2023.06.01 19:46 DenjaX First time travelling to Japan fumbles/bloopers trip report
I wish I found this subreddit sooner so I could expand my research prior visiting Japan. I only found this subreddit after I returned from the trip so after reflecting upon the trip I will write my mistakes that I made and things that I have learned so I can perhaps help other first time travellers going to Japan. It will be also useful for me in the future. PS: forgive my grammar, English is not my first language. Also a late report + numerous trip fumbles ahead so please be kind xDD
Me (30M) and my gf (25F) went on a trip to Japan April 24 - May 11, 2023. This was our first time travelling to Japan and our first time travelling in a different country by ourselves in general. We both had no experience travelling without family/experienced travellers with us so it was a bit stressful but we still had fun in general.
What we learned: - Get a very good shoes for extensive walking/hiking. I cannot stress this enough. Man, I returned with bunch of callouses on my toes+heels and blisters on my pinky toes that turned into some sort of stage 2 pressure sore. It was not fun walking with pain that I feel bad for unable to keep up with my gf. I had to sit many times to give first aid and end up buying some products for my feet. Was still able to complete all itineraries but it could have been prevented. No more Sketchers for me.
- 1 month prior to flight, my vegetarian gf attempted to become omnivore for the trip. She was sick for a couple of weeks for eating meat but she braved through it because she did not want to miss out on food while in Japan. She adapted in the end although she had nauseous from eating meat at times. In the end, there were actually numerous vegetarian options for her that she did not have to adapt in the first place.
- We needed more time to prepare for the trip. Our trip was kind of spontaneous and we booked the flight ticket around late March so we have to pay hefty amount of money more. The itinerary was too much than we could have accounted for. We should have given ourselves free time in between destinations and not clump them like there is no tomorrow.
- Check the weather forecast. Preparing for the itinerary while considering the weather can be very difficult as the weather in Japan fluctuates very easily. Good thing we group our itineraries that can be done indoors vs outdoors so would switch up the plan depending on the weather. I also did not know cherry blossom forecast was a thing. I visited places expecting some cherry blossoms and they turned out to be green when we get there. This is a good thing to consider while visiting during spring season.
- Be flexible for the trip. Our trip was supposed to be Osaka -> Kyoto -> Nagoya -> Kawaguchiko -> Tokyo. Then we switched up Tokyo and Kawaguchiko due to price increasing during the Golden Week. We visited within the Golden week period (we did not know this event was a thing) and we realized the price of hotels skyrocket within this period. I wanted to experience some high end ryokans in Kawaguchiko with a view of Mount Fuji but then the price was like 3-4 times the price during the Golden week, hence, we switched up the places. We saved money for lodging because of that.
- Popular restaurants + Tourist trap places can have long lines. If you have tighter schedule like we did, I highly suggest making reservations or come earlier to get into the lines. Even a lot of restaurants that open at 11am, I saw a line already around 9:30am. I did not have time for that that we end up visiting not so pupular places and yet still experience delicious food. Tourist trap places tend to be overrated and expensive. It is a good thing that we went to try other places. Our restaurant policy if there are more locals eating vs tourists eating, it is good and most likely cheap. Some restaurants also do not appear on google maps due to not adapting to the English language so you can usually find hidden gems here and there.
- I think it is better to check in a hotel with breakfast services as most restaurants open around 11am. We had hotel with breakfast service and some have dont. We end up buying food at combini and also got lucky with Denny's near our first hotel as it opens at 6am.
- Note for type of train traveling within your station. I only realized this during the middle of our trip. There is Local, Rapid, Express. Local stops station to station, rapid seemed to skip some stations, and express seemed to only stop at key stations. It is good that the stations have English translations and even the train pre recorded voice also had English parts.
- Check exchange rate before withdrawing money from ATMs. The currency exchange fluctuates but it is not a huge difference. It is still good to win as much money in the exchange to have more cash in hand. The money I lost due to the exchange were minuscule at first but they accumulate since I did not check exchange rate until I returned.
- I should not have been afraid to ask for help. I had this impression that Japanese people don't like to be bothered and they seemed resourceful themselves to not bother themselves asking. At least I learned this the second day of the trip. Hotel receptionists are good resource to ask.
What saved us the trip: - Being an anime fan/hololive fan helped me with the language. I watched so many animes that it surprisingly helped improve my vocabulary and I was able to understand people speaking in Japanese. Although I cannot read their language(thank god google image translate), I was able to hold conversation even though I speak like a toddlekindergartener. It is almost funny that some anime characters speak unnatural that I even used their kind of speech at times. I am ever so proud when some people told me "Nihonggo Jouzu"-d 4 times during this trip. Some people take that as an offense but I was so delighted when I received that.
- Booking online for reservation. We avoided spending more for this trip since we did not go to theme parks and focused on temple visiting as we preferred. We only had few reservations to do without much competition. * Renting wifi device. I was about to use roaming but it was too expensive for a 17 day trip. Thank goodness for renting. Things would have been a disaster without my internet. Everyone should get their internet access as their priority.
- Get a power bank device. Since I use my phone all the time, the device dies easily. There are charging stations around but if you want to keep moving, bring your own and charge them while you walk. I had my 20000mah power bank and it is more than enough for charging 2 phones, 1 tablet, 1 wifi device for the day. I just charge the power bank while I sleep.
- Getting a Suica pass. This is self explanatory. I almost got into the hype of getting a JR pass too but I thought it was too expensive for me. I did not need a JR pass. With the help of google maps and Suica pass, I was able to go to my destination. I am amazed they put the price of the transport that I was able to choose which method of transport should I be getting. No taxis for me in this trip since I heard they tend to be expensive.
- Buying unlimited day pass also saved us some money for transport during the trip. It is a good practise to calculate your itinerary beforehand before deciding whether an unlimited day pass is a good option. There were days we did not buy unlimited pass * Putting Akihabara near end of trip than early. I would have ran out of money to spend for other places if I went there first.
Brief trip report: - Day 0 (April 25) - Arrive to Osaka after Layover from Narita around 8pm. Checked in the hotel and ate combini food before turning in for the night.
- Day 1 - Osaka Castle (entered with an entrance fee) -> Izakaya Toyo (watched the episode on netflix and decided to visit) -> Sumiyoshi Taisha -> Nagai Park (it was at this part I realized about the Golden Week as we saw construction of stalls as preparation) -> Team Labs Botanical. The botanical experience was underwhelming for me. I was only impressed with the blue lights on the foliage.
- Day 2 - Yoshino. This is the part where I wished I knew about the Cherry blossom forecast. I checked google to see where in Japan has best place for cherry blossom and it recommended Yoshino. The cherry blossom was already over but the place was still very nice and visited some temples there. I will definitely come back for the actual cherry blossom viewing. At least the Blue Symphony train was a cool method of transport to Yoshino. Then spent the rest of the day/evening at Tsutenkaku.
- Day 3 - Shittenoji Temple (they were building stalls for the festival? got few good pictures due to stalls within sights) -> went to Kobe and tried their Kobe beef from a golden cow plate restaurant in Kobe -> cable car to Nunobike Herb Garden -> hang around BE KOBE sign -> Dotonbori for the rest of the evening (VERY CROWDED).
- Day 4 - Nara. Rented bike there and went to various places. Nara Deer Park -> Sage Ike pond -> Kasuga Taisha shrine. Feeding deers everywhere. -> Todaiji temple (entrance fee) -> Kofukuji temple -> Higashimuku Shopping Street -> returned bike then train back to Osaka-> going first time trying bath house in Solaniwa.
- Day 5 - Checked out hotel. Used Kyo Train Garaku to Kyoto. Used a coinlocker since check in starts at 3pm. -> Jonangu Shrine (entrance fee for garden) -> Fushimi Inari Taisha. Attempted to climb up but my poor feet were screaming. We turned back after reaching the second station before Mount Inari. -> Gion for the evening before checking in to the hotel.
- Day 6 - Arashiyama Bamboo Forest (I was underwhelmed by this place as it was small. Make sure to come early as it gets crowded later on) -> Nearby Temples (Nonomiya, Mikami, Jojakkoji, Nisonin) -> Tenryuji Temple (entrance fee but most impressive garden I have visited this trip) -> Tenryuji Shigetsu to experience their vegan cuisine -> Sagano Romantic Train to Kameoka -> train back to shop around Arashiyama -> Kinkakuji Temple -> Nishiki Market for the rest of evening
- Day 7 - Kiyomizu-dera (entrance fee) -> Sannenzaka (they have Starbucks in tatami there, also my gf visited "My Only Fragrance" shop and made her own perfume there). -> Yasaka Shrine (there were numerous food stalls everywhere I think this is how they celebrate Golden Week and I ate good) -> Heian Temple (entrance to garden). They also had numerous food stalls and a concert stage and I ate good -> Kodaiji Temple (entrance fee but they had a nice light show there during the evening)
- Day 8 - Nijo Castle (Expensive entrance fee compared to other entrances. Imo, there are other better places that should be more worth the fee compared to this place). -> Kyoto Imperial Palace (free entrance) -> Rokusonno Shrine -> Higashi Honganji Temple (free entrance. More stall constructions) -> Gion for the rest of evening.
- Day 9 - Check out Hotel. Used Hinotori express train to Nagoya. Always wanted to try capsule hotel and checked in to 9 hours hotel. -> Visited Nagoya Castle (entrance fee but I was disappointed we could not enter the castle itself compared to Osaka Castle). There were also numerous food stalls inside and I ate good. -> Visited their Malls -> Slept at the capsule hotel. To be honest, I slept really well compared to other hotels we have booked. It was surprisingly comfortable despite the random fire alarm that woke me up during that night.
- Day 10 - Checked out Hotel. Used Shinkansen to Tokyo. Checked in at the next hotel. -> Teamlab Planets (way better than Teamlab Botanicals) -> Dinner at Gonpachi (Kill Bill reference). The movie was old and it is the theme of the restaurant. Their food was mid though. It is just a nice ambiance where noise seemed to be welcome here.
- Day 11 - Suga Jinja (Your Name reference). Still surprised there are still visitors there due to that movie. Did some cringe Your Name photos. -> Meiji Jingu -> Explored Harajuku (visited Aoyama flower market tea house) -> Shibuya Crossing (ate good food there). Visited Tower Records + Don Quijote + Miyashita Park. Wanted to do Shibuya Sky but they sold out their tickets. End up getting lost among the crowds for the rest of evening.
- Day 12 - Nezu Shrine -> Sensoji Temple (It was raining too hard that day so we decided to come back another time. -> Shopping at Asakusa ROX + tried their conveyor belt sushi -> Akihabara (spent quite a lot of money here for anime merch). Anime store hopping + visited maid cafe for the first time.
- Day 13 - Sensoji Temple (better weather) -> Ate at Happy Pancake (I find it overrated but I still enjoyed their pancakes) -> Visited a big Muji store in Ginza -> Akihabara part 2 (more anime merch)
- Day 14 - Check out hotel. Left all check in baggages in a coin locker for 3 days prior heading to Kawaguchiko. Used bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko station. Took shuttle bus to hotel. Check in at ryokan with a bath house + footbath on their rooftop with nice view of Mt. Fuji. Walked around the lake + view of Mount Fuji. Found myself a waifu Kawaguchiko-san seemed to be the mascot of the town since I see the character on various tourist spots. Had myself a mini scavenger hunt to find all of her cut outs around the town and I found them all!
- Day 15 - Shopping for souvenirs around. -> Took the boat going around the lake with nice view. Took car cable up to have a better view of Mount Fuji. Walked up more higher to have better vantage point. Proposed to my GF, now I have a fiancée.
- Day 16 - Check out Hotel. Bus back to Shinjuku. One more stop at Akihabara for merch. Retrieved coin locker baggages. Train to Narita Airport then flight back to Canada.

2023.06.01 19:42 Perfect_Situation254 Any residents with families willing to be interviewed on camera next week for a story on Cambridge, MA?
Hello!
I know this is a bit of an atypical post, but I'm a video journalist with Fortune magazine, and we're looking for potential interview subjects to film next week for a short video story we're producing around why Cambridge, MA is a great place to live for families -- taking into consideration factors like walkability, access to educational and health resources, sense of community, resources for senior citizens, et cetera.
We'd essentially just want to film you for about 1-2 hours (interview + some B-roll), which could be filmed at your home (or right outside, weather pending) for your convenience. The interview questions would be very simple and straightforward -- we'd essentially just ask you why you like living in Cambridge, MA, and why you think it's a good place for families to live. We'd ideally like to film next Monday, June 5 or Tuesday, June 6, but there's some flexibility there.
If there's anyone out there who'd be open to being filmed (or knows someone who would), please shoot me a DM! Thanks so much in advance!

2023.06.01 19:27 dreamingofislay Feis Ile 2023 Day Six Recap - Kilchoman Day (6/1)
| It's hard to believe we're on the back half of Feis week already. We lucked into another beautiful, sunny day, making this one of the best weather weeks that Islay's had for the festival in a long time. https://preview.redd.it/8nk5pjh9xf3b1.jpg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa7c482a6e1ca66933f4359514b337209154d710 Lots to share: - Kilchoman was mobbed. Not sure why, but the crowds were much bigger today than on previous open days. It was a very lively atmosphere, and the distillery put on one of the best open days of the week. The free swag kit included the common mini-glencairn and lanyard, along with three dram tokens, good for pours of Machir Bay, Sanaig, and 100% Islay 12th edition.
- The distillery offered a lot to see and do. Two fun festival games for 5 pounds a try: (1) quoits, i.e., tossing rope rings onto the necks of Kilchoman bottles for a pour; and (2) cornhole with prizes (a 4/4 would win the Feis Ile bottle). I tried my hand at quoits and failed miserably, but the consolation prize was a pour of Machir Bay, so there were no losers. Multiple food stations including the well-regarded Kilchoman Cafe and a larger BBQ stand outside. The gift shop was packed with people buying a lot of Kilchoman bottles. And the music came from the Rolling Drones, a band that featured the rare female bagpiper. Throughout the day, the Islay Pipe Band would play the bagpipes as well.
- Kilchoman kept producing on Feis day, and we loved that they let everyone into the stillhouse to see things in process. Employees were on hand to chat and answer questions. Visitors could also get into one of the warehouses or visit the malting floor. Overall, Kilchoman felt more open than other distilleries and more interested in showing guests how their whisky gets made, no tour booking needed.
- Like Bowmore, Kilchoman kept some tours bookable on the day-of, including core range tastings on the hour and farm tours. Great mix between the online pre-booking system, which could be very competitive, and day-of availability.
- Big changes are coming at Kilchoman, as they are on the rest of the island, although everything is aimed at maintaining their light and floral house style. Since Port Ellen is cutting off everyone's maltings, Kilchoman has applied to create its own commercial malting operation. It's also building new warehouses that will be racked instead of dunnage. And their cask supplier is switching from Buffalo Trace to Breckenridge due to BT cutting off their supply. Amidst all that, the distillery is doubling production again with new stills and washbacks. And, as if all that isn't enough, the youngest Wills brother, Peter, is going to head up a new rum distillery in Barbados, under the parent company but with its own, as-yet-unannounced name. Yes, you read that right. Kilchoman (or the family that owns it) will be making sugarcane rum in the Caribbean.
- We did a Past, Present, and Future tasting with George Wills, one of the founding couple's three sons, and one of the distillery's star brand managers. The experience helped us appreciate how Kilchoman has changed from its earlier years until now, while showcasing the common DNA in their whisky. As a sneak peak of the "future," we got to try two upcoming drams, and George also announced they'll be releasing a 5,000-bottle run of a 15- or 16-year-old Kilchoman soon worldwide. Overall, the Kilchoman events were reasonably priced compared to other distilleries, and most of the major sessions were headed up by one of the Wills, which really does confirm it's a family business.
- We met a guy who works at The Lakes Distillery, a Kilchoman-like distillery in England's Lakes District that just won World Whiskies Single Malt of the Year award. Very cool, and excited for their whiskies to make it across the pond to us!
I must have doubled my memory archive of Kilchomans today, which is wonderful: Kilchoman 100% Islay, 12th edition - This welcome dram was only peated to around 20-25 ppm but could have fooled me. It had that high, clear, bright, and fruity note common to most Kilchomans, but this one complemented it with a generous dollop of smoke. Kilchoman Machir Bay - Had a bottle of this at home back in 2018, but haven't had it now in five years or so. It was more medicinal than I remembered and a great reference point for the brand. Floral, a little fruity, but with an ashy peat in all three stages. Machir Bay has stayed a young whisky, even as Kilchoman's stock has aged up, but it doesn't taste young. Kilchoman Feis Ile 2023 - This mashup combines two bourbon casks and an oloroso sherry butt. In flavor, it fell somewhere in between Highland Park Cask Strength (Batch 1) and Highland Park 18. Mandarin orange, wisps of smoke, loads of nutiness, and then a buildup of drying spice late in the mouth and during the finish. Very nice whisky. Kilchoman 100% Islay, 3rd edition - The first of two "past" drams from the Past, Present, and Future tasting. This very young Kilchoman was a decent lightly peated whisky on the palate and finish, but the nose smelled like birthday cake after about 30 minutes. Kilchoman Spring 2011 release - The second "past" dram was much drier and woodier, despite a similar 3-4-year age range, compared to the previous one. In this ex-bourbon release, the core notes that would become Machir Bay are already apparent. Sourdough bread, lemon peel and peat smoke, and a hint of latex gloves. Kilchoman Fino Cask Matured 2023 - The "present" marked a big step up into some complex drams. This one had a salt-and-stone maritime peat aroma, but it was surprisingly plush and creamy in the mouth. The finish was bright and medicinal and suffused up into my nose, a vastly better finish than the first two. Just 5 years old, so not much older, but a great pick. Kilchoman Comraich Batch 6 - This special edition only goes out to the distillery's special partner bars, places like Delilah's in Chicago or Jack Rose in DC. My favorite of the day, it was made up of 2012 ex-bourbon casks that got a finish in Calvados. Smelled like the lemon drizzle cake we ate an hour earlier at the cafe, with nice citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Kilchoman 100% Islay, 13th edition - For our glimpse into the future, they pulled out the cask-strength version, around 56%, of the upcoming 13th edition of 100% Islay. This'll be proofed down to 50% in the commercial release, and George said it's better at the lower ABV. The nose combined the vanilla and oak more characteristic of bourbon, and after that it was plum and barley galore. Another winner. PX Cask Matured 2023 - Another release coming out in the next six months or so. One thing I'm starting to learn from this trip is that I don't like Islay whiskies matured or finished in PX as much as I thought I did. This one had that damp, warehouse funk I'm starting to associate with PX, followed by a lot of sherry sweetness balanced out by wood and petrol. Earlier recaps here: Day One, Lagavulin Day Two, Bruichladdich - but we skipped and did Bunnahabhain Day Three, Caol Ila Day Four, Laphroaig Day Five, Bowmore and Ardnahoe Bonus notes from Days One through Five Slainte! submitted by dreamingofislay to Scotch [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 19:25 WorldlyPhilosopher Chicago Munchies: Hours?
I’ve gone half a dozen times now during the hours listed on Door Dash and Google Maps. They’ve always been closed. There are no hours posted on the door either. Does anybody know when they operate?
For that matter: does anybody know when Bone Yard Cafe is opening for the season? Still closed and nothing on their FB page.

2023.06.01 19:18 Petri-Dishmeow First timer- help! :)
| Soo this is my first time attempting to grow anything. I have done a decent amount of research, but I decided to kind just wing it this first attempt. The location is not my favorite, but I wasn't given much of a choice. It's sandy, sandy soil, even after I mixed in MiracleGro All-Purpose In-ground soil, as the bag directed. 3 inches of miraclegro into the top 6 inches of bed soil- perhaps I should've done more with all this sand. It's on the West facing side of the house, does not get a good amount of sun, around 4 hours maybe a lil more or less. I'm in zone 10b Southeast Florida. Hot weather and it is the beginning of hurricane season, it's been raining quite a bit the babies have been drowning. I wanted to start a little butterfly garden I scattered a pollinators mix (in the corner w the most activity), some marigolds, Amaranthus caudatus in the back (like 2 weeks ago the rest are around 3-4w), Chinese forget me nots, purple coneflower, alyssum. On the other side, I did some veggies, zucchini, carrots, bunching onions, and pickle bushes. I do not have much faith in everyone's success although I am praying for it lol. But I did plant some things too early or late for their seasons- I am expecting mostly failure on this round. I still have half of seeds from each packet & I've already bought like ten different other floweveggie seeds teehee. But please give me any advice you can think of! Do I need to fill the bed completely so it doesn't flood? Will that even work since there are no gutters? All the rain slides down and builds a deadly trench that some of the cucumbers are *maybe* struggling to survive in right now heh. Anytime it rains all the debris/mulch stuff concentrates together. I am going to buy a raised bed eventually for plants that need more sun, and I'm going to begin starting seeds indoors shortly and I'm not against pots. But I still would like for this bed to get some action. I am also not against composting but I don't really want to start getting into that yet. after rain/lil flood submitted by Petri-Dishmeow to garden [link] [comments] |
2023.06.01 19:16 WebSorry4316 [UPDATE] From the LA-Grinch/Optimist/Troll - TAKING DOWN OG POST IN 24HRS - Visited Seattle for a week, and discovered that it's my favorite city in the US.
(Sorry, I'm a huge rambler and like to connect with people. Responding to everything/everyone before I do my civil duty of taking down the OG Post. A most-likely, ya'll don't care much about what I have to say) I mean wow, who woulda thought this would've incited so much talk! I'll have to admit that I've been experiencing a lot of post-trip high/depression/LA-animosity, and that this list is just a spewing of cultural observations that I had made throughout my week in Seattle. So I really appreciate all of the genuine insight from
everyone: locals/transplants/people who had to leave/people who want to leave. As divisive as this post ended up being, your opinions are completely valid. Which is why my post might make you nostalgic or triggered. I’m just happy that I brought back some appreciation towards the Emerald City for those (who sounded like) needed it. I know that there are some (a lot) of things that are probably misguided:
- The main one is my critique of the homeless issue and crime. As horrible as the situation may be in other cities, it does not mean that I have the right to write off or just downplay something that is seriously impacting communities. Just because I didn’t see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. It seemed like a fluke in the system that I happened to not see anything go down. I’m just happy to see that city seems to at least try to remedy the scenario. As for crime, after further research, it is so true that Seattle experiences more crime than LA. Making it 46th on the list of Most Dangerous Cities in the US: https://www.populationu.com/gen/most-dangerous-cities-in-the-us.
- Another thing didn’t address is food. It was freaking awesome seeing so many little restaurants in each micro-neighborhood. The ingredients always seemed to be highly sourced with the service being spectacular. But honestly, for the price, LA actually might take the lead on this one. BUT, HUGE BUT OVER HERE, this is because I’ve found my “go-to” places for each cuisine accumulated over years of trial and error. In Seattle, the food was always solidly good but not mind-blowing. In LA, it’s either amazing or food poisoning. That being said, change my mind! Please send me your food reccs. I’m a huge Notion nerd and have a whole Seattle section in case anyone is interested in sharing info.
- The Seattle Freeze has been brought up numerous times. And I wholeheartedly believe that we came right when Spring sprung with people crawling out of hibernation lol. But I’ve also just accepted that this is just a city trait. And that I’ll be fully feeling the effects in winter. I might seem like a naive bushy tailed optimist, but I’m an extremely depressive emotional roller coaster of an artist that simply thrives off of genuine human connection. After being in LA for way too long (almost 7 years), I have a pretty good radar on bullshit. I’d rather be with weird, awkward, introverts playing D&D and having interesting conversations than in a room with “influencers”/“actors”/“models” *PUKE*.
- The weather does truly sound tough. However, I’m pretty confused about the darkness. I compared these two charts and it looks like Seattle sets one hour before LA does in December. Yet the sun rises an hour earlier so the day length in Seattle is actually longer than in LA. So does the sky actually stay dark in the daytime like how it is in Alaska? Or is it just overcast/clouds/rain- because LA winters are overcast/clouds.https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/los-angeles?month=12https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/seattle?month=12
- Finally, giving Seattle's "get stuff done" approach due to the lefty-political space was a big claim to make. I know I'm viewing things thru the lens of a millennial vacationer so I only saw what they wanted me to see. Most major US cities tend to be lefty, but no way does that mean it works out. LA is an utmost example of democratic clowns (and I myself am a demo!)
As someone who has moved every 4 years around the us (initially due to family, then on my own terms as an adult), I found that it's incredibly important to be aware of the beauty that the world has to offer. And if you're not happy with where you're at and how things are- then just bite the bullet and explore new territory. As stuck as things may seem, there are always things that can be adjusted. If, financially, moving is not an option at the moment- then embrace the fact that there is a mindset/spiritual shift that would most likely smooth out the situation in the meantime.
This is now my moment to apologize for all the shit-talk about LA. For anyone who’s interested in my background: I have an extreme bias because I've been really struggling with "the hustle" mentality. I work as a freelance graphic designer in the music industry, and it’s honestly been very soul-sucking being in a city this competitive and vain in my industry. And just like any city, it sucks to be low/middle class in a city that you can barely afford. My reality is that Seattle isn’t that much more affordable, but the mental health trade-off is all that matters to me at this point. The Seattle eclectic and smaller music scene so so darn cool. And most importantly, I absolutely cannot wait to breathe fresh air, participate in the outdoor recc and hobbies that I’ve been putting on the back burner all these years!!!!! As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized the importance of my connection with nature. I can already imagine a future where I become an ex-Seattlite and move to a small PNW coastal town. But oops! This was about apologizing about bagging on LA- it's a wonderful place if you love amenities, food, don't mind traffic and have $$$.
That being said, I know it’s a year out. But if anyone wants to connect in the future, feel free to DM. Won’t make any promises about responding right away because I suck at texting in general. But I’d love to link up once we move.Things I love: small/diy shows, anything arts and crafts, bouldering, cross country, soccer games, plant identification, kendama (beginner), board games, swimming, punk/psych/altrock/indie/weird/, gardening, hiking, camping, bike ridesThings I’m interested in and would love join groups/meetups for: carpentry, sewing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, mushroom foraging, oystering/clamming/fishing, new art workshops
Also, thanks for the bros and dudes, I’m a lady that takes pride in how “tough”/“chill” I’m perceived ;)

I am also not against composting but I don't really want to start getting into that yet. https://preview.redd.it/mpulk78yvf3b1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f97b2c5fec6c4203587bf8baf53bafc98a18546 submitted by Petri-Dishmeow to floridagardening [link] [comments] |

| Soo this is my first time attempting to grow anything. I have done a pretty decent amount of research, but I decided to kind just wing it this first attempt. It's on the West facing side of the house, does not get a good amount of sun (the roof covers it when the sun in just coming into the middle of the sky & there's a tree/bush that also blocks even when the sun is shining on it), around 4 hours maybe a lil more or less. 2023.06.01 19:04 bluedeers Pre-Flight nerves kicking in
I’m flying ABQ-ORD (Chicago) and then ORD-LHR, my first flight is in about 2.5 hours. My stomach feels like it’s in knots and I’m worried I’m gonna have an anxiety attack on the plane. I really don’t like the small planes you fly in from state-state, they feel so claustrophobic and there’s so many people on them.
If anyone would like to track me, my flights are AA1328 and AA46.
Any advice or kind words welcome 🫶

2023.06.01 18:58 MaxSteelMetal How much longer can I drive my car with an EVAP error code (P0466 ) , before it causes major problems?
Hi everyone,
So I bought a Bluetooth scanner recently and it spit out the code related to the engine light. Here's the code.
Raw code: 0446 ECU: 10 Status: Confirmed Evaporative emission (EVAP) system, vent control - circuit malfunction Evaporative Control Vent Control Malfunction
So it has something to do with the EVAP system. I was just wondering if taking this car (97 camry) on a 2 hour drive up east would cause any issues with the engine or fuel system? I have been driving it for past 2 weeks after the light came on and it hasn't been a problem thus far.
I don't think it's a major job. I could probably get the solenoid and some tools and fix it myself. But the weather has been horrible here recently and I don't have a garage unfortunately.

2023.06.01 18:48 TwistStatus3190 S&D just totally glitched out and shit the bed. I've never been happier.
So there I was in the Walmart parking lot, with barbeque sauce on my titties. When I get this shop and deliver with an undisclosed amount as per the mods preference.
It's got thirty-five items. I pick five of them and for some reason it catalyzes me to checkout instamatically. Weird I thought, but I did as told like a good little spark delivery boy and RIGHT after I click I've left the store it cancels on me when I'm about to load my car. nothing about a return or anything. I checked and I was paid dutifully so I had little to complain about.
From here I saw an old couple and knowing I had perishables and I'd be here all day in 80 degree weather I asked if they'd like it and they took it happily. Even tipping me! Then I immediately received my round robin for the exact same hour and while I can't give numbers let's just say it was quite the first hour!

2023.06.01 18:46 Pa28-181 recommended battery shut down level/reserve
I had a new system installed and the PTO certificate finally was sorted out. I will shortly be switching to a solar buy back plan (although sorting through the options in Texas is a bit daunting). However in the meantime what are some recommended settings for the battery shut down level and the reserve levels if I stay in the self consumption mode. Weather guard is turned on and the battery system is a 10Q with everything backed up except my AC, dryer and oven. I am in Dallas and other than the great freeze power outage, I normally get about 3-4 outages a year but they normally last about an hour or so depending on how many are in the area and the speed of repair by Oncor.
Suggestions on values?
Also, any thing to look out for on the solar buy back plans.

2023.06.01 17:59 CrownTownLibrarian Exceptionally bad Amex Travel experience
Hi all,
Just looking for some advice regarding this situation:
Wife and I bought tickets to Texas through Amex travel portal for Christmas last October. Unfortunately, the weather that caught up with lots of areas caught up with us in that our outgoing trip on Delta was cancelled. That meant we wouldn’t be in Texas for the Amex portal booked trip. We bought the gold travel protector, just for an instance such as this, because one way travel isn’t covered by Amex insurance.
Fast forward to April when we use that credit on a one way trip back home from NYC. Unfortunately, the last day we were in the city I had got news that my mother had a significant stroke. We had to make a life and death decision with regards to her care and the doctors said I should get home as quick as possible. We changed our flights to earlier in the day out of JFK but unfortunately, the flight we changed to was cancelled and the flight we were placed on as a replacement flight was delayed five hours to midnight. We would’ve been stuck for at least 24 hours in Charlotte. Subsequently, we bought delta tix out of LGA to get us home as quick as possible.
With that being said, our original trip from NYC was slightly more than our credit from Texas. We were also charged, itemized in the receipt, for another gold travel protector. I asked the agent at the time if that meant it was in effect for this trip and they say yes.
When I went to file my claim, they told me they could not find a policy number. I said I was charged for the gold travel protector again so there has to be one. Alas, there wasn’t. Amex charged me for an insurance product where it seems like they didn’t finish the leg work.
I feel like Amex has taken us for a ride and I am very disappointed. Have any of you faced anything similar? We’re at a loss right now for next steps.

2023.06.01 17:30 Nidoras Pacific War III, 1943-March 1944 Peacock-Shah Alternate Elections
| General Omar Bradley "JAPS LEAVE SOLOMON ISLANDS AS NIMITZ DECLARES VICTORY IN BISMARCK SEA," Philip Warden, The Chicago Tribune, March 4, 1943, GUADALCANAL-Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was reported dead this morning at the hands of a successful American Naval air raid near the end of the Solomon Islands campaign. General Omar Bradley declared yesterday that Japanese forces had wholly cleared the area, with Secretary of State Stimson declaring the offensive to be a success despite months of brutal fighting, mere hours after Bradley's declaration, with General Douglas MacArthur by his side. Admirals Spruance and Hart are reported to be in pursuit of the temporarily leaderless Japanese fleet through the South Pacific, rushing for the remaining strongholds of the Rising Sun. Meanwhile, amidst swirling allegations of a growing rift between himself and President Luce stemming from political differences and a refusal to promote the famed Raider beyond Brigadier General, Evans Fordyce Carlson had been removed from the occupation council on Guadalcanal. "LEMAY STRIKES FOR URAJIOSUTOKU," Jack Smith, The Los Angeles Times, June 29, 1943 URAJIOSUTOKU, WHITE RUSSIA-Russian collaborationist leader Grigory Semyonov is reported to be in hiding in the aftermath of the largest American bombing raid on White Russia since the beginning of the war, striking the port of Urajiosutoku, referred to as Vladivostok by native Russians. Semyonov has accused Bolshevik Russia of aiding and abetting the United States Air Force in bombing raids upon the Japanese-controlled Russian Far East and industrial centers through Manchuria, thereby violating its neutrality, allegations cited by the Imperial Japanese Navy in their complete embargo of Soviet ships in Japanese waters, though they have been denied by newly promoted Major General Curtis LeMay. Former President William Randolph Hearst "HEARST BRANDED HEROIC ON TARAWA," Charles Lederer, The Atlanta Georgian, November 15, 1943 TARAWA, SOUTH PACIFIC-Mere weeks after General Bradley set foot on Tarawa, former President William R. Hearst visited troops on the front lines alongside actress Marion Davies at the invitation of his son, Captain Randolph A. Hearst. A group of soldiers, sailors, and airmen, including Private Frank Lautenberg, pictured above with President Hearst, held a gathering in honor of Mr. Hearst. Many airmen, soldiers, and sailors have joined their fellow Americans in the recent boom for Hearst for President. In New York, over a thousand war widows may have gathered in Madison Square Garden to promote Hearst as "heroic" for his visit to Tarawa so soon after the conclusion of active fighting. "HART REACHES MIDWAY, FENG SURROUNDS JAPANESE AT HSIAN" Paul Bewsher, The Daily Mail, January 3, 1944 MIDWAY ISLAND, CENTRAL PACIFIC- Over two years beyond the American attack on Pearl Harbor, conflict is reported to have begun between American and Japanese fleets East of the island of Midway, the first significant battleship engagements in the region despite years of aerial and submarine warfare. This development is credited with the recent promotion of Admiral Thomas C. Hart to full command of American actions in the North Pacific Theater and the concomitant sidelining of Generals MacArthur and Patton, reportedly at the request of their superior, General Omar Bradley. Across the ocean, limited news from the Chinese theater suggests that the Japanese Tenth Army remains surrounded by Chinese revolutionary leader Feng Yuxiang at the city of Hsian, with Japanese reinforcements redirected to respond to a renewed wave of island hopping in the South Pacific ordered by President Luce. However, domestic criticis such as former Speaker of the House of Representatives Charles Coughlin and former Senate Majority Leader Robert M. La Follette, both seen as contenders for the nomination of the opposition Farmer-Labor Party for the presidency in 1944, have accused Luce of unnecessarily sacrificing American lives in an attempt to preserve Feng's advance through Japanese occupied China. More moderate critics such as newspaper editor William Randolph Hearst, who held the presidency himself as a Farmer-Laborite between 1905 and 1909, have accused Luce of working too closely with the Chinese rebellion's right wing, led by Chiang Kai-Shek, whose wife has been accused of having an affair with American envoy Wendell Willkie. Hearst himself has been accused of harboring presidential ambitions despite recently celebrating his 80th birthday. 2023.06.01 17:29 herequeerandgreat it's better to go to the zoo during cooler seasons then warmer seasons.
going to the zoo is a popular summer time activity. the weather tends to be really nice during the summer time so most families like to go to the zoo during this time. however, in my experience, it has always been best to wait for the cooler times.
for starters, since going to the zoo is such a popular summer time activity, that also means that it's super crowded. the last time me and my family went to the zoo during summer, it was damn near impossible to find parking. plus, summer is notoriously hot. being in the hot sun for three to four hours really isn't all that appealing, especially since i live in an area that gets really hot during the summer.
in my opinion, it is better to go during fall and winter. for the past three years, all of my zoo visits have been during fall and winter. not only is it not as crowded but the weather isn't as unbearable as it would be had i gone in the summer.
