade.
Please tell me any and every problem you see with this system (We're trying to figure out the kinks before we majorly invest in the components)
Here are the components we're thinking about using

48V Battery - https://trophybattery.com/index.php/product/48v220e-1/ OR https://signaturesolar.com/eg4-lifepower4-lithium-battery-48v-100ah/

Can I hook up a 3-way switch to this gable fan for speed control?
I'm looking to use a wifi-enabled 3-way switch as a toggle to control the high and low speeds of a gable fan I'm installing in my attic. I was planning on routing 14/3 wire into a junction box (from the upstream 3-way switch) to attach to the high/low wires from the fan. There is a thermostat and a fire fuse that both simply disconnect the wiring to the fan as far as I can tell - this needs to be in the path of the load.
Given the wiring in the diagram, would I need to directly connect the traveler wires to the high/low fan wires and then route the neutral back through the thermostat/fire fuse?

2023.05.29 17:44 bad_card Where can I find a fuse box diagram(accurate) for 2013(6th generation) sportswagon TDI?

I know this is an odd question in the modern Google era, but I can't find a diagram for my 2013 Jetta. It is a TDI, but my results are telling me it is to the left of the steering wheel, facing the driver. And it is rectangle. Mine is on the side of the dash that the door closes up to, and is a non rectangular shape. What's crazy is this is the first vehicle I have owned that doesn't have a diagram in the manual. What gives?

2023.05.29 08:40 SpontaneousLethal Service 4WD message inexplicably fixed itself?

Context, 05 Chevy silverado extended cab Z71 package bone stock. Previously had issue where ABS light was on, 2hi worked fine, 4 low worked fine, 4 hi worked fine. 4 auto would throw a "Service 4WD" message when in low traction environment. I've ignored the problem for months as i don't mind having to engage 4wd manually. However recently i decided to test 4 Auto again and stopped by a gravel pit to see if i could replicate the problem. I could not. ABS light is still on and the only thing i've done to the truck is clean the fuse box and change the oil. What could have caused this?

2008 Chevy Cobalt 2.2L - Cranks fine but does not run, not receiving fuel.
Working on a 2008 cobalt. Friend was driving and it stuttered and died on him. He took it to the shop and they told him it was the fuel pump, so I did it for him.
After I installed the fuel pump, the car cranks no problem but won’t start. It’ll start up with brake clean and run for a second before dying.
We aren’t hearing the fuel pump kick on. I checked the relay which was good, checked the fuse which was good. We checked voltage at the fuse and we don’t have it there, but we have constant battery voltage at one of the relay pins. I even ran my own 12v to the fuel pump relay/fuse and it still didn’t work and didn’t hear it tick on.
There’s a shrader valve on the fuel rail and nothing comes out of it. Makes sense since the fuel pump isn’t coming on.
I found a post on another forum that talked about the fuse box having a burnt run on it. So I removed the fuse box and inspected it, no issues.
So do y’all have any suggestions as to what it could be? Was thinking ECM but I’d hate just to parts swap. I couldn’t find anything online as to what to test on the ECM connector.
I’d really appreciate any input/help.

2023.05.28 18:03 Ephylix Power seat connector?

Power seat connector?
Hello folks,
Got a 2013 Nissan Rogue. Has a power seat for the driver seat, and I believe the connector is broken. Pics attached. The male side appears to be missing pins. There are 6 wires going in on the female side. I tested the connector with the car off and on and there was a voltage increase with the car on, which gives me the impression that there is power going to the seat. The fuse box doesn't appear to have a fuse for the seat according to the diagram, but it doesn't appear to have ever had one, even after the seat was repaired. Does anyone know what the replacement part for this would be? Am I better off just taking it to a mechanic?

I’m getting ready to replace the starter on my 2000 chevy tahoe z71 5.7l 350. I went to autozone and bought a direct drive starter. 2023.05.25 23:39 cbreezy4 Need advice on a situation with a service center

This is a long story so please bear with me: I have a 2017 Chevy Tahoe with 65k miles. I’ve been aware of some emerging transmission issues for about 2 months, took it to two local mechanics and was essentially told that it was the beginning of the end for my transmission. Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago I was traveling out of state and my transmission crapped out about a 3 hour drive from where I live. I had it towed to the nearest Chevy dealer and informed them of the situation. They replaced the transmission and informed me on Tuesday that they had done a test drive and everything was running smoothly so I took off work, drove 3 hours to the dealer, and PAID $6800!! I got about 300 yards away from the dealership and broke down completely, couldn’t accelerate or shift gears properly. We had it towed the short distance back to the dealership and they put me in a shitty rental and I drove the 3 hours home. The service manager informed me today that the issue now is with the transfer case and it’ll be a ~$2000 repair. He claims that this issue can’t possibly be related to the service they did on my transmission and that it’s basically an unfortunate coincidence that this issue occurred right after my transmission was replaced. I’m refusing to pay them anything else and have escalated this situation to the GM - I’ve also requested they ship the car to me and pick up this rental to avoid another 6 hour round trip.
Is this guy trying to cover for his service tech fucking up? Could this really be an unfortunate coincidence or was the transfer case issue likely caused by an improper transmission install? What are my options if the GM won’t cover the cost of this additional repair? Am I being unreasonable here?

2023.05.25 17:41 ES6_2020 Load Carrying Shocks or Air Shocks?

*** Updated! Went with the Gabriel 43048 Load Carriers! Photos in comments ***
Hi all!
I have a 2000 Nissan Xterra SE RWD V6, bone stock with the factory tow package and OE equivalent shocks (2 years old). I’m planning a multi state (1200 mile) move soon where I will be towing my enclosed trailer with a few pieces of furniture and some boxes (probably 2200 lbs w/trailer).
My long term plans for the rig are Timbrens, a moderate lift, etc, however cost is my main enemy at the moment. With that, I’ve been digging around some shock kits and got to thinking about the Gabriel Load Carriers. I had a set on a Chevy pickup years ago and loved them for what they did.
Best I’ve come up with is these which have the correct mount eyelet sizes:
Gabriel 43048 Rear Load Carrier
Those fit the 2000 Frontier RWD, so in theory would work, however I’m a little concerned about a loss of about 1” of stroke on the shock and 2” fully extended based on the dimensions listed compared to the OE shocks. Will these work for what I’m intending to do? Should I instead go for the air shocks and keep my OE equivalents to swap back in later?
I don’t do much off-road and if I’m being absolutely candid I drive it like a grandma until I can save enough cash to upgrade the rig.
